Der 95. Geburtstag / The 95th birthday

„Basteln“ war immer schon wichtig, um mich in Balance zu halten. Und ich komme in diesem Jahr viel, viel, viel zu wenig dazu. Umso besser, dass ich einige Aufträge erhalten habe und mich dann auch hinsetze, und über diese Dinge nachdenke und so die Gedanken mal ab des täglichen Wahnsinns, der dabei ist, mich zu verschlucken, schweifen lasse. So auch für diese Karte, für eine 95-jährige Jubilantin, die sich darüber beschwert hat, dass Geburtstagskarten alle gleich aussehen und die Orchideen liebt.

My creative hobbies have always been important to keep me balanced. And this year has been a great challenge because I really don’t get to it only a fraction as much as I would like (or NEED) to. So I really liked to get a few orders for particular things because that makes me sit down and let my thoughts wander to things other than the daily madness that has been threatening to engulf me. One of them was this card for the 95th birthday of a lady who had complained about birthday cards all being alike and who loves orchids.

Ich habe noch nicht gehört, ob sie ihr gefallen hat… aber ich dachte so bei mir, dass sie vielleicht nicht nur Orchideenliebhabern eine Freude machen würde. Genießt den Sonntag – ich freue mich schon auf den Tatort – nicht nur in Ermangelung der Möglichkeit, live bei der ersten Folge der fünften Staffel Downton Abbey dabei sein zu können (vor ein paar Tagen habe ich kurz überlegt, spontan ins weiterhin Vereinigte Königreich überzusiedeln)…

I haven’t heard yet whether she liked it… but I was thinking to myself that it might not only please an orchid lover. Enjoy your Sunday – I’m already very much looking forward to tonight’s episode of Tatort… and not only for want of access to Downton Abbey 5/1 (I had briefly considered a spontaneous relocation to the still United Kingdom a few days ago)…

Rosen / Roses

2014 war bislang kein gutes Jahr für mein kreatives Hobby. Zu selten war Zeit bzw. Ruhe dafür. Aber nun kamen zwei Dinge zusammen: der Auftrag, eine Geburtstagskarte für eine bald 95-jährige zu machen und die laufende Challenge bei City Crafter, auf die ich bei Ros aufmerksam wurde. Es heißt: mache ein Projekt, auf dem wenigstens eine Rose zu sehen ist. Mit zweien habe ich mich ja fast selbst übertroffen 😉

2014 has not been a good year for crafting so far. Only rarely did I have time or the inclination to be creative. But now the constellation was favorable: I was asked to make a birthday card for a soon-to-be 95-year old and there is the current challenge over at City Crafter which I came across on Ros‘ blog and which asks for at least one rose to be used on your project. So I basically outdid myself using two 😉

Sie gefällt mir schon ganz gut, aber in der Summe bin ich glaube ich noch auf der Suche nach der perfekten Karte… Wie auch immer, schaut euch mal um bei City Crafter – die Karten des Design Teams sind alle herausragend.

Sprachlos / Speechless

Vor gut einer Woche hatte ich ja unsere Benefizaktion zugunsten der Familie eines bosnischen Kollegen angekündigt (siehe Flutkatastrophe) – die hat letzten Montag stattgefunden und nun komme ich endlich dazu, kurz zu berichten.

A little more than a week or so ago I posted about the upcoming fundraiser for our Bosnian colleague’s family who lost just about everything during the recent floods. It took place last Monday and finally I find a minute to let you know how it turned out.

Man hat ja im Vorfeld so eine Vorstellung, was man da gerne erreichen würde – aber nichts hat uns auf das Ergebnis vorbereitet.

I guess anybody who does something like that has some sort of idea what they want to come of it in the end – but nothing could have prepared us for this result.

Eine Sammeldose stand schon wenige Tage nach der ersten Berichterstattung an der Rezeption bereit. Schon vor dem Basar rief mich ein Kollege an und sagte, ich müsste die mal leeren, denn die Leute hätten Schwierigkeiten da noch Geld unterzubringen. Aber dann kamen noch Kuchenesser…

We had put up a sealed tin a few days after the flood already at the reception desk. A few days before our Triple B event a colleague called to let me know we should empty the tin as people had trouble getting any more bills in. And then came those with a sweet tooth…

… oder die ganz ausgefallene Teelichthalter gekauft haben (da war ich auch dabei und er ist fantastisch!).

