Zehn Indikatoren / Ten indicators

Es gibt zehn Indikatoren, dass es nicht mehr weit ist bis Weihnachten:

  1. Es gibt Mandarinen in Kisten à 2,5kg zu kaufen – und sie schmecken.
  2. Meine Schwester beginnt den Verzehr von Dominosteinen – die mit Marzipan.
  3. An den Wochenenden können bis zu 10 Stunden Wintersport am Tag im Fernsehen verfolgt werden.
  4. Es gibt den Lebkuchen- und den Toffee Nut-Latte. Hmmmm.
  5. Die Chance, dass ich mich bastelnderweise mit einer in die Kerzenflamme geratenen leeren Tüte Marzipankartoffeln abfackele, steigt exponentiell.
  6. Ich  bin fast täglich auf der Post und nein, ich brauche keine Quittung.
  7. Plötzlich gibt es wieder Butter im Kühlschrank.
  8. Ich habe das irre Gefühl, Zeit zu haben – obwohl ich wahrscheinlich selten weniger habe.
  9. Ich habe das Bedürfnis, in die Langlaufloipe zu gehen – nicht, dass wir Schnee hätten oder die Temperaturen auch nur annähernd winterlich wären. Aber ich habe die Ski vom Speicher geholt – und finde nun die Schuhe nicht. Aber man muss ja vorbereitet sein.
  10. Plötzlich erscheinen mir Kerzen als Lichtquellen als soviel besser als alles andere.

There are ten indicators from which you can tell that Christmas must be around the corner:

  1. You can buy tangerines in boxes at 2.5kg – and they taste good.
  2. My sister begins to eat dominoes – the kind with marzipan, that is.
  3. TV offers winter sports broadcasts of up to ten consecutive hours on weekends.
  4. The gingerbread and toffee nut lattes are on offer. Mmmhhh.
  5. Chances that I catch fire in my creative nook because an empty bag of marzipan potatoes is too close to the candle flame increase exponentially.
  6. I go to the post office on a next to daily basis and no, I don’t need a receipt.
  7. Suddenly there’s butter in the fridge.
  8. I have the weird feeling that I have time on my hands though really there’s probably no time of year when there’s less.
  9. I feel the urge to hit a crosscountry ski run – not that there was any snow around or the tempratures anywhere near wintery. But I got the skis down from the attic – and now can’t find the shoes. You have to be prepared, right?
  10. I feel that candles are the best possible light source. Ever.

Erster Advent / First of advent

Es scheint, als hätte ich den Klabautermann doch noch nicht ganz aus der Wohnung verbannt. Denn obwohl der Baum ja aufgrund der gleich bleibenden Deckenhöhe nicht größer sein kann als im letzten Jahr, fehlen mir Kugeln. Es sind einfach nicht genug. Oder ich hatte auch letzes Jahr schon die Seite zum Bücherregal ausgespart… Naja.

It seems as if I hadn’t quite managed to get rid of the kobolds in my apartment. Despite the fact that the tree can’t possibly be any larger than last year (as the ceiling wasn’t raised or anything), quite an amount of ornaments are missing. There aren’t anywhere near enough. Or maybe I didn’t do the side facing the book shelf last year already… Oh well.

Mir schwant, dass ihr damit gerechnet habt, spätestens heute hier ein Foto meines Weihnachtsbaums zu sehen. Nun, das hatte ich auch vor. Aber die Kamera ist weg. Nein, nein: das kann nicht der Klabautermann gewesen sein – das war meine Dämlichkeit. Die habe ich liegen lassen beim Adventsauftakt in Aachen gestern. Ganz schlechter Zeitpunkt.

I’m pretty sure that you had expected to see a picture of the tree here today. Well, that was the plan. But the camera is gone. No, no: there’s no kobold involved here – that was just a case of daftness on my part. I left it in Aachen at the advent kick-off meeting amongst friends from uni days yesterday. Really bad timing.

So wird es auch ein bisschen schwierig mit dem Adventsfreebie Nummer 1. An jedem Adventssonntag wird es ein Freebie zu gewinnen geben. Und weil nun auch noch genügend Zeit bleibt, um traditionelle Weihnachtsgrüße per Karte zu verschicken, ist der erste Freebie ein 10er Set Weihnachtskarten mit meinem Weihnachtsdesign 2011. Ich hatte vorher schonmal ein paar Fotos von einigen Karten gemacht, so dass ihr eine Idee davon bekommt. Es handelt sich um 10 unterschiedliche Karten, die aber alle in etwa den hier gezeigten entsprechen, und sie werden in einer schönen Geschenkbox geliefert. Man könnte sie also auch auf einen Basar geben, wenn man sie selbst nicht benutzen möchte oder schon gekauft hat.

