Es ist Februar – auch wenn man das beim Blick in meinen Blumenkasten oben nicht glauben mag. Eine ziemlich komische Mischung kommt da zustande, der herbstliche Kürbis, die Iris ist frisch aufgeblüht, die Heide sprießt wie irre… Ich war ja hier und da schon auf der Vermisstenliste, aber ich weiß im Moment einfach nicht so wirklich, wo mir der Kopf steht. 5.2. und ich habe noch keine Weihnachtskarte gebastelt – so langsam mache ich mir Sorgen!

It’s February – even if it seems unlikely when you look at my flower box up there. It’s become a really weird combination, the autumnal pumpkin, the iris that has only very recently started to bloom, the erica sprouting like crazy… And I was already listed as MIA but it’s just that I don’t know whether I’m coming or going these days. February 5 and I haven’t made a single Christmas card this year – I’m starting to get a little worried!

Aber zu einer Geburtstagskarte ist es gekommen (auch wenn ich für Fotografien derzeit kein Tageslicht sehe… sorry für die Farben): ich habe eine Teabag-Fold Anleitung für Blüten gefunden, von Vicky. Geht superschnell und ich mag den 3D-Effekt. Wie auch immer: sie kam heute zum Einsatz, denn Kirsten hatte zum Brunch geladen!

But I got around to making a birthday card (even though I never seem to get around to taking pictures in daylight these days… sorry for these awful colors): I’d found a teabag fold tutorial for flowers, by Vicky. It’s really quick and I like the 3D effect. Anyhow, it was put to good use today as Kirsten had invited to brunch with her!

Wir waren im Café de Muffendorf – und es war in mehrfacher Hinsicht ein Erlebnis. Erstens: Muffendorf – zumindest die Muffendorfer Hauptstraße – ist ein absolut malerischer Ort. Zweitens: das Café hatte einen leckeren Latte Macchiato und fantastische Croissants im Angebot. Die Etagere unten zeigt dabei das Muffen de Luxe Frühstück für zwei Personen… wir haben es zu dritt kaum leer bekommen. Drittens: es ist wohl eines der kinderfreundlichsten Cafés, das ich jemals aufgesucht habe (jedenfalls ohne explizit ein Eltern-Kind-Café zu sein).

We went to Café de Muffendorf – and it was quite the event in more than one sense. Forst of all: Muffendorf – or Muffendorf Main Street at least – is a positively picturesque place. Secondly: the Café served a superb Latte Macchiato and scrumptious croissants. The cake stand below shows what you get when you order the Muffen de luxe breakfast for two. There were three of us sharing and we had a hard time finishing it off. Thirdly: it is by far the most child-friendly place I have ever been (maybe apart from those that explicitly call themselves „parent-child café“).

Man regt sich nicht nur nicht auf, wenn ein Kinderwagen ins Café geschoben wird… es gibt eine Spielküche direkt vor der Theke, daneben eine große Kiste mit Büchern und Spielsachen jedweder Art. Und wenn die Bedienung dann über einen Teddybär stolpert, gibt es keine Blicke, die töten könnten, sondern eine Entschuldigung.

It’s not only that no one gets upset when a stroller is pushed into the café… there’s a toy kitchen right in front of the counter and next to it a large box with all kinds of toys and books. And when the waitress trips over a teddy bear there are no killing glances but an apology.

Der Hund gehört auch zur Ausstattung – und ist einer der zurückhaltensten, die ich je kennengelernt habe. Ich merke erst jetzt beim Blick auf das Foto, dass er offenbar einen Großteil der Zeit neben uns gesessen hat.

The dog is also from the café – and is one of the shiest I’ve met. It’s only now when I look at the picture the owner has taken that a realize he’s apparently spent a large amount of time sitting right next to us.

Mit meinem Zoom musste ich natürlich auch noch etwas spielen… es wird Zeit, dass ich wieder in den Botanischen Garten komme – aber ich denke (hoffe?) immer noch, dass der Winter noch kommt und dann wird es damit noch etwas dauern.

I have fooled around with the zoom a bit, too… it’s time I got to go to the Botanical Gardens again – but I still think (hope?) that winter will come at some point and so it will be a while longer.

Frohes Neues! / Happy New Year!

Da ist es, 2014. Kam total unspektakulär daher. Irgendwie eine Frühgeburt, habe ich das Gefühl. Das kann ja noch gar nicht sein. Aber so denn – auf in die Weihnachtskartenproduktion! Heute allerdings wohl doch nicht mehr, obwohl ich eben die erste Challenge entdeckt habe.