Okay… direkt nach dem Basar kamen wir auf sage und schreibe 2.875 Euro. Dann setzte eine erneute Motivationswelle ein, da wir die 3.000 Euro-Marke noch knacken wollten. Mein letzter Stand war sowas wie 3.150 Euro… und irgendwie kommt immer noch was nach. VIELEN DANK!!!

Okay… right after the event we counted an amazing 2,875 Euros. Then we were really motivated to break the 3,000 Euro-threshold and published that inhouse. The last amount I know of was something like 3,150 Euros… and somehow it just keeps coming. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!

Über die letzten Wochen (Monate?) mag hier der Eindruck entstanden sein, als hätte ich dem kreativen Dasein endgültig den Rücken gekehrt. Und es stimmt: ich bin zu fast nichts gekommen. Aber das bisschen freie Zeit, was übrig war, habe ich seit ungefähr einem Monat bastelnd verbracht.

During the course of the past weeks (months?) you might have gotten the impression that I had altogether stopped being my creative self. And it’s right: these are incredibly busy times and I made next to nothing. But the little free time I had this past month or so I did spend in my – extended – creative nook.

Das hat folgenden Hintergrund. Wir haben einen bosnischen Kollgen, den ich schon recht lange, ursprünglich aus Kongo-Zeiten, kenne. Die Familie seiner Frau hat bei der Flutkatastrophe in Bosnien so ziemlich alles verloren (Haus ein Fall für Kernsanierung). Als dann eine andere Kollegin vorschlug, wir sollten eine Art Benefizbasar veranstalten, war ich gleich Feuer und Flamme.

And this is why: we have a colleague from Bosnia who I have known back from Congo times. His wife’s family has lost basically all their belongings (substantial refurbishment of the house needed, too) in the floods in Bosnia last month. And when a colleague suggested we do some sort of fundraiser, I joined in.

Er wird am kommenden Montag, 23. Juni 2014 ab 11 Uhr im Foyer bei und stattfinden. Und wenn ihr – bei geografischer Nähe – Zeit und Gelegenheit habt, vorbeizukommen und uns um möglichst viele Dinge zu erleichtern, würden wir uns sehr freuen. Es gibt auch einen Kuchen/Salat-Teil. Das Triple B kommt nämlich von Bosnien-Buffet-Basar.

It will start at 11 am this coming Monday, June 23, 2014 in the reception area of our office. Should you live somewhere nearby and have time to drop by and help empty the tables, we’d love to see you! Cakes and salads will also be on offer as that is what triple B relates to: Bosnia-Buffet-Bazaar.

Was ihr jetzt hier seht, ist ein Teil meiner Beiträge – wir haben außerdem soviele wunderbare Dinge zur Verfügung gestellt bekommen, alles selbst gemacht: Mützen, Marmeladen, Schmuck unterschiedlichster Art, Seifen, Chutneys, eingelegte Zwiebeln französischer Art, Fleurogami, Klemmentinis, Lesezeichen(-monster) und was weiß ich.

What you see here are some of my products – but we got so many different wonderful additions to our bazaar and all handmade: hats, jams, all kinds of jewellery, soaps, chutneys, pickled onions (French style), fleurogami – if that is a word in English, (monster) bookmarks and whatnot.

Und dann gäbe es ja immer noch die Möglichkeit, einfach nur Geld zu spenden… kann man vor Ort oder indem man mich kontaktiert und zu anderen Wegen Auskunft erhält.

Blockade gelöst / Crafter’s Block Lifted

Die Jingle Belles haben es geschafft! Meine Weihnachtskartenblockade ist gebrochen – und das Wochenende hat ja eigentlich gerade erst angefangen!! Es geht bei dieser Challenge darum, mindestens drei Schichten zu schaffen. Jetzt habe ich es mir mit dem Motiv einfach gemacht (das hat ja selbst schon vier Schichten)… aber ich bin einfach nur froh, dass es langsam wieder anfängt zu fluppen.

The Jingle Belles‘ All Bundled Up challenge did it! My crafter’s block was lifted – and the weekend has only just started!! Anyway, this challenge is about making a card with at least three layers. Well, I took a very easy way with my image which in itself already has four layers… but I’m just relieved that I finally seem to be getting my mojo back.