This poses quite a problem for my first blog candy in advent (which is to be followed by others on the three Sundays to come). And as there’s still plenty of time for your traditional Christmas cards to be written and sent out, this first blog candy is a set of 10 Christmas cards of my design 2011. I had previously made pictures of a few of them so you can get an idea of what they look like. The set comprises ten different cards but all are made to generally match the ones shown here – and they come in a nice box. So you could also donate them to a bazaar in case they’re not your style or you have bought all you need already.

„Let’s talk financing!“

Heute ist der Tag – der Freitag vor dem ersten Advent! Der Tag, an dem der Baum kommt. Und er kam, in meiner Abwesenheit. Er steht, hat ca. 3m und wird im Laufe des Abends noch mindestens mit den Lichterketten ausgestattet. Und wie immer war das Gespräch mit dem Händler wie dem untenstehenden Cartoon entlehnt 😉

Today’s the day – pre-advent Friday! The day when the tree comes to the house. And it did come, during my absence. It’s up already, is about 3m high and will be equipped with the lights – at least! – during the course of the evening. And as usual the conversation I had with the seller seemed to come right of the cartoon below 😉

Herannahender Advent / Advent approaching

Hier war es wieder zu lange still, aber die vergangene Woche hatte es auch wirklich in sich. Und die kommende wird nicht anders werden, besonders, da eine weitere Reise bevorsteht – am Montag melde ich mich aus einer weiteren an einem Fluss gelegenen Großstadt. Aber erstmal hieß es, die Außendeko in der Eifel auf Weihnachten zu trimmen. Das waren die Zutaten:

It’s been quiet here for too long again but this past week was really busy. And the coming won’t be much different as another trip is on the agenda – I will get back on Monday with news from another large city by a river. But before I left, there were seasonal decorations to be put up outside the house in the Eifel. These were the ingredients:

Die Stiefmütterchen und ihre Freunde blieben drin und erholen sich hoffentlich im Frühjahr vom harschen zu erwartenden Winter…

The pansies and their friends remained in the boxes and hopefully recover well from the harsh winter to come…

Und dann war da ja noch das Schokoladenfreebie – der Gewinner wurde gezogen und ist… ***TROMMELWIRBEL*** … Kathrin! Herzlichen Glückwunsch! Martinszug / St. Martin’s Day Parade


Eigentlich war St. Martin ja schon am 11.11. Aber weil ich zu der Zeit ja „leider“ in Budapest war, habe ich mir gestern den Stadtteilzug in Dottendorf angesehen. Ich finde den den schönsten überhaupt. Dann jedoch traf ich meinen ehemaligen Kollegen Uwe, der sagte, nichts ginge über Kessenich. Also werde ich nächstes Jahr mal den direkten Vergleich anstreben.

Actually, Saint Martin’s Day was on November 11 already. But „unfortunately“ I was in Budapest at the time so I went to see yesterday’s parade in the Dottendorf neighborhood. I think it’s the nicest ever. But then I met my fomer colleague Uwe who said that nothing beat Kessenich’s. So I guess I need to go for a direct comparison next year.

Ich denke, die deutschsprachigen Leser dieses Eintrags kennen den Brauch, dass ein Mann mit rotem Umhang hoch zu Ross einen Umzug von zumeist Kindern mit selbstgebastelten Laternen anführt. Er stellt den Heiligen Martin dar, einen römischen Soldaten, der in einer kalten Nacht seinen Mantel mit einem Bettler teilte.

I think the German readers of this entry will all know the story of St. Martin: a man with a red cloak is riding ahead of a parade of mainly children with their self-made lanterns. He impersonates Saint Martin, a Roman soldier who once met a freezing beggar in a cold night, took his sword and cut his cloak in two to share it with the begaar.

Einerseits kann man also die vielen selbstgemachten Laternen bewundern – die fast alle im Kindergarten oder der Schule gemacht wurden. Jede Gruppe/Klasse erkent man am gemeinsamen Motiv.

