Als allererstes ein ganz großes Dankeschön an Our Beautiful World für die heute morgen veröffentlichte Aufforderung, Fotos zum Thema Herbst zu veröffentlichen (oder vielmehr Ros‘ Beitrag!). Es wird noch einen Regentag geben, an dem ich das Bad putzen kann…

First of all a big thank you to Our Beautiful World for publishing this week’s prompt „Autumn“ this morning (or rather Ros‘ entry!). There will be a rainy day when I can go about cleaning the bathroom…

Ich wäre wieder nicht rausgegangen und was war es für ein wunderbarer Morgen! Und ja, dieser Eintrag wird fotomäßig ziemlich ausführlich werden.

Again, I wouldn’t have spent time outside and what a wonderful morning it was! And yes, this post will be picture-heavy!

Ich hatte anfänglich noch gedacht, dass ich auch noch ein paar Fotos vom vorletzten Wochenende einfügen würde – da hatte ich Besuch von Freunden und wir haben uns wirklich alles angesehen und besonders die vielen Frösche beobachtet. Aber das hätte dann doch den Rahmen gesprengt.

I had originally planned to include a few pictures from two weeks ago when friends came to visit and we had a look at nearly everything and especially watched all the frogs. But it would have been way too much.

Es gab auch ein paar Bewohner, die den Sonntagmorgen zum Ausschlafen nutzten:

An manchen Stellen war man fast geblendet von der Intensität der Farben.

In some places you were almost blinded by the intensity of colors.

Die Bienen und Hummeln waren schon hellwach (mehr oder weniger… die riesige dicke Hummel links oben hat sich nur gaaaanz langsam bewegt und schon gar nicht von dieser Blüte weg).

The bees and bumblebees were wideawake already (more or less… that huge bumblebee in the upper left picture moved veeeeeery slowly and not away from this flower).

Da ist echt noch Leben drin… bis Ende Oktober kann man noch Montag-Freitag und sonntags bis 18 Uhr vorbeischauen, dann sehen mich wahrscheinlich Öffnungszeiten-bedingt erst die Rhododendren wieder. Naja, kommt wahrscheinlich auf den Winter an.

It’s full of life still… it’s still open on the summer schedule until the end of October: Monday thru Friday and Sunday until 6 pm. Due to the limited opening hours in winter the next time I’ll be there I’ll probably see the rhodies already. Well, it probably depends on the winter that’s ahead.

Tja, und mit dem Superzoom kann ich nun auch Fotos machen, die vorher nicht möglich waren – da eröffnen sich noch ganz andere Motive. Wie die Zapfen dieser Libanonzeder.

And with my much loved super zoom I can now take pictures that weren’t possible before – there are a whole lot of new motives. Like the cones of this Lebanon cedar.

Trotz des Titels geht es in diesem Beitrag nicht um das wunderbare Buch Wo die wilden Kerle wohnen von Maurice Sendak, sondern um einen faszinierenden Besuch in „meinem“ Botanischen Garten hier in Poppelsdorf.

The title is a bit misleading as this post is not about Maurice Sendak’s wonderful book Where the Wild Things Are but about a fascinating visit at „my“ Botanical Gardens here in Poppelsdorf.

Dort lief bis vergangenen Freitag eine Ausstellung des Glasstudios Borowski, die, im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes, den Garten bevölkerte. Es zeigte sich mal wieder, dass ich viel zu lange nicht dort gewesen war, denn eigentlich hatte man gut zwei Monate Gelegenheit, die Ausstellung zu besuchen. Aber nur zu Eröffnung und zur Schließung auch im Rahmen einer Nachtöffnung, zu der man die Exponate auch illuminiert bewundern konnte (zum großen Teil zumindest).

Friday was the last day of an exhibition by Glasstudio Borowski which quite literally populated the Garden. It was apparent that I hadn’t been there in too long a time as really there were two months during which you had the chance to have a look at it. But only for the opening and closing there was a special „night opening“ of the Garden when the exhibits were illuminated (large numbers at least).