Der 90. Geburtstag / The 90th birthday

Wie einige von euch vielleicht erleichtert festgestellt bemerkt haben, leide ich an einem ziemlich schweren Fall einer Bastelblockade. Aber letztes Wochenende musste sie um jeden Preis überwunden werden: der 90. Geburtstag meines Grundschullehrers stand an. Und ja, wie das mit mir so ist: wir sind auch fast 30 Jahre nach Verlassen der Grundschule noch in Kontakt. Nicht oft, aber immer wieder.

Some of you might have been relieved to noticed that I’ve been suffering from a severe case of crafter’s block for quite a while now. But last weekend it just had to be overcome: my class teacher from primary school was 90 years old on Tuesday. Yes, that’s what happens when you get in touch with me… even almost 30 years after I moved on to high school we’re still corresponding. Not very frequently but every now and then.

Lange bevor Kinder bereits in der Grundschule anfingen, Fremdsprachen zu lernen, war das bei uns ein fester Bestandteil. Auch wenn es bei uns nicht um Kinderlieder ging, sondern darin bestand, das Vaterunser auf Englisch zu lernen. Ich kann es heute noch… den Zauberlehrling habe ich lange vergessen. Man kann wohl sagen, er war ein Lehrer alter Schule.

Long before it became customary for children to learn foreign languages in primary school already, it was well established with us. Even though our curriculum wasn’t about nursery rhymes but the Lord’s Prayer. I still know it by heart today… but have long since forgotten Goethe’s The Sorcerer’s Apprentice. Well, I guess it’s safe to say that he was and still is old school.

Er hat immer viel von Reisen in aller Welt erzählt, so dass mir die Karte als Hintergund passend erschien. Ich hoffe, er hatte einen schönen Tag. Und auch, dass diese Karte der Auftakt zu deutlich mehr Aktivität in meiner Bastelecke war!

He always had a story to tell about foreign countries so I decided that this map in the background was fitting. I hope he had a great day. And I also hope that this card was the prelude to highly increased activity in my creative nook!

Save the Frogs Day

Gestern war ein Tag, der ein ganz wunderbares Ende gefunden hat. Das Wetter war fantastisch und da der Botanische Garten nun ja auch wieder bis 18 Uhr geöffnet ist, war es der ideale Tag für einen Besuch. Mit einem Eis (Holunder!). Und wahrscheinlich eine der letzten Chancen, meine geliebten Rhododendren zu bewundern.

Yesterday was a day that turned out to have a happy ending. The weather was gorgeous and now that the Botanical Gardens are open until 6pm again I jumped at the opportunity. Ice-cream included (elderberry!). And it was probably about the last chance to have a look at „my“ rhodies.

Auch wenn die Blüten ja eigentlich jedes Jahr gleich aussehen, kann ich euch doch einige Nahaufnahmen nicht ersparen. Die Farben!

… die anderen guckten aus dem Wasser und waren auch schon vor Sonnenuntergang in intensive Konzerte vertieft. Und weil heute tatsächlich Save the Frogs Day ist, habe ich dazu auch eine Collage!

… while the others came to the surface to give their concerts, even before the sun went down. And because today really is Save the Frogs Day, I decided to make a whole collage of them!

Am kleinen Teich war ich schon fast im „nimm die Hände da raus, das ist kein Spielplatz“-Modus, aber der etwa 8-jährige hatte mich schnell in seinen Bann gezogen, indem er mir die Welt der Molche erklärt hat und der Wasserschnecken und Frösche sowieso. Und den Spruch „Gucken ja, fangen nein“ brachte dann die ansonsten freundliche Dame der Gartenaufsicht auf dem Fahrrad…

At the small pond I had almost reached the „get your hands out of there, this is not a playground“ mode but the about 8-year old in question had soon won me over explaining the adventurous world of newts and aquatic snails and frogs of course. The friendly lady ranger on her bike then did the „Looking yes, catching no“ routine when she came by…

Aber die schönen Erlebnisse waren ja noch nicht vorbei, denn einmal zuhause angekommen fand ich in meinem Briefkasten einen dicken Umschlag „Happy Mail“. Das Glückslos bei Ros war auf mich gefallen und ich habe dringend notwendige 😉 Bastelutensilien bekommen, zusammen mit einer wunderschönen selbst gemachten Karte. DANKE!

But this day had another surprise in store for me. When I got home I found a thick padded envelope in my mailbox, happy mail. I was the lucky winner of Ros‘ birthday celebrations for CCCB and I so I received urgently needed 😉 crafts supplies, accompanied by a wonderful handmade card. THANKS!