On the one hand, you can adore all those self-made lanterns. I guess all of them are made in kindergarten or school. There’s usually one motif per group/class.

Und dann sind es die wunderschön geschmückten Häuser.

And on the other hand, there are all those beautifully decorated houses.

Der Umzug endet dann am (mehr oder weniger) großen Martinsfeuer, wo alle zusammenkommen und mithilfe der Musikkappelle nochmal den ein oder anderen Martinsschlager schmettern.

The parade ends at the (more or less) huge bonfire where everybody gets together to do a last round of the traditional St. Martin’s songs along with the band.

Das traditionelle Gebäck ist der Weckmann – entweder ganz einfach mit zwei Rosinenaugen, oder über und über in Zucker gewälzt… oder auch so ein Prachtexemplar wie dieser!

The traditional pastry is the „Weckmann“ – which can be very simple with two eyes made of raisins, sometimes it’s all covered in sugar… or it can be a fancy guy like this one!

Sie werden aber selten alt…

They usually don’t get to live long, though…

Eindeutiges Zeichen / Clear sign

Nun bin ich schon wieder zurück aus Budapest… und das – ich komme einfach nicht drüber – in 2h48min vom Liszt Ferenc Flughafen Budapest bis zu meiner Couch. Wenn das kein Rekord ist! Es lebe der öffentliche Nahverkehr!! Auch wenn er mir zum Abschied in Budapest noch eine unerfreuliche Überraschung beschert hat: kein Mensch in der U-Bahn, dann eilt ein Ungar mit Walkie-Talkie an mir vorbei und schreit mich auf Ungarisch an, ich schreie auf Englisch zurück, dann kommt ein „Metro – no!! Bus! Bus!“ Auf der langen Rolltreppe hoch fuhren dann Dutzende Feuerwehrleute in die andere Richtung an mir vorbei… alles klar. Dann wurde es doch ein Taxi…

And now I’m already back from Budapest… in an amazing 2h48min from Liszt Ferenc airport in Budapest to my couch. It must be a record! Hip-hip-hooray to public transport!! But then it also provided me with an unwelcome surprise upon my Good-bye from Budapest: not a soul down in the subway, then a Hungarian with a radio runs past me and yells at me in Hungarian, so I yell back in English and so he shouts: „Metro – no!! Bus! Bus!“ So up the long escalator again while dozens of firefighters rush down… and it all falls into place. I ended up taking a taxi…

Und dann wieder am Rhein sehe ich gleich die eindeutigen Zeichen: der Weihnachtsmarkt kommt, es ist alles schon geplant!

And then back at the Rhine the signs are clear: the Christmas market is coming, it’s all laid out already!

Darf ich vorstellen… / May I introduce…

Auch wenn es sich schon seit einigen Tagen heimlich, still und leise eingeschlichen hat: heute mache ich es offiziell! Hiermit kommt der (neudeutsche) Relaunch meines Blogs, der nun – habt ihr es bemerkt? – unter http://www.knackeredgrouse.com erreicht wird. Cool, oder? 😉 Zwar verstehe ich in allen möglichen Anleitungen und Foren hauptsächlich Bahnhof, aber irgendwann werde ich mir wohl die kritische Menge Basisvokabular angeeignet haben, um dann auch Erklärungen relativ (!) komplexerer Sachverhalte zu verstehen.

I bet it happened without you noticing it over the past days so today I make the official announcement! This is the relaunch of my blog which can now be reached at – did you notice? – http://www.knackeredgrouse.com. Is that cool or what? 😉 I have to say that usually I don’t have the foggiest idea when reading manuals or forum entries but I guess that one of those days I’ll have acquired the critical amount of basic vocabulary to understand the relatively (!) complex issues as well.

