Happy Mail!!


Gestern habe ich eine wunderbare Überraschung in der Post gehabt – Happy Mail! Es war ein dicker Brief aus Australien, der Gewinn einer Challenge bei den UnstampaBelles. Ich hatte eigentlich nicht mehr damit gerechnet, es verloren gegeben – denn es war lange unterwegs, wie man oben rechts sehen kann:

I got Happy Mail yesterday!! It was a thick envelope from Australia, the prize I got in one of the challenges of the UnstampaBelles. I had already gotten used to the thought that it had gotten lost on the way – it was en route for quite a while as you can see in the upper right corner:

Unterwegs seit 14. August – mehr als 3 Monate!! Aber darin befand sich ein exquisites Notiz- oder Tagebuch und Schleifenbänder…

It had been travelling since August 14 – more than 3 months! Inside I found a most exquisite notebook or diary and ribbons…

Unglaublich, oder? Wenn das mal kein Muster für Weihnachten 2013 ist… Ansonsten bin ich beschäftigt mit dem Fundraiser fürs Elisabeth Hospiz und die 500 Euro-Marke scheint genommen. Gleich kommt der Handwerker wieder, denn das Rauchproblem in meinem Schlafzimmer ist immer noch nicht gelöst (Woche 9 auf dem Sofa). Und ich bereite eifrig meine adventlichen Blogeinträge vor, denn wie in einem Adventskalender soll jeden Tag was interessantes zu finden sein (also eher weniger Karten 😉 ) Habt ein schönes Wochenende!

Indredible! I think this might be an inspiration for Christmas 2013… Other than that I’m still busy with the fund raiser for the hospice – the 500 Euro threshold is passed. The handyman is about to return as the smoke problem in my bedroom is still not solved (week 9 on the sofa). And I’ve been working feverishly on my advent blog posts: just as with an advent calendar I want to publish something interesting and Christmas-related (not so many cards 😉 ) every day. For now, have a nice weekend!

Ging nicht anders / How could I not?


Seit gestern habe ich eine neue Dose. Eine Plätzchendose, ganz klar. Die musste ich haben, ging nicht anders. Nicht, dass ich nicht schon geschätzte 27 hätte, aber Plätzchendosen hat man ja nie genug, zu dieser Jahreszeit. Und da ich sie schonmal hatte, musste sie ja auch gefüllt werden, klar. Ging nicht anders.

I got a new tin yesterday. A tin for biscuits – very obviously. I just had to get it – how could I not? It’s not like I didn’t have about 27 other biscuit tins but you can never have enough of them, now can you? Especially at this time of year. And now that I had it, I needed to fill it, right. How could I not?

Um die Aktion noch ein klein wenig zu rechtfertigen, habe ich ein neues Rezept ausprobiert, das ich in Ländlicher Weihnachtstraum gefunden hatte: gefülltes Aprikosengebäck. Bei näherer Betrachtung war das Rezept deutlich verbesserungsbedürftig, aber letztlich kam was essbares dabei raus.

As I had to find a reason for this early advent activity, I decided to try a new recipe that I’d found in a new book on Christmas decorations, recipes etc. (in German): apricot biscuits. After I’d had a closer look at the recipe it was obvious it needed some… adjustments but the end result was okay.

Ja, ich denke, so kann’s weitergehen… nur noch 37 Tage, ich fass‘ es nicht. Habt einen guten Start in die Woche.

Yes, I think things can continue down this avenue… only 37 days to go, I can’t believe it. Have a good start into the week.

Männerkarte / One for the boys


Die Karte ist schon ein paar Tage alt, aber ich komme heute endlich – und gerade noch rechtzeitig – dazu, sie für die Challenge bei Winter Wonderland zu posten: es soll eine Karte für Männer sein.

The card is a couple of days old but today I finally get to post it – just in time for the challenge over at Winter Wonderland. It’s supposed to be a card about men – which I interpret as „for men“.

Ich halte mich ja schon grundsätzlich für den im Vergleich eher schmucklosen Bastler und auch, wenn der Baum hier ziemlich verschnörkelt ist, so geht es mir doch um die Geradlinigkeit der Fliesen im Hintergrund.

