Oh, ich hatte selbst nicht mehr daran geglaubt, dass ich es diesen Monat schaffen würde, fünf Karten für die Challenge bei CCAYR fertig zu kriegen. Aus einer Liste von Materialien waren vier zu wählen, die man bei seinen Karten benutzt. Da dieses Regen-Wahnsinnswochenende mit überraschend vielen Sportübertragungen einhergeht, hat das alles noch geklappt. Hier die Liste:

Well, I hadn’t believed in it myself anymore – that I’d manage to make five cards for this month’s challenge at CCAYR. There’s a list of materials from which you need to choose four to use on your creations. As the crazy rains this weekend coincide with a surprising amount of sports broadcasts on TV the cards came into being. Here’s the list:

C hipboard
H and stitching
R ibbon
I nking
S tamping
T extured paper (embossed is good!)
M etal embellishments
A lphabet stickers or rub-ons for the sentiment
S tripes

Ich habe mich schwer getan – aber der Dung ist zurück! Das ist mein „textured paper“, dazu ein Stück (Filz-)Schleife/“ribbon“, Streifen sind dabei und Text.

This challenge gave me a hard time – but the dung is back! It’s my textured paper, then a piece of (felt) ribbon, stripes and text.

Es gibt auch ein erstes Mal: zum ersten Mal habe ich fünf gleiche Karten gemacht, keine verschiedenen zum gleichen Thema.

And there’s a first: for the first time I’ve made five of a kind, not different ones along the same subject.

Und was jetzt?! Mir wird sicher was einfallen…

Gute Ideen / Good ideas

In den letzten Wochen bin ich über ein paar gute Ideen des Fundraising gestoßen, die eine mehr, die andere weniger privat. Im Juli war ich auf einer Geburtstagsparty eingeladen. Das Geburtstagskind bat um Gegenstände aus dem Haushalt, die man selbst, warum auch immer, nicht wirklich benutzt, die aber anderen gefallen könnten. Diese wurden dann zugunsten eines Projekts zur Kinderarmut versteigert. Zum guten Zweck kam noch dazu, dass es eine Menge Spaß gebracht hat. Auch, wenn das Geburtstagskind die Orgelpfeife selbst ersteigern musste… Und natürlich war klar, für wen die Sandprobe unter den Auktionsstücken gedacht war 😉

I’ve come across a couple of interesting fund raising ideas recently. One of them more of the private kind, the other more public and truly far reaching. I was invited to a birthday party back in July. The birthday girl had asked her guests to bring objects we have at home and don’t use – but that might appeal to one of the other guests. These were then auctioned off for the benefit of a local project to alleviate poverty among children. In addition to helping the good cause we also had a blast. Even though the birthday girl had to bid on the organ pipe herself… And it was crystal clear that the sand sample had been put out as bait for a very particular person 😉

Und vor wenigen Tagen dann kam ich über eine der berühmten Challenges zu einer Aktion zugunsten einer Australierin, Lyndall Currie, die an einer ausgefallenen Art Krebs leidet. Da geht es um die finanzielle Unterstützung der Familie. Die „Card Making Community“ wurde gebeten, Karten zu schicken, die online verkauft werden können. Dann gibt es auch noch ein großes Charity Event am 10. September, wo es um ganz andere Größenordnungen geht. Aber diese Karten aus aller Welt haben mich fasziniert… und mittlerweile kann man ein ganzes Kilo für 7 Euro per Luftpost nach downunder bringen.

A few days ago I came across a fund raiser for an Australian woman, Lyndall Currie, via one of the famous challenges. She suffers from a rare cancer and this is about raising money for her family who is struggling financially. The card making community was asked to send cards to be sold online. There’s also a big charity event September 10 which is a whole different thing. But I was fascinated by the idea of cards from all over the world… and nowadays you can get a whole kilo airmailed to Australia for just 7 Euros…

Solche Ideen kann man brauchen!

Holiday Fall to Layout

Auch bei den Jingle Belles bin ich in dieser Woche aktiv. Dort gilt es, eine Karte zu entwerfen, die nebenstehender Designvorlage folgt. Auf die quadratische Grundform habe ich mit Blick auf’s Porto verzichtet.

