Finally, a new post on August Kekule – albeit a brief one… there have been more creative outfits but we are ready for the match between Germany and Algeria, old August and I!

Endlich hat sich mal wieder jemand was schönes für den alten August einfallen lassen. Viele Monate lang war es einfach immer nur die einfallslose leere Bierflasche, die in seiner Hand landete. Dabei war man doch so viele schöne Einfälle gewöhnt, wie z.B. hier oder hier.

Finally somebody thought of something nice for old August again. For many months the epitome of creativity was an empty beer bottle in his hand. But we were used to really nice installations such as the ones here and here.

Heute nach Feierabend hatte ich dann einen wunderbaren Anblick vor unserem Haus, denn er ist zurück: Caros Baum! Das ist wahre Liebe – eine komplette Neuinstallation, diesmal extra gesichert.

Today when I came home form work our house was a great sight because it’s back: Caro’s maypole! That is true love – an all new installation, and this time with extra security.

Und nun noch schnell, auf mehrfache Nachfrage, meine neue Lieblingsecke:

Da ist es, 2014. Kam total unspektakulär daher. Irgendwie eine Frühgeburt, habe ich das Gefühl. Das kann ja noch gar nicht sein. Aber so denn – auf in die Weihnachtskartenproduktion! Heute allerdings wohl doch nicht mehr, obwohl ich eben die erste Challenge entdeckt habe.

Here it is, 2014. And it just came unannounced somehow. It feels like an early birth. It can’t be 2014 already, can it? Well, I guess I’ll start on the Christmas cards then! Okay, not today – even though I did find this year’s first challenge.

Stattdessen war ich auf einem kleinen Spaziergang, um für Our Beautiful World einige Bilder zum Thema „Neujahr“ einzufangen. Da ich zu Weihnachten eine Kamera mit 20-fach optischem Zoom bekommen habe, wollte ich auch damit mal ein bisschen rumprobieren – da kommt eins zum anderen.

Instead, I went on a little stroll in the neighboorhood to capture a few images for this week’s prompt at Our Beautiful World, „New Year“. I got a new camera for Christmas, too, with an amazing 20x optical zoom and wanted to play with that as well.

Aber leider sieht Deutschland nach der Silvesternacht in großen Teilen auch aus wie eine Müllhalde wegen der Überreste der großen Böllerei, für die ich quasi jährlich immer weniger Verständnis aufbringen kann. Aber das mag anderen mit Kartenbasteln oder Wintersport gucken ähnlich gehen.

Unfortunately, large parts of Germany look like a dump on New Year’s Day as from Dec. 27 thru Dec. 31 fireworks are available in any supermarket or large store. So what happens is that everybody is shooting them off anywhere and in any direction and the street I live on feels like a warzone drenched in color for about an hour. I hate it and my level of tolerance towards it decreases by the year. I would be the perfect companion for any pet hiding in the basement!

Aber ich habe auch nach langer Zeit nochmal beim alten August vorbeigeschaut. Den hat jemand mit einer Schaufel ausgestattet – wahrscheinlich noch einer, der sich nach ein bisschen Schnee sehnt. Aber die „Ski-Installation“ from 2010 war deutlich kreativer.

But I also passed by old August again after a long time. Somebody gave him a shovel – I suppose it was someone who is also hoping for a little snow. The „ski installation“ from 2010 was way more creative, though.

Erst jetzt habe ich ihn entdeckt, da mich seit gut einer Woche der Weg zur Arbeit nicht mehr an ihm vorbeiführt… denn ich radele nicht mehr zum Bahnhof, sondern gleich ins Büro. Der alte August hat wohl auch heftig St. Patrick’s Day gefeiert.

I’ve just found out about it as I haven’t been passing him for a while now (taking my bike directly to work instead of the train station). It seems as if old August has been celebrating St. Patrick’s Day, too.

Der Baum ist immer noch da, aber heute morgen auf dem Weg zum Bahnhof fand ich den alten August in neuem Style. Wobei ich nicht sicher bin, ob es erste Anzeichen von Karneval sind oder eher ein Pfadfinderoutfit…? Das Licht jedenfalls war unglaublich schön.

The tree is still there but this morning on my way to the train station I found old August sporting a new style. Though I’m not sure whether it’s a sign of carnival approaching or rather a boy scout outfit…? Anyway, the light was wonderful.

Das knackig-kalte-frische Winterwetter ist wohl schon wieder zu Ende, Regen naht, „aber es wird wärmer“ – als wäre das eine gute Nachricht… Die bessere: morgen ist schon Donnerstag!

The crispy-cold-fresh winter weather is apparently nearing its end again already, rain is coming, „but it will be warmer“ – as if that was good news… the better news: tomorrow is already Thursday!

Heute fand ich eine gelungene Überraschung im Briefkasten, als ich nach einer irgendwie erschöpfenden Woche nach Hause kam. Einen dicken Briefumschlag vom Deutschen Museum Bonn. Es ging mir kein Licht auf. Im Umschlag war ein umfangreiches Begleitbuch zur gerade eröffneten Ausstellung „Kekulés Traum“. Es ist das internationale Jahr der Chemie, wie ich dann erfuhr. Beim Buch auch ein Gutschein zum Besuch des Museums – eine SEHR gute Idee, denn, ähm, ich war noch nie da. Und im Begleitschreiben stand es: meine Einsendungen zum Fotowettbewerb zu den Kostümierungen der Kekulé Statue sind prämiert worden! Und sind Teil der Ausstellung. Davon muss ich mich natürlich in naher Zukunft selbst überzeugen 🙂

Upon getting home after a somehow very tiring week, I found a very nice surprise in my mailbox today. A thick envelope sent by Deutsches Museum Bonn. It didn’t ring a bell. Inside I found a substantial catalogue on the recently opened exhibition „Kekulé’s Dream“. Apparently, it’s the International Year of Chemistry. There was also a free ticket for the museum – a VERY good idea because, ahem, I’ve never been there. The accompanying letter explained it all: my entries into a photo competition on the varying costumes of the Kekulé statue were among the winners! And are part of the exhibition. Of course I need to verify that personnally in the near future 🙂

Hm, ich denke, die im letzten Eintrag gestellte Frage ist damit beantwortet, was?? Kekulé hat sich schick gemacht anlässlich der Ausstellung!

Mmh, I guess this answers the question posed in my last entry! Kekulé dressed up for the occasion – the opening of the exhibition!

August Kekulé hat sich schick gemacht – wofür nur??

August Kekulé has been dressed up and is all set – for what I wonder??

Im Winter berichtete ich hier über die August Kekulé Statue, die immer mal wieder der Saison entsprechend ausgestattet wird – damals mit Ski und den entsprechenden Stöcken. Und nun war es soweit: der Sommer ist da und Deutschland grillt, Kekulé mittendrin!

In winter I wrote on the August Kekulé statue that undergoes seasonal decorations – at the time he was carrying a pair of skies and the matching sticks. And now that summer’s here and Germany is barbecuing, Kekulé couldn’t be left out!
