Start auf dem Herriot Way! Wie konnte es dazu kommen? 1) Auf meiner Stippvisite in 2013 hat mich die Landschaft der Yorkshire Dales fasziniert. 2) Seit Kindheitstagen kenne und liebe ich die Serie „Der Doktor und das liebe Vieh“ – die in dieser Gegend spielt… und deren Hauptfigur der Tierarzt James Herriot ist. Der Herriot Way ist 84km lang und wird gemeinhin in 4 Etappen absolviert. Das Profil kann man also +/- nach jeden 20km abschneiden und hat eine Ahnung, wie sich der Tag gestalten wird.

First day on the Herriot Way! How did that happen? 1) When I first came to Yorkshire on a short stint last year I was intrigued by the landscape. 2) Ever since I was a child I have known and loved the TV series „All Creatures Great and Small“ which is set in this area… and whose main character is James Herriot, a vet. The Herriot Way is 52 miles / 84km long and is usually done in 4 stages. You can basically cut the profile below every 20km and get an idea what I was in for on any given day.

Der erste Tag war also ein vergleichsweise leichter Einstieg, an Flussläufen entlang und auf Wiesen… Wiesen… Wiesen. Start war in Aysgarth und Ziel war Hawes. Glücklicherweise hatte mich mein Gastwirt noch mit dem Buch Walking The Herriot Way ausgestattet. Es ist nämlich eine Sache, eine Karte zu haben und zu wissen, wo man ist und eine andere, dann dorthin zu kommen, wo man hin will: weil Straßen als Privatwege gesperrt sind o.ä.

So the first day was off to an easy start, along rivers and on fields… fields… fields. It started in Aysgarth and ended in Hawes. As luck would have it, my host in Aysgarth gave me a copy of Walking The Herriot Way to take along. It is one thing to have a map and know where you are and quite another to get to where you want to get to: because roads are private etc.

Er gab mir auch noch mit auf den Weg, dass ich auf dieser Etappe alle möglichen Zaunübertritte erleben würde – und ich habe mich gefreut. Bis mittags hielt das Gefühl an, aber spätestens beim Teilstück Sedbusk nach Hawes habe ich sie verflucht. Auf kürzester Strecke 11 Stück, manche so eng, dass man den Rucksack ausziehen musste… da waren sie mir schon nur noch lästig!

He also let me know that this would be the day of all sorts of stiles – and I was naively looking forward to it. I still liked them until about noon but latest when I had to climb ELEVEN on a really short distance between Sedbusk and Hawes (and many so narrow I had to take off my backpack) they had become a royal pain in the neck!

Zwischendrin begegnete mir auch ein aufgescheuchtes Reh – wahrscheinlich lag das dazugehörige Kitz irgendwo im hohen Gras?

In between stile 7 and 8 I think it was I encountered a scared deer – probably the fawn was still lying in the high grass?

Aber ansonsten war es hauptsächlich die Begleitung von Schafen – und Kaninchen. Ich habe an diesem ersten Tag gefühlte 1287 Stück gesehen. Auch diverse Leichen in unterschiedlichem Zustand der Verwesung, die mich wundern ließen, was auf diesen Schafswiesen abgeht. Denn wenn sie gerissen worden wären, wären sie ja gegessen und nicht verwesend rumliegend. Naja, es scheint, man macht sich die wildesten Gedanken, wenn man allein durch die Landschaft streicht! Jedenfalls dachte ich schon nach kurzer Zeit, ich hätte mir doch das Buch Know Your Sheep zulegen sollen, dass ich in irgendeinem Laden gesehen hatte.

But other than that I was mainly accompanied by sheep – and bunnies. I think I must have seen about 1287 bunnies on that first day. Also a number of bodies in varying stages of decay that made me wonder what was going on on these sheep pastures. Had a fox come and caught them, he would have eaten them and not let them lie to rot. Anyhow, you wonder about the weirdest things when you walk by yourself like that! After a short while, I realized I should have bought the book Know Your Sheep, that I had seen in some store.

Um die Mittagszeit hatte ich Askrigg erreicht, ein wichtiger Stop, denn dieser Ort mimte Darrowby in der Fernsehserie und das Skeldale House, in dem die Tierpraxis untergebracht war, steht heute noch und ist ein B&B. Nebendran habe ich mich perfekt getimed zum Lunch niedergelassen: der erste Regenschauer ging runter. Dort saßen auch Jennifer und Jim, die schon im Bus in Leyburn dabei gewesen waren und in gleicher Mission unterwegs waren. Aber die waren schon fertig und schmissen sich todesmutig in den Regen. Eine Irin und ein Schotte eben.

I reached Askrigg about noon, a very important stop for the fans as the little village is Darrowby in the TV series, the town where the surgery is located. Skeldale House still exists and now houses a B&B. I was on perfect timing that day: it started to rain the minute I sat down for lunch in the café next door. There I met Jennifer and Jim again who had already been on the bus from Leyburn and doing the same walk. But they had finished already and went out into the pouring rain. An Irish woman and a Scotsman, is all I can say.

Bis auf wenige Tropfen war ich dem Regen immer voraus – der Blick nach vorn war meist sonnig, der Blick zurück sehr düster. Teilweise donnerte es auch und das hat mich zugegebenermaßen etwas vorangetrieben, denn ich hatte keine Lust, im Gewitter auf irgendwelchen Wiesen rumzustehen.

It didn’t really rain that day – at least I was hardly affected. Looking ahead it was mostly sunny, the rain front came creeping up from behind but I beat it. As there was quite some rumbling at times I guess I did speed up some – I didn’t like the idea of being out in a thunderstorm out on an open field.

Bevor es nach Hawes ging, gab es noch einen kurzen Abstecher zum Hardraw Force… und die Wanderung schien sich zu einer Kevin Costner-Gedächtnis-Tour zu entwickeln, denn auch dieser Wasserfall erlangte im Robin Hood-Film Berühmtheit. Dort hat er das von Maid Marian hochgeschätzte Bad genommen.

Before I reached Hawes, there was a little detour to Hardraw Force… and it seemed as if this walk was turning into a commemorative Kevin Costner tour: this waterfall is of Robin Hood fame as well. It’s where he took the bath, so much appreciated by Maid Marian.

In Hawes habe ich das B&B problemlos gefunden und der Koffer war von Sherpa Van verlässlich geliefert worden. Also: alles bestens! Zum Abschluss noch ein wenig grün… bis morgen!

I had no trouble finding the B&B in Hawes and the suitcase had been delivered as scheduled by Sherpa Van. All well! Some more greens for you to admire… see you soon!