Here it is, 2014. And it just came unannounced somehow. It feels like an early birth. It can’t be 2014 already, can it? Well, I guess I’ll start on the Christmas cards then! Okay, not today – even though I did find this year’s first challenge.

Stattdessen war ich auf einem kleinen Spaziergang, um für Our Beautiful World einige Bilder zum Thema „Neujahr“ einzufangen. Da ich zu Weihnachten eine Kamera mit 20-fach optischem Zoom bekommen habe, wollte ich auch damit mal ein bisschen rumprobieren – da kommt eins zum anderen.

Instead, I went on a little stroll in the neighboorhood to capture a few images for this week’s prompt at Our Beautiful World, „New Year“. I got a new camera for Christmas, too, with an amazing 20x optical zoom and wanted to play with that as well.

Aber leider sieht Deutschland nach der Silvesternacht in großen Teilen auch aus wie eine Müllhalde wegen der Überreste der großen Böllerei, für die ich quasi jährlich immer weniger Verständnis aufbringen kann. Aber das mag anderen mit Kartenbasteln oder Wintersport gucken ähnlich gehen.

Unfortunately, large parts of Germany look like a dump on New Year’s Day as from Dec. 27 thru Dec. 31 fireworks are available in any supermarket or large store. So what happens is that everybody is shooting them off anywhere and in any direction and the street I live on feels like a warzone drenched in color for about an hour. I hate it and my level of tolerance towards it decreases by the year. I would be the perfect companion for any pet hiding in the basement!

Aber ich habe auch nach langer Zeit nochmal beim alten August vorbeigeschaut. Den hat jemand mit einer Schaufel ausgestattet – wahrscheinlich noch einer, der sich nach ein bisschen Schnee sehnt. Aber die „Ski-Installation“ from 2010 war deutlich kreativer.

But I also passed by old August again after a long time. Somebody gave him a shovel – I suppose it was someone who is also hoping for a little snow. The „ski installation“ from 2010 was way more creative, though.

20 Jahre / 20 years

Am vergangenen Wochenende fand er wieder statt – der Weihnachtskaffeeklatsch. Und weil wir in diesem Jahr unser 20-jähriges Jubiläum gefeiert haben, habe ich nach einem festlichen Thema zum Abschluss gesucht… und mich für „Downton Abbey“ entschieden. Auch wenn bislang nur eine weitere Kaffeeklatschlerin die Serie kennt.

Last weekend was coffeeklatsch time again. And as we celebrated our 20th anniversary this year I was looking for a really festive theme… and decided on „Downton Abbey“. Even though so far only one of the girls knows the show.

Es war eine schwere Geburt, Stuhlhussen im online Auktionshaus ersteigert, Silber von Oma und Muttern zusammengesucht und poliert, Geschirr und Kristallgläser besorgt – die Tischdecke war ein Albtraum. Der Kerzenleuchter fiel mir zufällig in die Hände (nicht vom LKW), den Blumenschmuck hatte ich anfertigen lassen.

It took quite some work, bought the chair covers at an online auction, collected Grandma’s and Mom’s silver and polished it, got the china and the crystal glasses – the tablecloth was a nightmare. I got my hands on the candelabra by accident and had the flowers done by the local florist.

Nachmittags gab es Marzipantorte, Apfelstrudel mit Vanille-Eis und Weihnachtsplätzchen (die fast ausschließlich Lars verdrückte), abends eine „Crispy Chestnut Soup“ und Sandwiches. Und zwischendurch so einiges, wie immer 😉

We had a marzipan cake, apple strudel with vanilla ice-cream and Christmas cookies (which were mainly eaten by Lars!) with the coffee and a „crispy chestnut soup“ with sandwiches for dinner. And a lot else in between, as usual 😉

Bei Kerzenlicht wurde es schnell schummrig und bei dem ganzen Geschnatter hatten wir unseren jüngsten Zuwachs dann auch irgendwann total ausgepowert.

It was a cozy affair by candlelight and with all the chatting we had pretty soon exhausted our youngest addition.

Ein absolutes Highlight war das Geschenk einer Freundin, die mir in stundenlanger Arbeit einen Quilt gemacht hat. Bislang gab es die immer als Krabbeldecke für Babies, aber ich hatte mal nachgehört, mit welchen Meriten man sich sonst noch so was verdienen könnte 😉

One of the friends gave me a hand-made quilt for a present – a highlight, really. So far they were only made and given as baby blankets but I had inquired what other merits would be considered in order to qualify for one 😉

Die Künstlerin sieht vor, dass der Quilt unter dem Weihnachtsbaum liegen soll, aber ich stehe fassungslos vor dieser Idee! Der wiegt ’ne Tonne und würde wahrscheinlich die Form des Ständers reindrücken, ganz zu schweigen von evtl. Überschwappen von Brackwasser und Harztropfen. Nein, das ist keine Option, oder?! Wie auch immer, habt ein schönes viertes Adventswochenende.

