Muss man ein Katzenmensch sein, um an diesen kleinen Filmchen seine Freude zu haben? Ich erkenne allerdings nicht nur unsere diversen Katzen der letzten 40 Jahre wieder – Simon’s Cat hat an so einigen Dingen Spaß, die mir auch gefallen. Würde sie allerdings so in meinem Weihnachtsbaum rumturnen… das würde schlimm enden! Aber Hilfe beim Geschenke einpacken hatte ich von Sophie immer!

Do you have to be a cat person to like these little movies? Not only do I recognize our several cats of the past 40 years – Simon’s Cat also likes quite a few things that I like myself. But if he was all over my Christmas tree like that… we’d be in a fight! Sophie, too, was always helpig to wrap the presents!

Braucht ihr noch ein Geschenk für die, die alles haben? Da wäre eine „Friendship Box“ eine Möglichkeit – eine kleine Dose, die acht weihnachtlich gestaltete Gutscheine enthält… für die man selbst noch kreativ werden muss.

Wo hier von Freundschaft die Rede ist, möchte ich auch gleich noch was anderes loswerden: der aktuelle Spendenstand im Fundraiser für das Elisabeth-Hospiz in Lohmar sind sagenhafte 1.310 Euro! VIELEN DANK euch allen! Das ist schon ein Rekord… aber knacken wir die 1.500 noch? Es sind noch einige Pulswärmer und Mützen zu haben, wenige Pralinenbeutel und einige Karten. Und hiermit gebe ich die Friendship Box auch noch ins Rennen: für 15 Euro ist sie zu haben.

Talking about friendship: the current amount raised for the Elisabeth Hospice in Lohmar is a breathtakingly amazing 1,310 Euros! THANKS A LOT to all of you out there! That’s a record already… but maybe we reach 1,500? There are still some wristlets and hats to be had, as well as few bags of chocolates and a few cards. Am Wochenende war wieder Kaffeeklatsch-Zeit. Irgendwie wurde alles etwas hektisch – selbst auf das Thema kam ich relativ kurzfristig. Aber mit Unterstützung direkt aus Kuopio wurde es dann doch alles noch was. Und die Mustikka Pulla werden mit Sicherheit eine Wiederholung finden!

This past weekend it was time for my annual Christmas coffeeklatsch again. Somehow it was all very hectic – I decided on a motto with not a lot of time to work on it. But with some support directly from Kuopio it all did come into being. And the mustikka pulla will soon be made again, that’s for sure!

Neben den phänomenalen Mustikka Pulla (Hefebrötchen mit Heidelbeer-Vanille-Füllung, im Foto oben links unten) gab es noch finnische Weihnachtssterne und meine Eigenkreation Birnen-Spekulatius-Cupcakes. Zu sowas kommt es, wenn man plötzlich keine Schokolade mehr mag und voller Begeisterung Spekulatius-Oreos im Edeka entdeckt…

In addition to the phenomenal mustikka pulla (yeast buns with a blueberry-vanilla filling, on the lower left in the picture above) there where Finnish Christmas stars and my own creation of pear-speculaas cupcakes. That’s what happens when all of a sudden you develop a disgust of chocolate and go searching for a substitute and find the speculaas oreos in the supermarket…

Heute möchte ich euch mit Stuart McLean bekannt machen, der leider Anfang dieses Jahres verstorben ist. Einer Freundin aus Kanada, die ich vor vielen Jahren in Schweden kennengelernt habe, habe ich zu verdanken, dass ich ihn und die Geschichten aus dem Vinyl Café kennengelernt habe. Da geht es um Dave, der den Plattenladen Vinyl Café betreibt, seine Frau Morley und die Kinder Sam und Stephanie. Diese Geschichten kann man lesen – oder hören. Und hier hört ihr eine meiner Lieblingsgeschichten: Dave Cooks the Turkey. Plätzchen! Wie gesagt – die Zeit für Baklava ist eine andere 🙂 Der traditionelle Back-Marathon mit einer Freundin liegt nun hinter mir (uns) und unsere Ergebnisse können sich sehen lassen, zum Beispiel Katjas Cantuccini…

Heute fasse ich mich kurz: ein Wochenende voller weihnachtlicher Aktivitäten steht an. Aber ich möchte euch auf den aktuellen Stand bringen, was den diesjährigen Fundraiser für das Elisabeth Hospiz in Lohmar angeht. Er läuft ja noch – aber schon jetzt sind über 1.000 Euro zusammengekommen. Das sieht rekordverdächtig aus und ich kann nur sagen: vielen Dank! Und habt ein wunderbares zweites Adventwochenende!

I will keep it brief today: I’m headed for a weekend full of Christmas-related activities. But I’ve wanted to give you a quick update on this year’s fundraiser for the Elisabeth Hospice in Lohmar. It’s still on-going – but we have passed the 1,000 Euro mark now. It looks like it will be a record breaking year and all I can say is: Thank You! And enjoy this second weekend in advent!

Seit sage und schreibe 2009 postcrosse ich (ein Postkarten-Austausch, über den ihr hier mehr erfahrt). Im Rahmen dieses Hobbies habe ich Inge Löök bzw. ihre Arbeiten kennengelernt. Sie ist eine finnische Künstlerin und besonders ihre Serie der „alten Damen“ sind unter Postcrossern sehr bliebt. Und bei mir auch.

Incredibly, I have been postcrossing since 2009 (that’s an exchange of real paper postcards that you can learn more about here). Postcrossing introduced me to Inge Löök or rather: her work. She is a Finnish artist and her „old ladies“ series in particular is a favorite in the postcrossing community. And of mine.