Um 20 Uhr angekommen, hatten wir glücklicherweise noch eine kurze Zeit Gelegenheit, uns auch die nicht beleuchteten Objekte anzusehen – oder auch beleuchtete in ihren Details an nicht-beleuchteten Partien zu bestaunen, wie zum Beispiel bei dem Gürteltier oben. Doch im Urwald war es schon früh richtig dunkel:

We got there at about 8 pm and were lucky to have a few minutes of daylight left to have a closer look at the exhibits that were not illuminated – or to have a look at parts of illuminated ones that didn’t get to shine, like on the armadillo above. But in the primeval forest section it was really dark very soon:

Da gab’s auch Igel, die für mich aber auch ein bisschen wie millionenfach vergrößerte Bakterien aussahen:

There were hedgehogs as well even though I couldn’t shed the thought that they looked like bacteria enlarged millionfold:

Es fällt schwer zu sagen, was mir am besten gefallen hat, aber der „Schweinestall“ war ganz vorn dabei.

I have a hard time saying which part I liked most but the „hog house“ certainly scored high:

Neben tierischen Skulpturen gab es aber auch pflanzliche:

There weren’t only animal sculptures, though, I also spotted some plants:

Die Krokodile waren weit weg, auf einer Halbinsel, dafür waren die Bienen ziemlich aufdringlich.

The crocodiles were far away, on a peninsula, but the bees were kind of obtrusive.

Was für eine schöne Ausstellung… ich hatte mir eingebildet gelesen zu haben, dass sie weiterwandert nach RHS Wilsey in England, aber ich kann online dafür nirgendwo mehr einen Hinweis finden. Habe ich mir das eingebildet?! Wie und wo auch immer: den Besuch wert! Und damit wünsche ich einen schönen Restsonntag!

Such a great event… I thought I had read somewhere that the exhibition was moving to RHS Wilsey in England from here but I can’t find a trace of that information anywhere online anymore. Was I hallucinating?! Where- and whenever: well worth a visit! And with that I hope you’re enjoying your Sunday!

Heute muss ich mit einem zweiten Header beginnen… sind doch alle anderen Fotobeiträge Collagen… und die möchte ich irgendwie nicht am Anfang sehen. Wie unschwer zu erkennen, war ich mal wieder im Botanischen Garten, wo heute allerhand los war anlässlich des UN-Tags der Artenvielfalt. Tipp vorab: wer sich gerne Seerosen ansieht, sollte in der nächsten Woche aufschlagen – jetzt schon wunderschön, in den kommenden Tagen wohl in voller Pracht.

I have to start with a second header today… all other pictures come in collages which somehow I want to keep for later. As you might have guessed already: I paid the Botanical Gardens a visit again. There was quite a lot going on there, it being the UN Day of Biodiversity. A tip bfore I move on: if you’re into water lilies, this is the week to go – they were just gorgeous and will be perfect soon.

Heute morgen sah ich noch, dass es bei Our Beautiful World in dieser Woche um „Spots“ geht, also Punkte/Flecken. Das kann so schwer nicht sein, dachte ich mir, aber meine ersten Objekte wollten nicht so recht.

Before I went there this morning I noticed that this week’s prompt at Our Beautiful World is Spots. I thought that was going to be a literal walk in the park but no. My preferred photo objects were very shy.

Ihr habt vielleicht anlässlich des Save the Frog Day schon genug dieser Tierchen gesehen, aber die kleine Familie da unten ist doch allerliebst, oder? Also… ich habe nicht die geringste Ahnung, ob Frösche in Familien leben, aber es sieht hier gerade so aus. Und gepunktet sind sie auch noch. Ob die Libellen gepunktet sind?? Es könnten auch Streifen sein.

When I wrote about Save the Frogs Day you might have seen enough of those already but don’t you just love that little frog family down there? Well… I don’t have the foggiest whether frogs actually live in families but this at least looks like it. And they have spots, the lot of them. Do you think the dragon flies have spots? Or maybe they are stripes…

Aber diese Mohnblüte hat ganz fette Punkte! Und diese Libelle hat brav ganz lange still gehalten für dieses Foto im Megazoom. Puls kontrollieren, Luft anhalten, Anschlag halten, nicht auf die Nähmaschine warten. Ach nein, das war Biathlon.

But this poppy has HUGE spots! And this dragon fly was sitting there forever, giving me the chance to take this amazing picture – using an enormous zoom. Control your pulse, pipe down, keep aiming position and avoid shaking legs at all costs. Ah no, that was biathlon.