I made it to participate at this week’s challenge at the Jingle Belles as well. They are asking for a card that follows the sketch to the left. Due to the higher postage I’ve passed on the square layout, though.

Die Karte hätte auch gut in einen Schneeflocken-Wettbewerb gepasst… Gerne hätte ich auch noch eine Schneeflockenbordüre gehabt!

It would have been perfect for a „snowflake“ challenge as well… I just wish I’d had a snowflake border as well!

Freu mich schon auf die nächste Herausforderung!

Cards for Men/Boys and Something New

Nun. Irgendwie bin ich ziemlich platt und wäre einem einmonatigen Urlaub in der Einsamkeit finnischer Wälder (See und Sauna inklusive) nicht abgeneigt. Nur ein Stapel Bücher und ich. Und der gelegentliche Elch. Aber so läuft es nicht.

Well. I’m really exhausted and feel like escaping to the Finnish backwoods (lake and sauna included). Just a stack of books and I. And the occasional moose. But that’s not how it works.

Immerhin bin ich, inspiriert vom Kölner Zoo, endlich wieder kreativ gewesen und beteilige mich mit diesem Eintrag gleich bei zwei Challenges: bei Winter Wonderland heißt es in dieser Woche „Cards for Men/Boys“. Bei Bah!Humbug! geht es um „Something New“. Und da kommt der Kölner Zoo (Shop) ins Spiel. Es geht um das Papier, die Karte. Es ist… schon irgendwie eklig wenn man darüber nachdenkt. Weil… nun ja, weil es aus Elefantendung gemacht wurde. Jetzt ist es raus. Es ist aus Sri Lanka. Und das ist wirklich ein Material, mit dem ich bislang nicht gearbeitet habe.

Inspired by Cologne Zoo, at least I’ve been creative again and will participate in two challenges with this entry: „Cards for Men/Boys“ is a real challenge at Winter Wonderland this week. And then there’s „Something New“ at Bah!Humbug! and that is where the Cologne Zoo (Store) comes in. It’s about the paper, the card. It’s… kind of gross when you think about it. Because… well, because it’s made from elephant dung. There, I said it. It’s from Sri Lanka. And that really is a material I’ve never worked with before.

Oh je… / Oh dear…

Das war aber mal ein Freebie… es gab drei Teilnehmer, aber keine richtige Antwort. Ich befürchte, man hat sich vom Dateinamen des Bildes (ein Arbeitstitel, denn ich wusste selbst nicht, was es war) verwirren lassen… denn der erscheint, wenn man mit der Maus über das Bild gleitet. Es ist nicht der Ziegenbart – jedenfalls konnte ich dieses Gewächs nirgendwo unter diesem Namen finden. Es handelt sich viel mehr um das Waldgeißblatt.

What kind of a freebie was that? There were three participants but no right answer. I guess people got confused by the file name of the picture (a working title as I didn’t know what it was either)… it appears when you take the mouse across the picture. It’s not Ziegenbart – at least I couldn’t find this plant under this name anywhere. In fact it’s the Common Honeysuckle.

Nun ja – leider also kein Gewinner. Ich wünsche trotzdem allen eine schöne Woche und gebe noch kurz den aktuellen Stand der großen Wette durch. Irma hat ihr Ziel erreicht – und das trotz täglichen Eiskonsums im Urlaub! Herzlichen Glückwunsch!

Iserlohn?!

Wo liegt Iserlohn?! Bei Hagen. Und warum sollte man dorthin fahren? Etwa wegen der gepflegten Innenstadt?

Where is Iserlohn located? Near Hagen (as if that meant anything to you from far away…). And why should anyone go there? For a look at the nicely kept downtown?

Man beachte den fantastischen blauen Himmel! Aber nein, es ging nicht um Architektur. Und auch nicht um kreative Toilettentüren in einem Bistro am Neuen Markt.

Notice the fantastic blue sky! But no, it wasn’t about architecture. And neither about creative toilet doors in a bistro at the Neuer Markt.

Es ging um ein Treffen mit guten Freunden aus Afghanistaner Zeiten, die mal wieder im Lande waren. Leider war es viel, viel zu kurz, aber ich habe Hoffnung, dass es auch mal ausgedehnter sein könnte.

