Was für ein Fehler!!!! Wir haben nur anderthalb Tage für York eingeplant – besch…eidene Vorbereitung. Und das auch nur per Zufall. Nach dem Wandern noch ein bisschen an die Küste? Och ja, wär doch schön? Noch einen Zwischenstopp einlegen? York liegt auf dem Weg… Nichts, aber auch gar nichts hat mich auf diese Wahnsinnsstadt vorbereitet.

What a mistake!!! We had only planned a day and a half for York – really… And we basically only came by chance. Let’s go to the coast for a bit after the Herriot Way! Yeah, good idea. Maybe with a stopover? What’s on the way? York? Let’s do York then! Nothing, absolutely nothing had prepared me for this fantastic city.

Allein mit der gut erhaltenen mittelalterlichen Stadtmauer, die in einem Bereich auf römischen Fundamenten sitzt, hätte ich einen halben Tag verbringen können. Über drei Kilometer stehen noch und die kann man in aller Ruhe ablaufen, dabei die noch erhaltenen Tore durchschreiten und auf einer der hier und da aufgestellten Bänke eine Pause einlegen. Wenn man nicht ganz im Hier und Jetzt bleibt, glaubt man plötzlich, ganz klar einen Wachtposten an einer Mauer lehnen zu sehen, mit Pfeil und Bogen, die volle Nummer. Und man kriegt besondere Einblicke in Hinterhöfe und Gärten.

I could easily have spent a whole morning walking the medieval city wall that’s still there for the most part. More than 3km still exist and you can have a nice stroll on roof level – walking through the medieval gates as well and taking breaks on one of the benches that are set up here and there. And if you don’t make sure to stay here and now it can easily happen that you very clearly see a guard leaning against the wall, bow and arrow, the whole shebang. And you get really unusual insights into yards and gardens.

Und dann natürlich York Minster, die große Kathedrale. Die überragt alles… und ich habe sie mir auch angesehen… aber ich konnte mich nicht ordentlich darauf konzentrieren, weil ich die ganze Zeit das Gefühl hatte, in der Stadt was zu verpassen. Und dabei habe ich das Thema Wikinger in York noch ganz außen vorgelassen.

Then of course York Minster, the huge cathedral. It rises above everything else… and I did go inside to have a look at it… but I couldn’t really concentrate on it because I felt I was missing out on something outside. And I didn’t even as much as scratch the surface of the subject of the vikings in York.

Aber oha, es kam ja alles noch „schlimmer.“ Denn der Zufall wollte es desweiteren so, dass in diesem Jahr die nur einmal alle vier Jahre stattfindenden Mystery Plays (die im Deutschen wohl tatsächlich Mysterienspiel heißen) aufgeführt wurden. Genau an diesem Wochenende. Es ist eine Tradition aus dem Mittelalter, die immer mal wieder eingeschlafen war und in ihrer jetzigen Form seit 1998 wieder aufgeführt wird. Diese Schauspielertruppen ziehen auf bzw. mit Wagen durch die Stadt und halten viermal an, um jeweils viermal ihr Stück aufzuführen. Insgesamt waren es 12 Stück, 600 Schauspieler daran beteiligt. Ich hatte keine Ahnung, was mich erwartet (DAS ist offenbar das große Thema mit mir und York – kein Plan!)

But everything became even „worse.“ As chance also had it, I had chosen the very weekend of the Mystery Plays being staged. That happens once in four years. It’s a medieval tradition that stopped a few times along the way and has been revived in its current form in 1998. Groups of actors take to the city, pulling and pushing their stages with them on wagons. They stop in four different places and present their play. There was a total of 12 plays involving 600 actors. I had no idea what to expect (and apparently, THAT is the underlying theme of York and me – no clue!).

Der Tradition entsprechend ist es ein Event, das man kostenlos verfolgen kann. Man stellt sich einfach an eine der vorher bekannten Stellen im Ort, wo es zu einer Aufführung kommen wird und fertig. Oder man macht es sich richtig gemütlich, Picknickdecke und alles – dauert schließlich auch den ganzen Nachmittag. Man kann aber auch für 15 GBP ein Ticket für einen überdachten Sitz buchen (Preis für die erste Hälfte – für die zweite muss ein weiteres gebucht werden)… und rein fototechnisch war das eine gute Idee. Und als zwei Stunden vor Start kurzfristig die Welt unterging und ich mich tragischerweise ungeplant in ein Teehaus zu Scones und Clotted Cream flüchten musste, schien es ein doppelt guter Entschluss.

According to tradition it’s a free event. You just wait at one of the locations where it’s supposed to take place and that’s it. Or you bring a picknick – after all it does take all afternoon. You can also purchase a ticket at 15 GBP per part (there are two parts) to get access to covered seating. I did that and it was a good choice regarding the perspective for the camera and when there were heavy rains about two hours before it started and tragically I needed to flee to a tea room and have a scone with clotted cream, it seemed even a wise decision.

Nicht nur rein fototechnisch – auch was die Special Effects anging. Ich hatte mir die Tribüne im Dean’s Park ausgesucht, direkt neben dem Minster… nur wenige Schritte von dem Cupcakes verkaufenden rosa Wohnwagen entfernt. In dem Moment, in dem Eva in den Apfel biss, schlug eine Glocke mit extrem dunklen Ton die halbe Stunde…

But not only with regard to the pictures – also what concerns special effects. I had chosen the stand in Dean’s Park, right next to the Minster… only a few steps away from that pink caravan on the pictures above, selling cupcakes. The very moment that Eva takes the first bite from the apple, a really dark bell did the toll on the half hour…

Nach diesen wenigen Aufführungen hätte ich mich schon verwünschen können, nur für die erste Hälfte ein Ticket gekauft zu haben. Aber ich dachte, ich muss mir noch soviel anderes ansehen. Ha! Als hätte ich dafür noch die Muße gehabt…

After these few plays already I could have cursed myself for only buying a ticket for the first half. My thinking was that there was so much else to discover. Ha! As if I’d still been in the mood for that…

Es waren auch modernere Interpretationen dabei, wie die des Kindermords in Bethlehem oben – projiziert auf eine x-beliebige Diktatur. Oder auch die direkte Einbeziehung des Publikums:

Neben der Regie und den schauspielerischen Leistungen haben auch Bühnenbild und Kostüme oft fasziniert:

Und kann mir bitte einer sagen, an wen mich dieser etwas arrogant angehauchte französische Jesus erinnert (mit dem Strohhut und dem orangen Halstuch)?

So… wer am kommenden Sonntag (20.7.14) noch nichts vorhat und in der Nähe ist… oder spontan in der Nähe sein könnte: die Mystery Plays werden noch einmal aufgeführt. Alle Infos inkl. der Möglichkeit, Tickets zu kaufen (NUR online möglich), gibt es hier. Sonst dann wohl 2018 wieder… aber das wird wieder ein WM-Jahr sein und ich muss sagen: es hat mir das Herz geblutet, für dieses Spiel – und das Ergebnis – nicht in Deutschland gewesen zu sein. Doch nun: auf zur Küste!
