Kurz vor Weihnachten hat mich dann noch endgültig der Stress eingeholt und es kam zu keinen Posts mehr, dafür zu Bluthochdruck. Und nun mal sehen, was die Tage vor dem Jahreswechsel noch an entspannenden Aktionen bereithalten. Diese Herren haben ja noch ein bisschen Weg vor sich…

Shortly before Christmas stress finally got me and there were no more posts and hypertension instead. Now let’s see what relaxing events these last days of the year have in store for me. These wise men have some distance to cover still…

Aus dem nieselregnenden Sturm kamen am Abend des 23. zwei Freunde zu uns, um eine Tüte zu überreichen. Ich nahm selbige freudig entgegen und bemerkte, dass ich sie bis Heiligabend unter den Baum stellen würde. Es folgte die Anmerkung, dass ich eines der beiden Teile weitergeben müsse (und ich verstand: an meinen Vater). Diese Anmerkung wurde nochmal wiederholt und ich verstand den Wink mit dem Zaunpfahl immer noch nicht. Erst im Laufe des Abends sickerte es durch, dass das irgendwas ganz besonderes sein musste und ich sah sofort nach:

On the evening of December 23 two friends came in out of the stormy drizzle to hand over a present. I happily accepted it and said I’d place it underneath the tree with the others until Christmas Eve. I was then told that I had to pass on one of two parts inside the bag (and I understood: to my Dad). This remark was repeated once and I still didn’t get the hint. Over the course of the evening it finally dawned on me that this was about something else and I checked immediately:

Es war dieser kleine Beutel und schon auf den ersten Blick war klar: gefüllt mit viel Geld. Schnell habe ich ihn aufgemacht und eine kleine Notiz lag darin:

Liebe Barbara, deine Spendenaktion [für das Hospiz] hat uns so beeindruckt, dass wir sie einfach übernommen haben. Hier ist das Ergebnis. Viele Grüße und alles Gute von der ganzen Frauengemeinschaft Barweiler.

It was this small bag and at first sight it was obvious: filled with a lot fo money. I opened it quickly and found a little note inside:

Dear Barbara, your fundraiser [for the hospice] so impressed us that we did it also. This is the result. Many greetings and all the best from the Women’s Association in Barweiler.

Es sind 202,50 Euro. Ob halb Barweiler nun auch Adventskränze in a box gebastelt hat oder die Spenden anders zusammenkamen, weiß ich nicht. Es haut mich auf jeden Fall von den Socken. Und es fiel mir ein, dass ich mein eigenes Endergebnis noch nicht bekannt gegeben habe: 82 Stück später habe ich letzte Woche 560 Euro überwiesen – und die Zusatzspende überweise ich noch heute Abend. VIELEN DANK!! Und mal sehen, was mir für nächstes Jahr einfällt.

The donation amounts to 202.50 Euros. I don’t know if half the village sat down to make Advent Wreaths in a box as well or the donations came in in a different way. Anyhow, it swept me clear off my feet. And reminded me that I haven’t published my own result yet: 82 boxes later I transferred 560 Euros – and this additional donation will go out right after publishing this. THANKS SO MUCH!! And I’ll start thinking about the 2013 fundraiser shortly.

Aus einigen (nicht öffentlichen) Kommentaren konnte ich erkennen, dass ich einen wichtigen Aspekt von Teddy’s Winter Wonderland unerwähnt gelassen habe. Das ist keine statische Ausstellung von Teddy und Co. – die sind ja sozusagen animiert. Zwar fehlt ob der fortgeschrittenen Uhrzeit des Besuchs die Weihnachtsmusik im kleinen Film, dafür hört man den Lärm vom Weihnachtsmarkt und hat freie Sicht:

I noticed that many of you might not have realized that Teddy’s Winter Wonderland is not just an exhibition of stuffed animals. They are animated, well, sort of. I was there rather late at night to make a little movie so there’s no Christmas music anymore but you get a clear view of the shop window and hear the noise from the nearby Christmas market:

Oh, ich habe den Eggnog in der Planung vergessen! Aber es ist ja noch früh genug… Nicht gerade ein traditioneller Bestandteil der Weihnachtsfeierlichkeiten in Deutschland im allgemeinen, aber seit 1995 in unserem Hause. Und Achtung: schön brav bleiben und nicht auf der Zielgeraden noch alles riskieren 😉

Oh, I completely forgot about the eggnog! But there’s still time… It’s not exactly a traditional „ingredient“ of German Christmas celebrations in general but it has been for us since 1995. And be careful: continue to be good and don’t risk anything NOW 😉