The artist intended for it to be used underneath the Christmas tree but I am stunned at the idea! It weighs a ton (the tree) and would probably emboss the shape of its stand into the quilt… and I don’t even want to think about brakish water spilling over or resin dropping down. No, that is not an option, is it?! Anyhow, enjoy the fourth weekend of advent!

Oops…

Und plötzlich war ich wie vom Erdboden verschluckt, aber es war wirklich verteufelt viel los im Büro in den letzten Tagen. Doch das hat einen wunderbaren Anlass: mein Kollege ist Vater geworden und hatte von heute auf morgen besseres vor 😉 Zuallererst muss ich jetzt mal den Gewinner des Dritten Advent Freebies verkünden…

And suddenly I dropped off the face of the earth but I was absolutely swamped at work those past days. The reason for that is a very happy one: a daughter was born to my colleague and he went into parental leave from one day to the next – good for him! 9 Tage ! / 9 days!

Nur noch 9 Tage bis Weihnachten!! Wie konnte das passieren?! Hier war was los am Wochenende, doch dazu später mehr… es gilt das traditionelle 3.-Advent-Freebie zu verlosen. Soeben habe ich das Ergebnis des Projekts Rumtopf 2013 getestet. Ich glaube, er ist noch besser, als die ersten beiden Jahrgänge. Auf jeden Fall mit mehr unterschiedlichen Früchten – da ist wirklich fast alles drin.

Only 9 days to go until Christmas! How did that happen?! A lot was going on here on the weekend but I’ll get to that some other time… now is the time for the third of advent blog candy. I just tried the 2013 edition of the homemade fruit in rum. I think it’s even better than the two previous vintages. One thing’s for sure: the variety of fruit has increased – there’s almost nothing that’s not to be found.

Ich träume von einer schwedischen Weihnacht mit viel Schnee und einem bollernden Ofen und ein bisschen Skilanglauf in einsamen, stillen Wäldern in den drei Stunden, die es so ein bisschen hell ist. Vielleicht trifft man da auf einen Elch.

Schneeflocken-Armee / Snowflake Army

Manchmal ist es Lucia, manchmal das Christkind – in diesem Jahr war es der Nikolaus, der sich auch meiner Kollegen angenommen hat. Und das hat er gemacht, bevor Eva mir beigebracht hat, wie man ordentliche Schleifen bindet! Ich habe viele nette Kollegen…

Sometimes it’s Lucia, sometimes it’s Christ Child – this year it was Saint Nicholas who looked after my colleagues. And he did that before Eva kindly taught me how to tie ribbons nicely! I have many nice colleagues…

Teamwork

Wie gesagt: ich bin in diesem Jahr auf der Schiene der selbst gemachten Weihnachtsgeschenke und dies ist echte Teamwork für eine kleine Freundin, die ich viel zu lange nicht gesehen habe. Und sie wird einen Kälteschock kriegen, wenn sie wieder hier ist. Dem ist entgegenzuwirken.

As I’ve said before: this Christmas I wanted to have as many self-made presents as possible and this is a piece of incredible team work for a little friend who I haven’t seen in too long a time. And as she is likely to suffer from the drop in temperatures when she comes back, I decided to help ease the shock.

Den Schal habe ich gestrickt (mein drittes Werk), der schöne Aufnäher ist aus dem Shop KUDDELBUNT bei Dawanda und dann hat mir eine liebe Kollegin noch das Aufnähen abgenommen – definitv zu fortgeschritten für mich! Vielen Dank nochmal an dieser Stelle. Wie sieht’s denn bei euch aus? Noch viele Geschenke zu besorgen?

I’ve knitted the scarf (my third…), the cute pony is from the shop KNUDDELBUNT at Dawanda and then a nice colleague did the sewing for me – much too advanced for me! Thanks again! And how are your presents coming along? Do you still have many to make or buy?

