Es hat sich gelohnt, bei bestem Wetter mal relativ früh unterwegs zu sein – wenn der Weihnachtsmarkt noch geschlossen ist und man sich mal darauf konzentrieren kann, was auf den Dächern eigentlich so alles los ist. Erstaunliches!

Last week I made it to the Christmas market early enough to walk it while it was still closed so I was able to concentrate on what was going on on the rooftops. Amazing!

Der Weihnachtsmann war viel vertreten – was macht er wohl hier? Ein Päuschen mit einem guten Buch? Oder doch eher Lektüre des Auftragsbuchs? Oder gar die Liste mit den Kindern, die nicht brav waren?

Of course, Santa was a frequent motive – what do you think he’s doing here? Having a little break with a good book? Or checking the order book, more like? Or even the list with the children who weren’t good?

Meine Kollegin Mary hatte eine ganz tolle Idee. Sie ist eine Superköchin (wovon wir uns zu so manchem Anlass schon überzeugen konnten) und verkauft darüber hinaus eine hausgemachte Gewürzsauce nach ghanaischem Familienrezept. Und die Idee ist die: für alle Gläser, die im Monat Dezember mit Verweis auf diesen Eintrag verkauft werden, spendet sie 50 Cent für meine Hospizaktion.

My colleague Mary had an excellent idea. She whips up the most delicious meals which we have been able to try on a number of occasions already – and she sells her very own Hot Sauce, made according to an old Ghanaian family recipe. And this is her idea: for every jar sold during the month of December for which the buyer refers to this blog post, she will donate 50 (Euro) cents for my hospice fundraiser.

Wenn man auf dem Weihnachtsmarkt noch vor 12 Uhr schon eine solche Schlange sieht, dann hat man den besten Reibekuchenstand weit und breit entdeckt. Alle Jahre wieder ist es eine Freude zu sehen, dass einem dieser Genuss wieder vergönnt sein wird. Die alles entscheidende Frage ist: mit oder ohne?

If you walk the Christmas market and come across a queue like this before it’s even noon, you have found the best place to have potato patties. Every year it’s a joy to see that they are back and that special treat is still around. The decisive question: with or without?

An diesem Stand gibt es Reibekuchen – mit oder ohne Apfelmus, größere Entscheidungen wie bspw. bei der Bestellung eines Kaffees bleiben einem erspart. Mit schöner Regelmäßigkeit ruft der Herr der Bratwürste „BRATWURST?!“ in die Schlange der Wartenden, aber nur sehr, sehr selten meldet sich dann jemand. Hier ist vegetarisch angesagt. Womöglich vegan. Aber fettig.

This is the place for potato patties – with or without apple sauce, no major decisions necessary, as is so often the case with a coffee for example. The „Lord of Bratwurst“ shouts „SAUSAGE ANYBODY?!“ down the line at regular intervals but is usually rewarded only with a chuckle or two. This is the time and place to go vegetarian. Possibly vegan even? But greasy.

Der Zirkus ist in der Stadt – und das schon seit vier Wochen oder so… ich war ein bisschen schockiert, als ich die liebgewonnene Schaufensterdeko so früh gesehen habe. Aber es funktioniert wie Jahr und Tag: jung und alt stehend staunend, zeigend, lächelnd vor dieser Installation und verweilen. Und wenn sie irgendwann doch gehen, lächeln sie die Welt an.

The circus is in town – and has been for about four weeks or so… I was a little shocked when I saw the beloved installation in the shop window so early. But it works as it always has: young and old are drawn to it, marvelling, pointing, smiling – and stay. And when they finally do turn to leave, they smile at the world.

Und dieses Mal ist sogar ein Lemur dabei, ein Katta… oder ist der vielleicht immer schon dabei gewesen und fällt mir erst jetzt auf, wo ich die Tiere mal „in echt“ gesehen habe? Der Clown im Wagen des Schneiders ist einfach nur zum knuddeln, oder?

