Auch der zweite Tag war eine ruhige Nummer, ganz wie ich mir diesen Urlaub vorstelle. Am Morgen brachte er uns nach Haworth. Der Ort wurde gewählt, da hier die zweite Etappe der Tour de France mit einem fiesen Anstieg durchkommen würde – wir aber aufgrund der sehr eingeschränkten Zugänglichkeit (und meiner dieser Tage besonders ausgeprägten Abneigung, früh aufzustehen) nicht sicher sind, ob wir noch Platz am Anstieg finden. Und deswegen gucken wir es uns „mal so“ an, besonders auch die zweite Hälfte des Anstiegs, die auf Pflaster laufen wird.

The second day was a quiet one, too – just as I have hoped this whole vacation would turn out to be. In the morning we went to Haworth. We had chosen this town because the second stage of the Tour de France will come through here and the riders will face a nasty steep hill – but due to limited accessibility (and my these days particularly pronounced aversion to getting up early) we aren’t sure whether we can get there in time to stand at the hill. So we went there to check it out ahead of time, especially the second part, which is a cobblestone road.

Was soll ich sagen: warum sollte man einen besonderen Grund brauchen, Haworth zu besuchen? Mir hätte schon der Blick die Gasse runter gereicht. Oder die künstlerisch wertvoll platzierten Katzen und wunderschönen Blumenarrangements.

What should I say: why would anyone need a special reason to visit Haworth? Just the view down that street would have sufficed. Or the cats placing themselves along a color code and the fantastic flower arrangements.

Natürlich gab es auch hier wieder viel Deko für das große Event – und ein tolles Café (Blick aus dem Café unten links), dessen Namen ich zwar vergessen habe, aber wo es neben dem Café-Betrieb auch getöpferte Produkte zu erstehen gibt (in denen auch serviert wird). Wenn ich noch ein bisschen nachdenke, fällt mir der Name sicher auch wieder ein…

Of course there was also a lot of creative decorations to look at for the great event – and a great café (view from the café on the lower left) whose name I have forgotten but where you could also buy hand-made pottery. I’m pretty sure I’ll remember the name at some point…

Richtig gelungen fand ich die Art, wie sie die Tour de France an einer Praxis für Physiotherapie willkommen hießen… mit einer direkten Einladung an Marc Cavendish, sich bzw. seinen müden Beinen eine Massage zu gönnen. Und das auch noch auf Französisch.

I really liked the way how a place for physiotherapy welcomed the Tour de France… with an invitation addressed to Marc Cavendish, to come in and treat himself or his tired legs to a massage. And it was even presented in French.

Von Haworth ging es noch nach Skipton. Nicht wirklich überraschend kommt auch hier die Tour de France durch. Neben den zwischenzeitlich fast schon normalen Deko-Ideen…

From Haworth we moved on to Skipton. Somehow it wasn’t surprising to learn that the Tour de France would come through here as well. In addition to the by now almost “normal” ideas when it comes to decorations…

… hat mich hier die Deko an der Kirche umgehauen. Man beachte auch das Detail auf dem Shirt. Rechts an der Kirche vorbei geht es direkt zum Skipton Castle, dem wir noch einen hochinteressanten Besuch abgestattet haben. Von außen macht es vor dem Tor nicht viel her, man ahnt ja nicht, was dahinter alles kommt. Aber drinnen findet man eine sehr gut erhaltene mittelalterliche Burg, wo man sich in ca. 20 Räumen einen guten Eindruck von Architektur und Lebensumständen machen kann.

… the decorations on the church blew my mind. Have a look also at the detail of the shirt. Passing the church on its right we went to see Skipton Castle which we paid a visit that turned out to be highly interesting. It doesn’t look like much when you are in front of the main gate as there’s not much to see of what awaits you once you’ve entered. But inside you find a very well preserved medieval castle where you can get a great idea of what life was like at the time and also of changes in the architecture – while walking through about 20 different rooms.

Die Tatsache, dass die Burg noch so gut erhalten ist, ist Lady Anne Clifford zu verdanken, die das Gebäude nach schweren Schäden im Bürgerkrieg, inkl. 3 Jahre Belagerung, wieder auf Vordermann bringen ließ. 1659 wurde der beendete Wiederaufbau u.a. mit der von ihr höchstselbst eingepflanzten Eibe im Innenhof gefeiert. Das war also Tag 2 – bis bald!

It is thanks to Lady Anne Clifford that the castle is in such a good shape today. After the Civil War and the damages that brought with it (incl. a three-year siege), she had it repaired and somewhat modernized. The works were completed in 1659 and celebrated with, among other things, I presume, the planting of the yew tree in the courtyard which she actually did herself. So that was day 2 – take care!
