V is for Vibrant Colors

Morgen ist Feiertag, Freitag habe ich frei genommen… es fühlt sich gut an! Und eben kam sogar noch der Handwerker, der sich eines nervigen Problems annehmen soll: die neuen Mieter in der Wohnung unter mir sind Raucher – und offenbar waren alle in den 10 Jahren vorher Nichtraucher. In der Folge ist mein wunderbar renoviertes Schlafzimmer immer wieder eine Raucherbar. Mehrere Nächte wurden schon im Wohnzimmer verbracht. Er wird in der anderen Wohnung arbeiten und hat aller Voraussicht nach schon in 9 Tagen Zeit dafür…

Tomorrow is a holiday here and I took Friday off…it feels good! And the „skilled worker“ who is going to deal with an annoying problem here also just left after checking out the situation: the new tenants in the apartment below mine are smokers – and apparently all others in the 10 years prior to their move-in weren’t. For the past weeks my wonderfully re-done bedroom has become a smokers‘ club. There were a few nights spent on the sofa already. Anyhow, there’s good news: he will tackle the problem in THEIR apartment and if all goes well he’ll start on it in little more than a week…

Aber es wird immer eine neue Challenge geben (was für ein Wortspiel!) und die laufende bei ABC Christmas Challenge kommt mir gerade recht: leuchtende Farben! Das wunderbare Band oben habe ich im März auf der Creativa gefunden – ich hätte zwar nicht damit gerechnet, es für eine Weihnachtskarte zu verwenden, aber so ist es!

But there will always be a challenge (what a pun!) and the current one at ABC Christmas Challenge is V is for Vibrant Colors. I found the cute ribbon above at the Creativa fair back in March – and wouldn’t thought I’d use it on a Christmas card but there you go!

Die Farben sind leuchtender, als sie hier rauskommen… egal! Heute war ich auch nochmal bei meinem ersten Schlaglochgarten-Projekt und Überraschung: die Pflanzen waren alle noch eingepflanzt, das Moos jedoch war weg. Hm. Vielleicht weggeflogen? Wie auch immer: schönen Feiertag und auf bald!

The colors are more vibrant in real life… oh well. Today I also checked how my first project in pothole gardening was faring and surprise: the plants were all still there – just the moss was gone. Mmh. Maybe a gust of wind took it? Anyhow, have a nice holiday tomorrow (should there be one where you are) and see you soon!

Schlaglochgarten / Pothole garden

Die Temperaturen sind knapp über null. Der Hot Choco Coffee Mix von Gail schmeckt super (besonders garniert mit chocolate biscuit balls, die ich noch im „Lager“ hatte). Und im Fernsehen werden wieder Sätze wie „Do wor a Schlag und den hob i erwoschen“ aus Interviews ohne Untertitel wiedergegeben… es ist ein perfekter Sonntag!

The temperatures are just above 0°C/32°F. Gail’s Hot Choco Coffee Mix is delicious (especially when topped with chocolate biscuit balls which I happened to find in my storage). And there’s the Alpine Ski World Cup on TV again… it has been a perfect Sunday!

Als eine Kollegin meinen Post zur aktuellen Balkonbepflanzung gelesen hatte, meinte sie, das sei ja fast wie bei diesem Typen mit den Schlaglochgärten. Ich habe sie nur verständnislos angeguckt – noch nie davon gehört. Jetzt kenne ich ihn, den Pothole Gardener aus London, und hatte mir vorgenommen, dass ich das auch mal probieren will.

When a colleague had read my post on my current flower box creations she said that it looked a bit like what this dude did with potholes. I drew a blank – didn’t have a clue what she was talking about. Now I know him, the Pothole Gardener from London, and started planning by first attempt at pothole gardening.

Ich musste erstmal ein bisschen durch die Gegend fahren, bevor ich überhaupt ein Schlagloch gefunden habe (!). Das habe ich schon letzte Woche gemacht. Heute war das dann alles so aufregend, dass ich gleich vergessen habe, ein Foto vom Ursprungszustand zu machen und die Erde schon eingefüllt hatte…

I had to cycle around looking for quite a while before I actually found a pothole (!). I did that last week already. And then today this whole thing was so exciting that I forgot to take a „before“ picture and had already filled it with soil…

Bei den herrschenden Temperaturen ist die Auswahl ja nicht mehr sehr groß – so dass ich mich für das gleiche Thema wie im Blumenkasten entschieden habe.

Seeing how far temperatures have dropped here there weren’t all that many plants to choose from – so I decided to re-enact the flower box theme.