Die Bunten / The colorful ones

Auch in diesem Jahr hatte ich die Freude, mit Cyril zu backen. Cyril liebt unterschiedlichste Plätzchenausstecher, bunten Zuckerguss und Dekoperlen etc. Das ist gut so – denn für mich zählt ja immer erst der Geschmack, die Tradition und solcher Schnickschnack. Aber was würde ich nicht alles verpassen…

Luckily, I got together for a baking session with Cyril this year again, too. Cyril loves all the different cookie cutters, colorful icings and decorative items. And that’s great – because I would only go for taste, tradition and such paraphernalia. But the things I would miss out on…

Hinter vielen Plätzchen steckt eine Geschichte („So ein Ahornblatt muss ich auch machen – Kanada ist ja irgendwie cool. Also brauchen wir weiß und rot.“ – „Orange und grün brauchen wir auch noch, denn das Kleeblatt gehört nach Irland und das sind die Farben der Flagge.“ – „Der große Elch muss sein – das hat doch schon Tradition! Oh… und es hat auch Tradition, dass mir ein Bein abbricht.“) und zu den ganz frei gestalteten sind wir erst zum Ende gekommen. Der Ghettoblaster wird ein Klassiker. Und findet ihr auch die Pizza?

Many of these cookies have their own story („I have to make one of these maple leaves – Canada is really cool. So we need white and red.“ – We need orange and green, too, because this glover belongs to Ireland and these colors are in their flag.“ – „The large moose is a must – that has become a tradition. Oh… and it’s also become a tradition that one of the legs breaks of.“). We only got to the independently designed ones towards the end. The boom box will certainly become a classic. Can you find the pizza, too?

Seit 1995 wohne ich, von einigen Auslandsaufenthalten abgesehen, in Bonn. Unzählige Male bin ich an diesem Treppenaufgang zwischen zwei Gebäudeteilen eines von mir häufig frequentierten Kaufhauses vorbeigegangen – und immer war er durch eine Gittertür abgesperrt. Dieses Mal war es anders. Und die Gelegenheit habe ich genutzt.

I’ve been living in Bonn, on and off, since 1995. Over the years I have passed this stairway, which is located between two parts of the building housing one of my favorite stores, countless times – and every time it was closed off by a lattice door. This time was different and I jumped at the chance.

Ein kleines Schild weist zwar darauf hin, was sich dort oben befindet und das wirkt schon ziemlich bizarr. Aber es ist tatsächlich dieses kleine Kapellchen, nur 3,5 auf 3,5 Meter, die Helenenkapelle. Eine Legende besagt, dass sie während eines Besuchs der Hl. Helena im Jahre 330 erbaut worden sein soll – die romanische Architektur deutet eher auf die zweite Hälfte des 12. Jahrhunderts (1160). Und wenn man aus einem ihrer zwei Fenster guckt, blickt man auf leicht verschwommene aktuelle Modetrends.

There is a small plaque letting you know what to find at the top of the stairway and somehow it is a bizarre thought. But it’s really this little chapel, 3.5 by 3.5 meters (11.5 by 11.5 feet), Saint Helen’s Chapel. According to legend it was built when Saint Helena visited in AD 330 – but the architectural style tells the experts it was built more towards the end of the 12th century, AD 1160, in the Romanesque period. And when you look out of one of its two windows, you get a blurry glimpse of the latest trends in fashion.

Die heutige Lage ist ja sehr besonders – ich würde zu gerne wissen, wie die Gesamtanlage im Original wohl ausgesehen hat. Im Kaufhaus steht ein Schild, das (u.a.) beschreibt, dass es eine Hauskapelle war, die im zweiten Stock eines Tuffsteinbaus angesiedelt war. Im Netz findet man hier detaillierte Infos zur Historie und hier noch weitere und deutlich bessere Fotos. Und weil es ein so stiller Ort im vorweihnachtlichen Einkaufschaos ist, wird es mein Beitrag bei Our Beautiful World diese Woche, wo es um Stille geht.

The chapel’s location today is really special – I would love to know what the original building (complex) looked like. There’s a plaque inside the store as well that says (among others) that it used to be a house chapel (?) on the second floor of a building constructed of tuff. You can see a few more and far better pictures here. And because it’s such a quiet spot right in the middle of the shopping madness, it’s my entry for the „Stilness“ prompt at Our Beautiful World this week

Sonne gefragt? / Want sun?

Dieses Jahr sollten viele Geschenke selbst gemacht sein (und jetzt stelle ich fest, dass ich zu wenig Honig gegessen habe, um ausreichend Gläser zu haben, um den Riesenrumtopf abfüllen zu können – der beste bislang, u.a. mit supersaftigen Birnen…). Wie auch immer: große Freude haben mir die Sterne aus Transparentpapier gemacht. Sowohl in der Herstellung, als auch am Fenster.

This year many presents were supposed to be handmade. (and only now do I notice that I haven’t eaten enough honey in order to have enough glasses to fill the mega pot of fruit in rum into – the best so far with really juicy pears and others…). Anyhow, I enjoy(ed) these stars very much, both making them and looking at them.