And this time it even features a lemur, a katta… or maybe that has been around all those years and I notice it only now after I’ve seen the animals in the wild this spring? I think the clown in the tailor’s trailer (say that three times really quick!) is just adorable!

Als eine Kollegin im Oktober zu einem Urlaub in St. Petersburg aufbrach, war der Auftrag klar: bring mir ein handgeschnitztes Väterchen Frost mit! Ich hatte die schonmal in Budapest gesehen, aber sie waren unbezahlbar. Aber bei einem „Direktimport“? Darf ich also vorstellen:

When a colleague went on a trip to St. Petersburg in October I asked her to bring one of the hand-made wooden Jack Frosts that I had seen in Budapest but which were unaffordable there. So my hopes were on this direct importing scheme! May I introduce:

Väterchen Frost! Er ist einfach wunderschön und ich gebe es zu: ich habe ihn im Oktober gleich gar nicht mehr in Papier gewickelt und in eine Kiste gepackt… er blieb direkt stehen. Die Rechnung ging auf: der Rubel im freien Fall machte es möglich. Er ist ein echter Schatz, auch wenn diese Serie eher ein Hauch von Fahndungsfoto hat:

Jack Frost! He is just beautiful and I admit: I did not wrap him in paper again and put him in a box back in October… he stayed with me! And it was a good idea: the ruble in a downward spiral made things possible. He’s so precious – even though this looks like a series of mug shots, come to think of it:

Ich wünsche euch ein schönes zweites Adventswochenende und erinnere daran: der Fundraiser für das Elisabeth-Hospiz läuft weiter! Ich würde mir ja vornehmen, das Ergebnis vom Vorjahr zu toppen, aber das war ja derart galaktisch…

I wish you all a wonderful second weekend in advent and would like to remind you: the fundraiser for the Elisabeth Hospice is still ongoing! I was thinking of trying to top last year’s result but that was so very high…

Am Freitag war es wieder soweit: Zeit, den Baum zu besorgen! Und was für ein perfekter Tag dafür! Knackig kalt und sogar mit ein bisschen Schnee! Wie immer waren der Baum und ich uns schnell einig, der Preis war gut und die Lieferung erfolgte am gleichen Abend.

Last Friday was the day I had been waiting for: time to buy the tree! And what a perfect day it was! Freezing cold and even with a little bit of snow! And as usual the tree and I found each other quickly, the price was good and it was delivered that evening.

Kurzfristig vorher entschied ich mich noch, das Wohnzimmer umzuräumen – ich wollte nicht wieder so unkommunikativ die Tür zum Flur verstellen müssen. Wahrscheinlich bin ich wieder nur wenige Hormonschübe von einer Komplettrenovierung entfernt. Noch schiebe ich das allerdings weit von mir.

At really short notice I decided to re-arrange my living room – I didn’t want to have the door to the corridor blocked again. I guess I’m just a couple of hormone surges away from totally redecorating the living room. But as of now: I couldn’t imagine it.

Und diese Dame (ja, ich habe entschieden, es ist eine Dame) ist der neueste Zuwachs! Eine Kollegin hat sie mir aus Peru mitgebracht. Was mich zu der Überzeugung brachte: Peru! Ich muss nach Peru! Dafür verabschiedete sich leider der Gitarre spielende Elch… just in dem Moment, in dem ich entschied, ihn sicherheitshalber mit der Heißklebepistole zu fixieren, stürzte er in der totalen Geweihverlust. Erste Hilfe kam zu spät. Aber morgen… gibt’s das dritte Türchen dieses Blog-Adventskalenders 🙂

And this lady (yes, I’ve decided it’s a lady) is the latest addition! A colleague gave it to me – it’s from Peru. Which in turn made me think: Peru! I have to go to Peru! Unfortunately, the guitar playing moose said good-bye… the very moment I decided to securely fix it with hot glue, it slipped off the branch and fell to a total loss of antlers. First Aid was too late. But tomorrow there’ll be the third door of this blog advent calendar 🙂