Da das Schlagloch relativ nah am Geologischen Institut ist, habe ich mich außerdem für die Plünderung meiner Steinsammlung entschieden…

As the Department of Geology is close to the pothole garden, I also decided to pillage my rock collection…

Allerdings befürchte ich, dass das alles spätestens morgen Mittag platt ist… Wir werden sehen. Jetzt erstmal einen schönen Restsonntag!

I do believe, though, that it will be all but gone by noon tomorrow… We’ll see. For now: enjoy your Sunday!

Spiel mit der Tradition / Playing with tradition

Unerwartet habe ich einen Abend allein zuhause – und bin fast überfordert. Aus Verzweiflung habe ich schon meinen Basteltisch aufgeräumt 😉 Um mich dann mit voller Wucht der Oktober-Challenge bei CCAYR zu widmen: ein traditionelles Weihnachtsmotiv in nicht-traditionellen Farben oder traditionelle Farben mit einem nicht-typischen Weihnachtsmotiv.

I am „home alone“ unexpectedly – and am almost unable to cope. Out of sheer desperation I have even reinstated order in my creative nook 😉 But then I dove right into the October challenge over at CCAYR: to use non-traditional colors with a Christmas motive or traditional colors with an unusual motive.

Sorry für das üble Foto, aber ohne Tageslicht ist meine Fotoausrüstung überfordert… besser geht’s nicht. Babyblaue Karte und eine „traditionelle“ Schneeflocke in schrillem Metallic orange, auf dem Katalogbild eines gewebten Teppichs.

I apologize for the bad quality of the picture but my photo equipment is not up to the task when there’s no daylight… this is as good as it gets. A „baby blue“ card with a „traditional“ snowflake in bright metallic orange, with the picture of a woven carpet from a catalogue.

Anders / Different

Die Schneeinspiration aus Nordkanada hat gewirkt: bei Winter Wonderland heißt es in dieser Woche „alles, nur keine Karte.“ Also mal ganz was anderes 😉

Den Papp-Rohling habe ich bei Das Bastelhäuschen aufgetan und den Martha Stewart Glitter hatte ich schon ein Weilchen… endlich hat es ZOOM gemacht…

I found the cardboard candle holder at Das Bastelhäuschen and I’d had the Martha Stewart glitter for quite a while already… and finally it clicked.

Na, jetzt wo ich die Großaufnahme auf dem Bildschirm habe sehe ich, dass ich wohl noch einen kleinen Fehler ausgleichen muss. Wie auch immer: bis die Tage!

Well, now that I see the close-up on the screen I realize I need to apply a little finishing touch there… Anyhow, see you around!

Überwältigend / Awesome

Meine Blog-Bekanntschaft Gail im Norden Kanadas hat sich schon am Samstag über meine knalligen Herbstfarben aufgeregt. Denn dort, wo sie wohnt, waren über Nacht gut 45cm Schnee gefallen… mit ging das Herz auf, aber meine Schneefräse ist auch nicht kaputt. Also, ich habe gar keine – ihr wisst, was ich meine.

My friend Gail from Northern Canada was already quite upset on Saturday when I posted pictures of the wonderful fall colors we’re having. Thing is, they got about a foot and a half of snow overnight… I would have been overjoyed but then of course my snow blower isn’t broken. I mean, I don’t even have one but you know what I mean. Gail, I’m not doing this to spite you – consider it an attempt at getting some warmth your way!

Bei dem besten Wetter gestern hatte ich mich spontan zu einer Art „Picknick Lunch“ im Botanischen Garten entschieden – aber ich konnte ja kaum in Ruhe zuende essen…

With yesterday’s perfect summer weather I spontaneously decided on a picknich lunch at the Botanical Gardens – but I could hardly sit still long enough to finish it…

U is for Up To You


Wunderbar! Eine Challenge, bei der ich endlich diese niedlichen Lebkuchenmänner unterbringen kann: bei ABC Christmas Challenge geht es in der laufenden Runde ganz nach mir. Schon vor einer ganzen Weile habe ich sie im Pink Cat Studio von Melissa aufgetan.

