This is from Taiwan, an island country in Asia which is famous for its delicacies. On the postcard are the big lanterns we made on Lantern Festival writing our wishes on them. The event is especially famous taking place in Ping Xi. Have you seen a Pixar animation called „Tangled“? Maybe the idea of „floating lights“ (lanterns) is derives from Taiwan’s lantern festival? The difference between them is that lanterns in Taiwan R much more bigger than those in the movie.

Es musste etwas geschehen. Schon lange ging es meiner Mitbewohnerin schon nicht mehr wirklich gut. Bis zum Boden reichte ihre Pracht, aber sie machte nicht mehr viel her. Viele, viele Jahre lebte sie so vor sich hin und machte mir Freude. Umso schlimmer war es mitanzusehen, wie sie sich quälte. Sie wurde immer depressiver. Ich musste unbedingt etwas unternehmen.

Also fuhr ich zum Gartencenter.

Something needed to be done. My roommate hadn’t been doing well for a while. Her curls reached all the way to the ground but it wasn’t all that impressive anymore. She’s lived by my side for many, many years and it was a pleasure to have her around. All the harder it was to see her suffer like that. She grew more and more depressed. I needed to take action.

So I went to the garden center.

Es tat mir fast leid, den Sack Erde, den ich nun schon als Zugluftstopper vor der Wohnungstür akzeptiert und schätzen gelernt hatte, anbrechen zu müssen. Der Küchenhammer kam auch wieder zum Einsatz. Am Anfang ging es noch nicht so flüssig…

I was almost sorry that I had to open the sack of potting soil that I had used (and come to appreciate) as a draft excluder in front of my apartment door. Again, the kitchen hammer was put to good use. It took some getting used to the task…

… aber das Endergebnis kann sich doch sehen lassen, oder?

… but the final result is certainly something to be proud of, isn’t it?

Seit ungefähr einem Jahr bin ich im Besitz des ersten Kochbuchs der Pioneer Woman und bin am heutigen Sonntag zum ersten Mal dazu gekommen, ein Rezept zu testen (das ich aber schon lange ins Auge gefasst hatte): die Cinnamon Rolls. Alle Rezepte sind immer eher für Großfamilien ausgelegt, also wurde es gedrittelt. Allen voran ist mir der perfekte Hefeteig gelungen. Aber seht selbst…

I’ve had the first cook book of the Pioneer Woman for about a year and just today I got around to trying the first recipe (that I’ve set my eyes on when I first browsed the book): Cinnamon Rolls. All the recipes are set up for large families so I made only a third. First of all, I made the perfect yeast dough. But see for yourselves…

Es hat ja was von schwedischen kanel bullar aber der Clou ist der Guss: aus Puderzucker, Butter, Ahornsirup und einem Schuss Kaffee. Gott sei Dank war ich mit den Gedanken dabei, als ich mir die beiden Endstücke separat noch in den Ofen geschoben habe… so konnte ich probieren, bevor der Besuch eintrudelt. Und ja, es stimmt: „Nun ist deine Küche der mit Abstand bestriechende Ort auf der Welt. Du könntest Eintrittskarten verkaufen.“

It’s similar to the Swedish kanel bullar but the clou is the icing: made from powdered sugar, butter, maple syrup (didn’t have maple flavoring) and a little coffee. Thank God I had my act together when I put the tailends in separate pans and into the oven… so I could try before the guests arrive. And yes, it’s right: „At this point, your kitchen is by far the best-smelling place on earth. You could sell tickets.“

Ich kann es kaum erwarten, die Variationen auszuprobieren… mit Orangenmarmelade statt Zimt und Orangensaft statt Kaffee und Ahornsirup. Ob da wohl ein Schuss Rum auch schmeckt? Schönen Sonntag wünscht

I can’t wait to try variations… with orange jam replacing cinnamon and sugar and orange juice instead of coffee and maple syrup. Maybe a little rum would go well, too? Have a nice Sunday!

Seit Ende 2009 habe ich ein (weiteres) Hobby: Postcrossing. Das wurde kürzlich durch einen Fernsehbeitrag ziemlich vielen Leuten bekannt. Da gibt es den Mitarbeiter bei der Radstation, der mir beim Abholen meines Drahtesels mitteilt, dass das total gut gewesen sei. Die 87-jährige aus einem anderen Stadtteil, die mich anrief und mir ihre über Jahrzehnte angewachsene Postkartensammlung vermachen möchte – damit ich Geld spare. Der unbekannte Rosenkavalier aus der Domstadt. Fanpost aus Berlin und anderswo. Die Friseurin, die mir auch sechs Wochen danach noch gratuliert.

At the end of 2009 I started a new hobby (yet another): postcrossing. That was made public recently by a TV report on it. There’s the employee at the bike station who told me that „this was really good last night on TV“ when I came to pick up my bike. The 87-year old from another neighborhood who called to let me know that she’d love to hand over her postcard collection to me – so that I could save some money on my expensive hobby. The anonymous romantic suitor from the cathedral city. Fanmail from Berlin and elsewhere. The hairdresser congratulating me on it even six weeks after the fact.

Unter anderem wurde ich auch gefragt, warum ich dieses Hobby betreibe: weil ich immer schon gerne Post bekommen habe, am liebsten handgeschrieben, weil Post aus exotischen Gegenden spannend ist, von überall her schöne Briefmarken und interessante Geschichten kommen etc. Weil ich mir eine Tasse Tee machen und mich gemütlich hinsetzen kann, um sie in aller Ruhe zu lesen. „Schöne Elche“ sind mir als Motiv dabei am liebsten – der Elch oben ist das Highlight… und kam bereits dreimal aus Finnland.

Among other things I was asked why I started this hobby: because I’ve always liked to receive mail, preferably hand-written, because mail from exotic places is exciting, because beautiful stamps and interesting stories come from all over the place etc. Because I can make a cup of tea and sit down in peace and quiet and read it. „Handsome mooses“ are my motif of choice – the moose above is the highlight… and has reached my mailbox three times already from Finland.

Manche Postcrosser weisen explizit darauf hin, dass sie keine handgemachten Postkarten erhalten möchten. Mir ging es da ganz anders, als ich diese handgestickte Postkarte aus Lettland bekam. Dass sich da jemand soviel Arbeit macht (überhaupt und dass dann auch ganz speziell für mich weihnachtlich gestaltet in der Hoffnung, dass es die erste Weihnachtskarte 2011 wird), um einer ihr vollkommen fremden Person eine Freude zu machen. Ich finde das unglaublich.

Some postcrossers mention explicitly that they do not appreciate receiving handmade postcards. I felt rather differently when I received this embroidered postcard from Latvia. That someone makes that effort (in general and then with this motif in particular, hoping to send me the first Christmas wishes of 2011) to make the day of a complete stranger. I find this incredible.

Wenn mir da nicht mal noch eine Weihnachtskarte nach Lettland entfleucht…

I wonder whether there won’t be a Christmas card finding its way to Latvia from my desk this year…