I’m by nature a crafter whose output is rather unembellished by comparison and even if this little tree is pretty ornamental, I find the tile-like background much less girlie… and the fact that it contrasts sharply with the tree only adds to that. I think 😉

De Zoch kütt / This year’s parade


Gestern war das Highlight der St. Martins-Saison: der Zug in Dottendorf, bei bestem Wetter. Und vorab: das wird ein Foto-Eintrag.

Yesterday was the highlight of the St. Martin’s season: the parade in Dottendorf, in perfect weather. And just so you know: this will be a picture post.

Waldtiere waren total in, Igel, Elche, Eichhörnchen… einen Fuchs habe ich glaube ich auch gesehen.

Forest animals were very popular, hedgehogs, mooses, squirrels… I think I also saw a fox.

Die ganze Herde Shauns waren auch ein Anblick für die Götter.

A whole flock of Shauns were something to die for.

Aber ob Insekten aus Wasserflaschen, Roboter, Geister, ganze Zoos auf einer Laterne oder auch grell leuchtende Schweine, die an Häuserfronten hängen – soviele wunderschöne Kreationen!

There were insects made from water bottles, robots, ghosts, whole zoos on one lantern or brightly shining pigs hanging on house fronts – so many wonderful creations!

Die Minnie hat mich total nostalgisch gemacht… ich hatte auch mal eine rechteckige Laterne, die auf jeder Seite eine andere Figur des guten alten Walt hatte. Die hat auch mehrere Saisons überlebt.

Minnie made me all nostalgic… I once made a rectangular lantern that featured a Disney character on one of each of its four sides. It was with us for a few years.

Und wenn ganze Häuser zur Laterne werden, ohne dass die Feuerwehr kommen muss, stehe ich mit offenem Mund davor.

Don’t you just love it when whole houses become lanterns (and the fire department doesn’t have to interfere?)?

Die Chancen standen auch gut, meinen Prinzen zu finden, aber ich bin einfach nicht nah genug an die Froschkönige dran gekommen, um ihnen einen Schmatzer aufzudrücken…

Chances were I would also find my prince but I just couldn’t get close enough to one of the Frog Kings to smooch…

Irgendwie habe ich Lust, mal einen richtigen, geschnitzten Kürbis durch die Gegend zu tragen…

This makes me think I should carry around a real carved pumpkin next time…

Laterne, Laterne! / St. Martin’s Day


Seit Jahren wollte ich das nochmal machen: eine Martinslaterne basteln. Und endlich habe ich es durchgezogen. Doppelt motiviert dadurch, dass ich eben heute, am St. Martinstag, auf den Geburtstag einer Freundin eingeladen bin und es ein perfektes Geschenk wäre, habe ich gemessen, gezeichnet, geschnitten, geklebt.

I’ve been wanting to this for years: make my own St.Martin’s Day lantern again. And I finally did it. I was highly motivated as it’s a friend’s birthday today, the very St. Martin’s Day, and I figured it would be the perfect gift. So I measured and sketched and cut and glued.

Und während dieser Post automatisch „scharfgeschaltet“ wird, sitze ich gerade beim Geburtstagsbrunch, vielleicht sogar im Schein der Laterne. So schwierig war es gar nicht. Nach dem Ausmessen und Aufzeichnen der äußeren Begrenzungen (eine Seite hat das Maß 29x24cm) habe ich die Motive des Herbstthemas aufgezeichnet, dann ausgeschnitten (siehe links oben im Bild). Als nächster Schritt wurden die verschiedenfarbigen Stücke Transparentpapier auf die Innenseite geklebt (oben rechts) und danach nochmal mit einer Art Schutzschicht farblosen Transparentpapiers hinterlegt (unten links). Von vorne sah es dann auch ohne Beleuchtung schon ganz gut aus (unten rechts).

And while this post is automatically published I’m attending the birthday brunch – maybe by the light of the lantern. And it wasn’t even that difficult to make. I measured and drew the actual lantern (one side is 29x24cm) and then sketched the fall motives onto it before I cut them out (see upper left above). Then I added the different pieces of colored transparent paper on the inside (see upper right above) and afterwards added a protective layer of colorless transparent paper (see lower left above). It looked pretty good from the outside without lighting already (see lower right above).