Und nun zum Abschluss noch ein paar grellbunte Blüten… und wisst ihr was: Ich habe bestimmt mittlerweile 2000 Fotos aus dem Botanischen Garten auf meiner Festplatte – und es gibt immer noch Blüten, die ich nicht gesehen habe. Immer noch Überraschungen. Ich meine – so schön der Garten ist, er ist ja nun nicht gerade gigantisch groß.

And now a few colorful blooms for the road, so to speak… and you know something? I must have about 2,000 pictures from these Botanical Gardens on my hard drive – and there are still new blooms that I haven’t seen before. Still surprises. I mean – they are beautiful gardens but they’re not HUGE. And still.

Und nun: einen schönen Restsonntag und einen guten Start in die Woche!

Das Wochenende brachte nun doch nicht die erhoffte Kartenflut, denn ich hatte mich am Samstag spontan entschlossen, dass BILLY-Diplom zu erlangen. Also auf ins schwedische Möbelhaus meines Vertrauens… und die ungefähr 200kg Rohmaterialien wurden noch am gleichen Abend geliefert. Nun sitze ich hier und möchte den Blick gar nicht mehr abwenden von meiner Eckkombination, deren Aufbau extrem erschwert wurde von nicht rechtwinklig angelegten Mauern und einem deutlich abschüssigen Dielenboden. Doch es ist vollbracht und ich habe es auch noch geschafft, die Donauwelle rechtzeitig zum Frühlingsfest im Melbgarten zu bringen.

The weekend did not bring a huge creative output after all – on Saturday I decided on a whim to earn my BILLY diploma. So I went to my favorite Swedish furniture store. The materials were delivered that same day. And now I sit in my living room and don’t want my gaze to wander away from my fabulous „corner combination“. The assemblage of said construction wasn’t exactly made easy by the fact that the walls here are not at right angles and to make matters worse the wooden floor turned out to be hanging quite a bit. But it is done and I also managed to deliver my Waves of the Danube“-cake to the spring fest at Melbgarten in time.

Und während ich so Bücher aus- und wieder einräumte, fielen mir doch einige in die Hände, die ich noch nicht gelesen habe. Ich habe sie mir notiert… es sind an die 50 Stück. Offensichtlich habe ich also ein neues Hobby: tsundoku. Das ist Japanisch und bedeutet: „der Vorgang, ein Buch nach dem Kauf ungelesen liegen zu lassen, typischerweise in Haufen mit anderen solchen ungelesenen Büchern.“ Das habe ich in einem Artikel zu nicht übersetzbaren Wörtern im Guardian Weekly gefunden. Ein sehr praktischer Begriff und dank Sudoku auch einigermaßen eingängig.

And while I was taking books off the old shelves and then later putting them back onto the new shelves I noticed quite a few that I haven’t read yet… about 50. Apparently, I have a new hobby: tsundoku. That’s Japanese for „the act of leaving a book unread after buying it, typically piling it up together with other such unread books.“ I had found that definition in an interesting article about untranslatable words in the Guardian Weekly a couple of weeks ago. That word comes in handy and thanks to sudoku is rather catchy, too.

Apropos japanisch: wenn ihr euch über die Pflanze oben rechts wundert… das ist eine Arisaema sikokianum – aus Japan. Der Melbgarten sah, nicht ganz unerwartet, dieses Jahr nämlich ganz anders aus als letztes Jahr. Die Blüten waren größtenteils durch, dafür waren die Beete voller und eben auch solche Pflanzen konnte man bestaunen. Und – NATÜRLICH – noch ein paar Rhododendren!! Es kam mir der wilde Gedanke, aus dem Dahlienbeet in der Eifel mein eigenes Rhododendron-Rondell zu machen. Muss mal mit dem Hausvorstand sprechen, was der davon hält.

Speaking of Japanese: if you wonder about that outlandish plant on the right (picture above): that’s an arisaema sikokianum – from Japan. The Melbgarten looked quite a lot different than last year but that didn’t come as a surprise. The bloom of so many plants and trees had already finished but instead the flowerbeds were more crowded already… and with plants that were not much to look at around this time last year. And – OF COURSE – there were a few rhodies left!! And suddenly the thought popped up in my head that I should make my own rhododendron bed in the Eifel… only what to do with the dahlias? I have to discuss it with the boss and see what he thinks about it.