It was about a reunion with good friends from Afghanistan days who happened to be around. Unfortunately, the reunion was much, much too short but I still have hope that one day a longer one can be arranged.

Urlaubs-Freebie / Vacation freebie

Nachdem wir gestern eine große Ladung Sperrmüll klar gemacht haben und die heute IM SONNENSCHEIN durch zwei Anfahrten des Entsorgungsbetriebs abgeholt wurden, ist der Regen zurückgekehrt. Und das sollen morgen 30 Grad werden?! Mal sehen.

After we put out a huge load of bulky waste which was picked up today by two trucks in BRIGHT SUNSHINE, the rain has returned. Supposedly, it will be 30C tomorrow… we’ll see.

Brombeeren / Blackberries

In diesen Eifler Tagen ist heute Sommer gewesen! Wir hoffen, dass er morgen auch nochmal vorbeikommt, denn mit dem grillen hat es nicht geklappt. Dafür war mir bei einem Spaziergang mit einer seit Ewigkeiten nicht gesehenen englischen Freundin gestern aufgefallen, dass die Brombeeren hier langsam reif werden.

My Eifel days awarded me with summer today! We hope it will return again tomorrow as we didn’t manage to have a barbecue. But on a little stroll with a „long lost“ English friend yesterday I noticed that the blackberries are getting ready to be taken.

So klein, wie sie dieses Jahr ausfallen, ist Marmelade keine Option – aber mir kam sofort der Gedanke, dass meine Likörauswahl um eine weitere Varietät bereichert werden könnte. Nachdem ich weihnachtliche Köstlichkeiten in Aussicht gestellt hatte, konnte ich auch noch kurzfristig einen ortskundigen Erntehelfer gewinnen: „Do fahre mir dä Wääch do rüwer und dann fahre me longs araaf und fahren rächs araaf bis op de Wääch zum Suddelpösch hin.“

They are really tiny this year so making jam really isn’t an option – but almost immediately it dawned on me that I was only moments away from creating another liqueur variety. When I offered to provide my delicacies at Christmas, I was able to recruit a local harvester who knew his way around: „…[impossible to translate]…“

Die leckeren Beeren hingen zumeist so hoch, dass man den blöden Fuchsbandwurm wohl ausschließen kann… dafür könnten sich nun einige Maden in Formaldehyd, eh, Rum bzw. Whiskey befinden. Ich bin jedoch der festen Überzeugung, dass die in Sachen Geschmack den Kick ausmachen – und dann auch raus gefiltert werden 😉

The yummy berries were hanging way up high so we didn’t have to worry about a certain kind of tapeworm that is spread by foxes… but there might be a few tiny maggots in formaldehyde, eh, rum or whiskey respectively. I’m firmly convinced, though, that they will lend the product a very special taste – and will be filtered out anyway 😉

Gott sei Dank gibt es auch hier einen Hammer (und noch viel mehr). Ich musste zwar keine Kerne kleinhacken, aber ich habe große, afghanische Brocken Kandis zerschlagen müssen, um es in die Flaschen zu kriegen. Ugandische Vanille war auch vorhanden, aber so langsam geht mir der Vorrat dann doch zu Ende. Noch überlege ich, ob ich einen Hauch Muskat hinzufügen soll. Und wenn ja, in die Flasche mit Rum, die mit Whiskey oder beide?? Hat irgendwer einen Tipp?

Thank God I also found a hammer here (and much, much more). I didn’t have to chop up cherry stones but large pieces of rock candy I once brought from Afghanistan. Ugandan vanilla was also in store but slowly my stock is being depleted. I’m still wondering whether I should add just a touch of nutmeg. And if so, should I add it to the rum or the whiskey variety – or both? A tip anyone?

Jetzt hätte ich den Abend gerne noch mit Sternschnuppengucken beendet, aber es sind wieder Wolken da und es nieselregnet sogar 😦 Aber morgen wird die Sonne wiederkehren, ich bin mir sicher. Ganz, ganz sicher. In diesem Sinne…

I would have loved to finish the day watching shooting stars but the clouds have returned and there’s even a drizzle 😦 But the sun will return, I’m sure. Very, very sure.