Die Motive sind schräg, witzig und – unter den mir bislang bekannten zumindest – immer fröhlich. Die alten Damen sprühen vor Lebensfreude, egal, was sie unternehmen. Die machen Spaß. Und mit der Ente im zugeschneiten Wald den Weihnachtsbaum holen – das wäre ganz sicher auch mein Ding!

The motifs are quirky, funny and – at least all those I’ve come across so far – always exuding happiness. The old ladies are the embodiment of joie de vivre, no matter what they’re doing. They are fun. And to take the Citroen 2CV into the snow covered woods to get the Christmas tree – that’s something I’d like to try, too!

In diesem Jahr habe ich es zum ersten Mal überhaupt zum Weihnachtsmarkt am Kölner Dom geschafft. In Köln gibt es Dutzende Weihnachtsmärkte – bislang kannte ich nur den am Stadtgarten und der ist was wirklich besonderes.

This year I finally managed to see the Christmas market next to Cologne cathedral for the first time. There are dozens of Christmas markets in Cologne – so far I had only been at the Stadtgarten one which was really special.

Der Weihnachtsbaum misst stolze 28 Meter, ist mit mehreren tausend Kugeln und hunderten Meter Lichterketten geschmückt. Der Weihnachtsmarkt am Dom hat 150 Stände und da sind schon einige dabei, die ich so noch nicht gesehen habe. Wie zum Beispiel der mit Honigprodukten aus Rovaniemi.

The tree is 28 meters (92 feet) high, is adorned with thousands of ornaments and several hundred meters of lights. The Christmas market features 150 booths and there are quite a few with products that I have seen nowhere else so far. For example the honey products from Rovaniemi.

Oder dann auch die ganzen Väterchen Frost aus Russland – wie könnte man bei deren Anblick nicht über eine Erweiterung der Sammlung nachdenken?

Or all the Russian Jack Frosts – how could I not consider enlarging my tiny collection?

Dec/zember 6 – Secret Santa

Am Nikolaustag möchte ich euch mit einer Aktion aus Neuseeland bekannt machen. Ursprünglich von einem Privatmann initiiiert, ist es so gewachsen, dass die neuseeländische Post übernommen hat. Die Aktion ist also schon ein paar Jahre alt und nennt sich Secret Santa. Darüber bin ich im Guardian Weekly gestolpert. Da schicken sich wildfremde Leute Weihnachtsgeschenke. Offenbar gibt es dabei nur sehr wenige „Absahner“, also solche, die zwar bekommen, aber nie versenden.

As today is St. Nicholas I would like to introduce you to a campaign that’s been going on in New Zealand for a few years already. It was originally conceived by a gentleman who later handed it over to the New Zealand postal service when it had grown too big for him to manage. The campaign is called Secret Santa. I came across it in the Guardian Weekly. The point of it all is that people send out Christmas presents to strangers. Apparently, the percentage of „bad Santas“ – those who sign up but never send a present – is very low.

Habt ihr Lust? Könnte ja auch Teil des Kindness Calendars sein… wenn man zum Beispiel den 14.12. ein bisschen umdeutet (jemandem ein bisschen Geld und eine nette Nachricht hinterlassen). Vielleicht sagen wir einfach mal: eine Weihnachtskarte schicken und was klitzekleines mit rein, mehr symbolisch. Gucken wir doch einfach mal: wer hier in den Kommentaren bis Freitag, 08.12. um 18 Uhr MEZ hinterlassen hat, dass er dabei sein möchte… ist dabei. Ich werde dann am Samstagmorgen matchen, Adressen anfordern und entsprechend weitergeben.

That could be fun, right? And it could be a part of the kindness calendar as well… if we look for a little alternative interpretation of December 14 there (leave some money with a happy note for somone). Why don’t we do it like this: send a Christmas card and add a tiny little something, more as a gesture. So let’s see: if you leave a comment saying you’re in until Friday, December 8 at 6 p.m. CET… you’re in. I will match people Saturday morning, get the addresses and send out the addresses according to the matches.

Am 02. Dezember habe ich den Kindess calendar vorgestellt (Und? Wie läuft’s? Macht ihr mit?) – aber ein Adventskalender, den man von lieben Menschen geschenkt bekommt, ist quasi eine 24-teilige liebenswürdige Geste. So eine habe ich per Post bekommen… und entschieden, ihn im Schlafzimmer aufzubauen. Damit der Fokus am Morgen gleich vom Wecker auf was deutlich schöneres wechselt.

I introduced you to the kindness calendar on December 2 (How is it going? Have you followed it?) – but an advent calendar that you receive as a gift from lovely friends, is basically a 24-piece act of kindness, too. I got this one in the mail… and decided to set it up in my bedroom for a change. So that my focus in the morning can switch instantly from the alarm clock to something decidedly nicer.

Ob das nun zwei niedliche Rentiere sind, ein kleines Glas Aprikosenmarmelade (damit war das Frühstück entschieden) oder ein paar wunderschöne embellishments für zukünftige Karten. Der Tag fängt definitiv mit einem Lächeln an. Apropos: heute bittet uns der Kindness Calendar mal zu zählen, wie viele Leute man anlächelt. Also ich schonmal, über die Entfernung, die zwei lieben Menschen, die mir diese Freude gemacht haben.

This may be two cute little reindeer, a small glass of apricot jam (breakfast was decided) or a few gorgeous embellishments for future cards. It makes you start your day with a smile. Talking about it: the kindness calendar for today asks us to count how many people we smile at today. Well, I definitely started, over the distance, smiling at the two lovely friends who treated me to this advent calendar.