Gerade habe ich Silvester gefeiert – ich kann das mexikanische Essen, das es gab, quasi noch schmecken, besonders die fantastische Guacamole – und gestern war plötzlich der erste Mai! Und die Kastanien, besonders auf der Poppelsdorfer Allee, geben alles.

Only recently I celebrated New Year’s Eve – I can still practically taste that yummy Mexican dinner we were having, the fantastic guacamole in particular – and suddenly yesterday it was May 1! And the chestnuts, especially those on Poppelsdorfer Allee, are giving it all they’ve got.

Und wie immer am ersten Mai mache ich mich auf einen kurzen Spaziergang zur Inspektion der zahlreichen Maibäume, die in meiner direkten Nachbarschaft stehen. Man kommt etwa alle 45 Sekunden an einem vorbei. Hier eine – und ich möchte betonen: kleine, Auswahl:

And as usual on May 1 I went out on stroll in the neighborhood to have a look at all the „may trees“ that were erected during the night. I would think that on average you pass one every 45 seconds. Here’s a small selection (the emphasis being on small):

Ist euch der etwas ausgefallenere Schmuck an Jills Baum aufgefallen? Und Sonjas Baum ist doch wohl ein Meisterwerk von Anpassung an den Standort! Aber auch der folgende fällt wegen seiner Nachhaltigkeit aus dem Rahmen:

Have you noticed the slightly more unusual decorations on Jill’s tree? And I love Sonja’s tree for the pure inventiveness when it comes to fitting a tree in a very limited space! But this one is really special, too – for its focus on sustainability:

Am Vorabend (oder früh am Morgen) war ich von der Geburtstagsparty eines Kollegen gekommen und hatte voller Freude auch an unserem Haus einen eindrucksvollen Baum vorgefunden. Der war für CARO. Umso größer der Schock zu Beginn meines Spaziergangs:

The night before when I came home from a colleague’s birthday party I saw that someone had put up an impressive tree in front of our house, too, for CARO. All the more shocked I was when I started out on my stroll:

Was ist hier passiert?! Und nein, ich war absolut nüchtern – da war ein Baum! Ich bin noch auf die andere Straßenseite gewechselt, um ihn mir genau ansehen zu können. Hatte da jemand einer Dame einen Baum aufgestellt, die vergeben war?! Hatte der Freund ihn im besoffenen Kopp am falschen Haus angebracht? Oder war der Baum am richtigen Haus, vom richtigen Typen – und es gibt einen anderen, der einen Keil zwischen die beiden treiben will? Haben die beiden Zoff und die Beschenkte griff am Morgen erstmal zur Motorsäge? Hm, das hätte ich wohl doch gehört. Und wer ist Caro überhaupt? Es ist ein Mysterium. Vielleicht war das Herz nicht so schön, wie diese Highlights:

What happened?! And no – I didn’t have a single drop of alcohol – there had been a tree there! I even went across the street in the middle of the night to get a good look at it. Had this tree been put up for a lady who was otherwise attached? Was the boyfriend wasted and put it up at the wrong house? Or maybe the tree was at the right house and from the right guy – and there is another one trying to drive a wedge between the two? Or the two are not on speaking terms and she just got out her chain saw first thing in the morning? Mmh, I guess I would have heard that. And who is Caro, anyway? It’s a mystery. Maybe the heart wasn’t as beautiful as these highlights:

Einen kurzen Abstecher habe ich natürlich auch noch zum Botanischen Garten gemacht, da waren wenigstens glückliche Pärchen zu beobachten.

Of course I also had a quick look at the Botanical Gardens – at least you could sneak a peek at some happy couples there.

Und ich sah diese fantastische Rasenfläche – ich hoffe, die wird genauso belassen. Ich beobachte das!

And I saw this great lawn – I really hope they’ll keep it just like that. I will keep checking!

Am Sonntag findet übrigens das Frühlingsfest im Melbgarten statt – in den Anlagen am Nachtigallenweg 66. So sah das im letzten Jahr aus (klick!). Ich kann nur sagen: es lohnt sich und das Kuchenbuffet wird eine Donauwelle im Angebot haben! Mit oder ohne Frühlingsfest: habt ein schönes Wochenende!