Auch wenn der Maiskolben ein bisschen was von einer Traubendolde hat – es hat Spaß gebracht! Morgen bin ich wieder in Dottendorf, bei meinem Lieblingszug. Ein bisschen hatte ich gehofft, dass ich die Laterne vielleicht dort würde einweihen können, aber oh well. Nächstes Jahr mit einer neuen!

Even if the corn on the cob somehow reminds me of grapes – I had such fun making this! Tomorrow I’ll be in Dottendorf again, attending my favorite parade. I had hoped to use the lantern there but – oh well. I’ll make a new one next year!

PS: Ihr seid unglaublich! Dank zahlreicher Bestellungen und teils großzügigster Aufrundungen stehe ich kurz vor 400 Euro für das Hospiz… das lässt mich ja fast noch nach 500 streben! Na, wer braucht noch einen Adventskranz in a box?

PS: You rock! Thanks to numerous orders and often most generous rounding up I’m about to reach 400 Euros raised for the hospice… I’m about to hope for 500! So: who out there still needs an Advent Wreath in a Box?

Einfarbig / Monochromatic

Bevor ich hier thematisch in die Challenge der UnstampaBelles einsteige, wo es diesmal darum geht, eine einfarbige Karte zu basteln, muss ich das mal loswerden: Leute, ihr seid der reine Wahnsinn! Vom Adventskranz in a box sind bereits 43 Exemplare unters Volk gekommen – ich bin begeistert! Und es ist noch nicht mal Mitte November… VIELEN DANK – und weiter so!

Before I get right into the current challenge over at the UnstampaBelles which is „monochromatic“ I have to tell you this: guys, you are amazing! An incredible 43 Advent Wreaths in a Box are already sold – I’m stunned! And it’s not even mid-November yet… Thanks so much – and keep it up!

Aufgrund der Massenbestellungen bastele ich momentan nicht viel anderes als kleine Boxen, aber zu dieser Karte hat es dann doch noch gereicht. Engel sind ja nicht meins, aber irgendwie hatte mich dieser doch angesprochen.

Due to the mass orders I don’t get to make much else but little boxes these days but I did manage to make this card, too. I’m not really into angels but somehow this did speak to me.

Und nun… mehr Adventskränze! 🙂

Advent… kommt! / Advent approaching

Es ist gar nicht mehr lange hin bis zum ersten Advent, gerade mal ein Monat noch. Und ich habe mir eine voradventliche Spendenaktion für das Elisabeth-Hospiz in Lohmar einfallen lassen: den „Adventskranz in a box“.

There’s not all that much time left until it’s the first of advent – only about a month. I have come up with a pre-advent fund-raiser for the Elisabeth Hospice in Lohmar: the „Advent Wreath in a Box“

Das ist der Prototyp. Ein schönes kleines Mitbringsel, das ein Lächeln auf’s Gesicht zaubert… eine Kleinigkeit zu einem Geburtstag im November, eine nette Geste für den Gastgeber eines Abendessens, ein Dankeschön für’s Blumengießen im Urlaub – oder einfach mal so für eine Kollegin…

This is the prototype. A cute little present that makes people smile… a little something for a November birthday, a small gesture for the hostess of a dinner, a thank you for the neighbor who took care of your flowers while you were on vacation – or just because, to surprise a colleague…

Meine Marktforschung hat ergeben, dass 3,50€ ein Preis ist, der Sinn macht – aufrunden geht immer 😉 Um den Reiz noch etwas zu erhöhen, setze ich noch einen drauf: für jeden verkauften Adventskranz in a box lege ich 3,50€ auch nochmal in die Spendenbox (da ich den Jackpot immer noch nicht geknackt habe, muss für den Zuschuss aber eine Deckelung bei 40 verkauften Exemplaren erfolgen). Also, lasst mich bluten! Schönes Wochenende!

Market research has shown that a price of 3,50€ is good – of course it’s always possible to round up for the good cause 😉 And to make this even more attractive there’ll be an added value: for every box sold I will add another 3,50€ to the overall donation (seeing that I have not won the lottery jackpot yet, I have to cap this at 40 boxes sold).