Auch wenn es hier bis auf die Schriftart so ziemlich genauso aussieht wie vorher, gibt es aber doch einige Änderungen. Ich konnte mich noch nicht zu einem anderen Design durchringen… bei einem blauen war ich kurz davor, aber irgendwie bin ich dann doch ein Gewohnheitstier. Wie auch immer, für diejenigen unter euch, die mit RSS Feeds weiterhin nichts anfangen können oder wollen, gibt es jetzt auch die Möglichkeit, ein e-Mail Abo einzurichten. Nach dem Original einfach in der rechten Spalte gucken. Es gibt sogar schon drei Follower 🙂

Even if the new font is the only thing that you might notice at first sight, there are a few more changes. I couldn’t bring myself to choose a completely new theme… I was on the brink of risking it with a blue one but then I am a creature of habit after all. Anyway, for those of you who still have a problem with RSS feeds there’s now the option to become a follower (and get e-mail updates). Just have a look at the right column. Join the other 3 who are already there 🙂

Dann gibt’s jetzt einen Weihnachtscountdown. Da schwebte mir was anderes vor, aber das ist hier nicht so einfach, denn einige Befehle werden von WP nicht genehmigt. Ich sage jetzt nicht, wieviel Zeit drauf ging, das herauszufinden… oder die Tatsache, dass es ein Code in einer simplen Textbox ist – ein Dank dafür nach Kessenich und an eine hilfreiche Seele im Netz!

Then there’s the Christmas countdown. I was looking for something a lot different but it’s not easy here as some commands can’t be used on WP. I won’t tell you just how much time I wasted to figure that out… or the fact that a code in a simple text box does the job – my sincere thanks go to Kessenich and a helpful soul in the net!

Ja, und dann gibt es noch meine Würdigung des einzigen mir (persönlich) bekannten google+ Nutzers, der gleichzeitig auch ein treuer Leser dieses Blogs ist: man kann nun auch auf google+ teilen!

Well, and then there’s my appreciation of the only google+ user I know (as in personnally) and who happens to be a loyal reader of this blog: you can now share on google+, too!

Ich habe vor, in den nächsten Tagen mit Freebies und anderem zu feiern – es könnte sich also (noch mehr als sonst!) lohnen, hier regelmäßig vorbeizuschauen. Regelmäßig heißt täglich. 😉 Bis bald!

Aha! Doch Kunst! / Aha! Art after all!

Vor ca. zwei Wochen habe ich schonmal berichtet über die wundersam bunten, mit Graffiti versehenen Kästen in der Innenstadt. Es stellte sich mir die Frage, ob es wohl Kunst sein soll – diese wurde von Tim per Kommentar beantwortet: Ja, es soll Kunst sein! Und es gibt noch mehr davon, wie ihr hier sehen könnt.

It was about two weeks ago that I wrote about those strangely colorful boxes in the city, painted graffiti style. I wondered whether it was supposed to be art – this was answered in a comment by Tim: Yes, it’s supposed to be art! And there’s more of it as you can see in this entry.

Also dann… wisst ihr Bescheid! 😉

Babylonische Herbstgedanken / Babylonic fall ponderings

An solch einem Wahnsinnsnovembertag wie Dienstag strolcht man so durch die Gegend, irgendeinen Vorwand suchend, sich draußen zu bewegen. In nur 30 Minuten macht man dann fast ebensoviele Fotos.

On that positively gorgeous November day we had on Tuesday I found myself strolling through the neighborhood, looking for an excuse to be outside. It so happens that you take 30 pictures in about as many minutes.

Gerade mal wieder meiner Bastelwelt entstiegen, wo ich mir ein Weilchen lang die Kreationen von Gleichgesinnten aus aller Welt angesehen habe, dachte ich auf einmal, welche Vorteile es doch haben kann, wenn manche Dinge genormt sind.

I had just resurfaced from my creative hobby – I had been admiring the creations of like-minded people from around the world. And suddenly I couldn’t help thinking that there are moments when a bit of standardization isn’t all bad.

November!

 

Auch wenn es so warm ist, dass die Leute heute schon um 9 Uhr auf ihren Balkonen frühstückten: es ist der erste November. Und aus dem Bild oben lassen sich fünf Dinge erkennen:

  1. Der Herbst hat wunderschöne Farben.
  2. Ich mag Kürbisse.
  3. Für meine Küchenfensterdeko habe ich mich für alternative Halterungen entschieden.
  4. Das außengedämmte Haus (teilweise rechts zu sehen) sieht schnieke aus.
  5. DAS GERÜST IST WEG!

When you see all those people having breakfast on their balconies at 9 am already this morning you wouldn’t believe it but it’s the 1st of November! And on the picture above you can see five things:

  1. The beautiful colors of fall.
  2. I like pumpkins.
  3. I have decided on alternative ways to secure the decoration at my kitchen window.
  4. The newly insulated house (partly visible at right) looks fancy.
  5. THE SCAFFOLDING IS GONE!