Vom Neandertaler zur Badminton-Bundesliga / From Neandertals to Premier League Badminton

Was für eine Woche… viele wunderbare „Events“ – aber die Frequenz hat mich fertig gemacht. Nach Badminton und einem „internationalen Abend“ am Dienstag und caveMittwoch ging es Donnerstag mit den Kollegen nach Köln, wo wir uns nach dem Genuss von Tapas in der warmen Frühlingssonne CAVEMAN angesehen haben. Da wurde ordentlich gelacht!

What a week…lots of wonderful events but their frequency really did me in. There was the weekly badminton on Tuesday and then the monthly „international evening“ on Wednesday. Thursday brought me to Cologne, having yummy tapas in the spring sunshine and later enjoying CAVEMAN with colleagues. Hilarious!

Freitag ging es erneut nach Köln, zur lit.Cologne. Das ist seit… vielleicht 10 Jahren eine liebgewonnene Tradition mit einer guten Freundin. Dieses Jahr hatten wir uns Julia Franck und Heide Schwochow ausgesucht, „Vom Buch zum Film.“ Beim Buch handelt es sich um Lagerfeuer, beim Film um Westen, der hier gerade in den Kinos läuft. Das Gespräch war zum allerersten Mal kein schönes Erlebnis. Ein farb- und ideenloser Moderator, dazu eine Autorin, die hauptsächlich sich zu produzieren wollen schien. Einfach mal einen normalen deutschen Satz zu sagen und eine Frage direkt zu beantworten, war nicht ihr Ding. Dafür saß die Frisur. Aber der Abend nahm dennoch einen erfreulichen Verlauf, denn der Film Westen ist ein absoluter Knaller, über eine Witwe mit Sohn, die aus der DDR flieht und ihre Erlebnisse im Auffanglager. Absolute Empfehlung und alle Daumen hoch.

Friday saw me in Cologne again, at lit.Cologne. That’s been a tradition of a good friend and myself for… maybe 10 years. This year we chose to see Julia Franck (book author) and Heide Schwochow (screen writer), „From Book to Movie.“ The book is Campfire, the movie is called West and is currently shown in German movie theaters. The discussion at the beginning was the first one I did not enjoy. An uninspired host and an author who mainly wanted to present herself. It was unlike her to speak a normal German sentence and give a direct answer to a question. But her hair was gorgeous. Fortunately, the evening did turn out a success in the end because the movie was fantastic. It’s set in 1978 and about a widow and her son who flee the GDR to West Berlin and their experiences at the reception center. Recommendation! All thumbs up.

Gegen 00:30 Uhr war ich im Bett, um 7 Uhr klingelte der Wecker wieder, denn Samstag hieß: Creativa in Dortmund!!! Ich muss sagen: fit ist anders, aber es war trotzdem wieder ein tolles Erlebnis. So viele interessante Dinge… wie immer überwältigend. Hier ein kurzer Einblick.

I finally got to bed about half past midnight and the alarm clock went off again at 7 am because Saturday meant: CREATIVA craft convention in Dortmund!!! I have to say: well rested is something else but it was still a great day. So many interesting things… overwhelming, as usual. Here are a few impressions:

Am Sonntag folgte dann noch ein lang erwartetes Highlight: Bundesliga-Badminton in Bonn-Beuel. Spannende Matches, unglaubliche Ballwechsel und die Erkenntnis, dass es dienstags in der Haribohalle so ziemlch an allem hakt. Auf welches Manko nur soll ich mich morgen konzentrieren?!

And then on Sunday we went to see premier league badminton in Bonn-Beuel, a long awaited highlight. Thrilling matches, incredible rallies and the realization that we have to work on basically everything in our „Tuesday group“ in Kessenich. What should I concentrate on?!

Vor mittlerweile einigen Jahren habe ich ein Zitat gefunden, das mir sehr gefallen hat – und bis vor wenigen Tagen nicht das richtige Motiv dazu. Aber dann fand ich das hier verwendete bei Bugaboo. Und weil das so gut passt, habe ich das Zitat auf der Innenseite untergebracht:

Insgesamt bin ich hoch motiviert, denn meine Karte von letzter Woche hat es unter die Top 3 bei Holly Jolly geschafft 🙂 Wie auch immer, habt einen guten Start in die neue Woche!