Gestern fand die alljährliche große Power-Backaktion statt, die wieder über 8 Stunden lief – und wir waren wirklich für so ziemlich alles ausgestattet, wie man oben sieht. Und weil auch wieder Biathlon-Rennen liefen, mussten wir teilweise improvisiert arbeiten…

We had our annual mega baking event again yesterday, Christmas cookies in the making for more than 8 hours – and we were ready for just about anything as you can tell from the picture above. But as there were biathlon races to follow as well, we worked under improvised circumstances some of the time…

Das Ergebnis (hier nur meine Produktion) lässt sich sehen: etwas anämisch wirkende Zimtsterne (es gab nur noch geschälte Mandeln – das passiert mir nie wieder), Lübecker Leckerli und Lebkuchenmonde… mir fehlen Dosen.

The result is quite huge (and here you can only see my part of it): slightly anemic looking cinnamon stars (got the wrong – peeled – almonds… need to pay more attention to this important detail), Lübeck Treats (Lübeck is a city in Germany and in this context suggests the use of marzipan…) and Gingerbread Moons… I need more tins.

Und damit einen guten Start in die letzte Adventwoche… das laufende Freebie nicht vergessen!

Schon einige Tage her – denn zwischenzeitlich fühlt sich das Wetter ja eher wie Frühling an – aber dann doch noch ein kurzer Blick auf die Waldlandschaften in den Blumenkästen. Weihnachten und Winter gleichzeitig… passiert nicht oft! Der davon inspirierte Schlaglochgarten war übrigens nach 2 Wochen komplett abgeräumt – ich war nochmal da. Dafür ist er in einem Video verewigt:

It’s been a few days already (in the meantime the weather feels more like spring) but this is a view of the woods in my flower boxes. Christmas and winter coincide… which hardly ever happens in real life! By the way: the pothole garden that was inspired by this was gone completely in its second week – I went to check. But here it will last forever:

Meine alte Liebe kommt natürlich auch wieder zum Einsatz… und immer wieder ist es eine Freude, sie aus der Kiste zu holen!

My old love is here again, too… and it’s always such a pleasure to take them out of the box!

Und schon in meinem ersten Eintrag dazu schrieb ich ja, dass mich „der lange Dünne“ an eine Figur aus der Serie Pfarrer Braun erinnere – ja, wer mag es wohl sein?

It was in my first entry on this group that I mentioned that the slim tall guy reminded me of a character in a TV show – so which one would it be?

Und natürlich spielten sie auch bei meinem diesjährigen Weihnachtskaffeeklatsch wieder zentrale Rolle.

And of course they played a central role at this year’s Christmas coffeeklatsch as well.

Im letzten Jahr war es die Elch-Rentier-Frage, in diesem Jahr muss ich mit der in Deutschland weit verbreiteten Meinung aufräumen, dass ein tomte ein schwedischer oder skandinavischer Weihnachtsmann ist. Das ist falsch. Sie sehen nur ein bisschen ähnlich aus.

Last year it was about the difference between moose and reindeers, this year I have to let you know that a tomte is not a Swedish or Scandinavian kind of Santa Claus. They just look sort of similar.

Diese wunderschönen Zeichnungen hat Harald Wiberg für das Buch Tomte Tummetott von Astrid Lindgren, das im Oetinger Verlag erschienen ist, gemacht. Und da wird es ein bisschen klarer: ein Tomte ist ein kleiner Wicht(el), oft mehrere hundert Jahre alt, der auf dem Bauernhof Menschen und Tiere beschützt… wenn man ihn gut behandelt.

These gorgeous drawings are by Harald Wiberg, made for Astrid Lindgren’s book Tomten. In this book, the role of a tomte becomes clear: he’s a little guy, often a few hundred years old, who lives on a farm and protects humans and animals… if he is treated well.

Dazu gehört, dass man ihm in der Weihnachtsnacht einen Teller Brei mit einer Butterflocke hinstellt – und wenn man das nicht macht, kann sich das übel auswirken. Dann spielt er Streiche, mehr oder weniger ernste, oder verlässt den Hof gleich komplett. Im Buch Das Geheimnis der Weihnachtswichtel von Sven Nordqvist wird aber auch erzählt, wie eine clevere Wichtelfrau schlimmes abwenden kann!

A very important thing to remember is to leave out a bowl with porridge with a pat of buter on top for him on Christmas Eve – if you forget that things can turn ugly. He can be mischievous or downright mean; sometimes he leaves the farm altogether. In his book Julgröten Sven Nordqvist casts a very clever tomte wife who knows how to avert tragedy in a case like this!
