Irgendwie gefällt mir dieser Hüftenschuss-Header mit den japanischen Marinesoldaten und der Freiheitsstatue im Hintergrund. Hier in New York ist Fleet Week, zu der Marine aus aller Welt angereist ist für Paraden – und dann auch für Landgänge. Die Stadt ist voller Menschen in entsprechenden Uniformen, die sich auf den touristischen Pfaden bewegen.

Somehow I like this header showing the Japanese navy soldiers and the Statue of Liberty in the background. It’s Fleet Week in NYC and navy from all over the world has come to visit and participate in parades – and then get to go on land as well. The city is full of people in respective uniforms who tread the touristy paths.

Auch wenn das obere Foto erstens das letzte des Tages war und außerdem wettermäßig böses ahnen ließ, war der erste Exkursionstag von der Sonne verwöhnt, aber es war auch unglaublich schwül. Meine Sonnencreme habe ich in Boston vergessen und war nicht bereit, hier 14 USD für eine Tube zu bezahlen. Das Rauchen kann einem bei 13 USD pro Päckchen auch vergehen, nehme ich an. Wie auch immer, wir waren in Downtown und auf Ellis Island unterwegs, gehen Manhattan von der Südspitze aus an und arbeiten uns langsam nordwärts – entlang der Entwicklungsachsen der Stadt.

Even thought this first picture is misleading insofar it as it was the last one that I took and also because it looks like the weather was less than optimal, that first day of the field trip was basked in sunshine but it was also very muggy. I forgot my sunscreen lotion in Boston and was not willing to pay 14 USD for a substitute. And I guess you definitely consider to quit smoking at 13 USD per pack. Anyway, we were discovering Downtown and Ellis Island, tackling Manhattan from its Southernmost tip and make our way to the north – basically following the axes of development of the city.

Am Bowling Green, einer kleinen Parkanlage vor dem ehemaligen Custom House und heutigen Museum of the American Indian, wurde uns neben einigen geschichtlichen Eckdaten ab der ersten Entdeckung durch Verazano 1524 vermittelt, dass ein Teil Manhattans aufgeschüttet wurde, was die Frage aufbrachte, wie dann solche riesigen Wolkenkratzer auf so scheinbar nicht wirklich festem Untergrund stehen können. Jedoch keine Sorge: bald darunter finden sich Granite und Gneise, auf denen sich sicher stehen lässt.

Close to Bowling Green, a little park in front of the former Customs House which today houses the Museum of the American Indian, we got som einformation about the early days of the city, starting right from when Verazano first set eyes on the area in 1524. It was interesting to hear that this part used to be the Southernmost tip of the island until landfills expanded the acreage. And soon the question arose how skyscrapers of the size we were seeing could stand firmly on ground like this. We were assured that we needn’t worry one bit as there was reliable bedrock of granites and gneiss not too far beneath.

Nachdem Manhattan der ansässigen indianischen Bevölkerung 1626 von dem aus Wesel stammenden Peter Minuit für einigen Glasperlentand geringen Werts abgekauft wurde, konnte es dann losgehen mit dem Wachstum der Stadt. Um uns einen Eindruck über verschiedene Aspekte der Einwanderung (Herkunft, Zeiträume, Abläufe etc.) zu machen, brachen wir dann nach Ellis Island auf, wo bis 1954 alle Einwanderer durchgeschleust wurden.

In 1626 German-born Peter Minuit made a deal with the local Indian population, buying Manhattan from them for a bunch of glass pearls and other such precious things and the growth of the city took off for good. In order to get an idea about different aspects of the immigration (origin, time periods, procedures etc.) we went to Ellis Island which was where all immigrants passed through right until 1954.

Wichtige Entdeckung: der Baum der eingewanderten Worte wurde erneuert. Den hatte ich schon 1995 gesehen und mir war besonders das Wort „coffeeklatsch“ aufgefallen. Das war nicht mehr dabei. Dafür weiß ich erfreulicherweise nun, dass „moose“ (Elch) ein Algonquin Wort ist. Aber kann mir jemand sagen, von welchem deutschen Wort sich „bum“ ableiten soll?

Important discovery: the tree of immigrated words was renewed. I had already had a look at it in 1995 and at the time especially liked the word „coffeeklatsch“. It wasn’t there anymore. But now I’m happy to know that „moose“ is an Algonquin Indian word.

Zurück in Manhattan ging es weiter entlang der Promenade an der Battery Park City, die auf dem Gebiet ehemaliger Docklands als sog. Waterfront Development gebaut wurde. Durch den Palmengarten in die Tiefen des verwaist wirkenden World Financial Center gelangt, bekamen wir einen guten Ausblick auf Ground Zero, wo der neue WTC 1 Tower schon Richtfest hatte und auch das Memorial mit den zwei Wasserpools bereits besteht (in den Fundamenten der ehemaligen WTC 1 und 2 Türme sozusagen). Das haben wir uns nicht aus der Nähe angesehen – wegen des Memorial Day Weekends war alles viel zu überlaufen. Evtl. mache ich das im Laufe der Woche noch, an einem der freien Nachmittage.

After our return to Manhattan we followed the waterfront along Battery Park City to the World Financial Center. This is where the docklands used to be and, as one of the participants mused, where the Titanic was supposed to land. We were led past the palmtree garden of the World Financial Center into the deserted depths of it and got a great view of Ground Zero. The new WTC 1 Tower has already undergone a roofing ceremony of sorts. The memorial mainly consits of two pools where the former WTC 1 and 2 towers used to stand. We decided against a close-up visit as it was extremely crowded due to the Memorial Day Weekend. I might do it during the course of the week on one of our free afternoons.

Von dort aus weiter lernten wir erstmal was über die zoning laws, die entstanden, nachdem das Equitable Building (siehe unten) 1915 fertiggestellt wurde. Unter anderem wurde dadurch festgelegt, dass hohe Gebäude nicht in der gesamten Höhe quasi direkt am Bürgersteig gebaut werden dürfen, sondern quasi einen umgekehrten „Stufenschnitt“ zu bekommen haben, auch wedding cake style genannt. Sie werden also durch das Zurücksetzen oberer Stockwerke nach oben hin immer schmaler, so dass sie nicht so ganz erdrückend wirken und außerdem deutlich mehr Licht die Straße erreicht.

Moving on from there we learned a bit about zoning laws that were put into place after the construction of the Equitable Building in 1915 (see picture below). Among other things it was decided that buildings of a certain height were to withdraw progressively so as to allow more sun light to reach the streets (aka wedding cake architecture).

Entlang der Wall Street, deren Name tatsächlich auf den ehemals dort verlaufenden Schutzwall zwischen dem jungen New York und dem feindlichen Umland zurückgeht, ging es vorbei an der New Yorker Börse. Direkt gegenüber steht die 1842 fertiggestellte Federal Hall, wo George Washington seinen Amtseid ablegte. Noch heute steht er auf den Stufen davor…

We proceeded along Wall Street, which was in fact where a wall once protected New York from its surroundings, to the New York Stock Exchange. It’s located right across from the Federal Hall (completed in 1842), Where George Washington once took the oath of office. And he’s still standing guard on the stairs leading up to it…

Und nach diesem aktiven Tag ging es uns im Park vor dem Woolworth Building ungefähr so, wie diesen beiden Damen… Ich freue mich schon auf die nächste Runde!

After this positively active day I felt like joining these two young ladies in the park in front of the Woolworth Building, where that first day ended… Am looking forward to the next one!