Unerwartete Massen / Unexpected crowds

Als ich diesen Morgen zur Arbeit fuhr, kamen mir in Höhe des alten HARIBO-Geländes Menschen mit allen Arten großer Gefäße entgegen, Mülltonnen, hochbeladene Schubkarren, ebensolche Bollerwagen… alles. Schnell wusste ich, was es war: die große Kastanien-/Eicheln-Tauschaktion. „Schade, heute Nachmittag nach Feierabend wird es wohl schon vorbei sein.“

When I went to work this morning, I passed people carrying, pushing and pulling all kinds of containers… trash cans, wheel barrows, handcarts – you name it. And soon I realized what this was about: the great chestnut/acorn exchange at HARIBO. „Too bad,“ I thought, „it’s probably over by the time I get out this afternoon.“

Nun ja… nein. Es war die Hölle los. Laut den Aushängen lief die Aktion gestern und heute jeweils von 7 bis 16 Uhr… Ich kam nach 16 Uhr an und die Warteschlangen waren noch seeeeehr lang.

Well, no. It was packed. According to the signs this was a two-day event, Thursday and Friday from 7am to 4 pm. I got there later than 4 pm and the queues were still very looooong.

Lang und mit riesigen Mengen, hauptsächlich Kastanien.

Long and with huge amounts of primarily chestnuts.

Der Wechselkurs liegt bei 1kg Haribo für 10kg Kastanien oder 5kg Eicheln.

The exchange rate is at 1kg of HARIBO for 10kg of chestnuts or 5kg of acorns.

Und das Limit liegt bei 50kg Rohstoffe pro Person… da bringt man dann besser die Großfamilie mit, damit man genügend Köpfe hat.

This is limited to 50kg of unprocessed goods per person… so you better make sure to bring the extended family…

Und Unfälle gab es auch immer wieder – aber keine Sorge, das Mädel wurde nicht allein gelassen, da kam alsbald ein Helfer mit Schaufel (nicht, dass sich die Schwester erbarmt hätte).

And there were accidents all along – but don’t worry, the little girl wasn’t left alone. Soon somebody came with a shovel and helped her (not that her sister had cared).

Seit 1995 wohne ich nun schon in Bonn, hauptsächlich jedenfalls, und noch nie war ich auch nur in die Nähe geraten. Der reine Wahnsinn.

I’ve lived in Bonn, on and off, since 1995 and I’ve never been to this event. It’s crazy…

Du denkst, das ist viel? Na, dann guck mal hier:

Und ich werde das Gefühl nicht los, dass das alles von heute war und die gestrige Ausbeute schon unterwegs ist. Mir wurde gesagt, das Zeug würde als Winterfutter für Wildherden verwendet, die der passionierte Jäger „Herr Haribo“ überall habe, „in Österreich und so.“

And I can’t help thinking that this is only today’s harvest and yesterday’s is already on the road. I was told this was going to be used as winter forage for the deer herds that „Mr Haribo“, a passionate hunter, keeps all over the place, „in Austria and such.“

Und wovon leben all die Eichhörnchen, Rehe usw. hier in der Gegend?

And what do all „our“ squirrels, deer etc. eat in our woods?

Es sieht nicht so aus, als könnte noch viel übrig sein… Wie auch immer: habt ein schönes Wochenende!

Wald / Woods


Als ich diese Drillinge im schwedischen Möbelhaus meines Vertrauens sah, wusste ich gleich, was das Thema meiner diesjährigen Herbst-/Winterbepflanzung sein würde: Wald.

When I found these cuties in my trusted Swedish furniture store I knew immediately what theme to choose for this year’s fall/winter planting: the woods.

Und dann, im Garten- und Baumarkt meines Vertrauens, auch noch ein Rentier…

And then yesterday morning I found the reindeer…

Mal sehen, wie lange er durchhält, denn er ist nicht für Außendeko gedacht… aber vielleicht hilft das Imprägnierspray für Schuhe, dass ich ihm habe angedeien lassen. Mir huscht immer noch jedes Mal ein Lächeln über’s Gesicht, wenn ich ihn sehe. Insofern: ein Volltreffer.

We’ll have to see how long it lasts because it wasn’t meant to be outdoors… maybe the waterproofing spray for my shoes that I used on him will help. I still smile every single time I see him there. So: perfect.

Dann ist da noch die Igelfamilie, die sich schon im Herbst-Sale wiedergefunden hatte…

Then there’s the family of hedgehogs that was already in dire straits in the fall sale…

Es gibt auch das Kitz im Land der Riesenkiefernzapfen…

There’s also the fawn in the land of the giant pine cones…

Und er hier sammelt die Fliegenpilze… mal sehen, wie es wird, wenn Weihnachten in den Wald kommt 😉

And this dude is collecting the fly agarics (is it only in Germany that they are for good luck?)… anyhow, let’s see what happens when Christmas hits the woods 😉
