Meine Blog-Bekanntschaft Gail im Norden Kanadas hat sich schon am Samstag über meine knalligen Herbstfarben aufgeregt. Denn dort, wo sie wohnt, waren über Nacht gut 45cm Schnee gefallen… mit ging das Herz auf, aber meine Schneefräse ist auch nicht kaputt. Also, ich habe gar keine – ihr wisst, was ich meine.

My friend Gail from Northern Canada was already quite upset on Saturday when I posted pictures of the wonderful fall colors we’re having. Thing is, they got about a foot and a half of snow overnight… I would have been overjoyed but then of course my snow blower isn’t broken. I mean, I don’t even have one but you know what I mean. Gail, I’m not doing this to spite you – consider it an attempt at getting some warmth your way!

Bei dem besten Wetter gestern hatte ich mich spontan zu einer Art „Picknick Lunch“ im Botanischen Garten entschieden – aber ich konnte ja kaum in Ruhe zuende essen…

With yesterday’s perfect summer weather I spontaneously decided on a picknich lunch at the Botanical Gardens – but I could hardly sit still long enough to finish it…

Zu lange schon war ich nicht mehr hier gewesen und die Farbenpracht war einfach überwältigend.

It has been too long since I’d last been there and the colors were just awesome.

Die Frösche schweigen zu dieser Jahreszeit, aber ich habe mal erkundet, was sie so zu sehen kriegen.

The frogs are quiet at this time of the year but I checked out what they get to see when hopping on a stroll.

Oben stehendes Kunstwerk habe ich auch am Sonntag bei meiner Radtour entdeckt. Der Melbweiher am Poppelsdorfer Schloss wird saniert… und als man das Wasser abgepumpt hatte, kamen allerlei Gaben zum Vorschein. Daneben stand folgendes Schild:

I came across the piece of art above on my Sunday bike ride, too. The pond at Poppelsdorf Palace is undergoing a major clean-up and when they had pumped out all the water, they found quite a few „donations“. And they put up the following signboard next to it:

Zahlreiche Bonner Bürger haben die vergangenen 20 Jahre genutzt um den Botanischen Gärten umfangreiche Sachspenden zukommen zu lassen – meist in der Form metallischer Gegenstände (Fahrräder, Einkaufswagen) die im Melbweiher versteckt wurden.
Eventuell lebt in diesen Gaben aber auch die alte germanische Tradition des Flussopfers weiter, mit dem ein Gewässer gnädig gestimmt werden sollte. In unserem Falle sollte eventuell der Melbweiher davon abgehalten werden, seinen allsommerlichen Gestank zu verbreiten.
Wir sind für diese Bemühungen sehr dankbar, möchten aber dringend darum bitten, davon in Zukunft abzusehen.
Der sommerliche Geruch wird sich nach der angelaufenen umfangreichen Sanierung auch ohne Flussopfer nicht mehr einstellen.
Und wenn Sie uns etwas Gutes tun wollen, so bitten wir von Sachspenden abzusehen. Dagegen sind Geldbeträge in beliebiger Höhe auf das Konto des Freundeskreises der Botanischen Gärten immer sehr willkommen:

Numerous citizens of Bonn have accorded generous donations in kind to the Botanical Gardens over the past 20 years – usually in the form of metallic objects (bikes, shopping carts) that were hidden in the pond.
Possibly the old germanic tradition of river sacrifices to appease the water is being upheld here. In this case the intention could have been to keep the pond from turning malodorous in the summer.
We appreciate these efforts but do ask you to refrain from keeping up these traditions.
The smell will not return once the extensive clean-up measures are all implemented – even without river sacrifices.

Sie ist wieder da, die Sonne! Und zwar ist es wohl so, dass wir sie im Laufe dieses Monats schonmal gesehen haben, aber gefühlt war sie zuletzt im Januar zu sehen gewesen.

Sunshine’s back! Apparently we have seen it at some point earlier this month already but it feels as if it was last seen in about January.

Und alle sind total ausgeflippt. Ich war schon um 11 Uhr auf dem Rad unterwegs, auf meiner ersten großen Brückentour 2012. Und mit mir Hundertschaften an Radfahrern, Fußgängern, Inline-Skatern…

And everybody went nuts. I was out on my bike at 11 a.m. already, doing my very first Grand Bridge Tour of 2012. And there were hundreds out and about with me, bikers, pedestrians, skaters…

Natürlich bin ich letztlich auch nochmal im Botanischen Garten gelandet, der auch nicht gerade verwaist war. Und wie ihr euch denken könnt, habe ich einiges an Fotos im Angebot. Die überraschendsten zuerst – es fand nämlich an diesem Wochenende die Europäische Karnivorenbörse statt: da konnte man allerlei fleischfressende Pflanzen bestaunen und erwerben.

Of course in the end I stopped at the Botanical Gardens as well which weren’t exactly deserted, either. And as you might well image I have quite a few pictures to show. Let’s start with the unexpected ones – this weekend the Botanical Gardens hosted the European Carnivorous Plants Exhibition and Exchange: there was a lot to look at and purchase.

Faszinierend fand ich sie ja irgendwie schon und überlegte kurz, mir eine zuzulegen… aber dann siegte doch die Vernunft. Und die Sonne lockte wieder nach draußen… an den Seerosenteich.

I was somehow fascinated by them and considered buying one… but than common sense took over. And the sun was luring me outside again… to the water lily pond.

Den ich mir dann auch mal aus der Froschperspektive angesehen habe.

Which I also looked at from a frog’s perspective for the first time.

Und wie genau ich dieses letzte Foto finde, weiß ich gar nicht, aber auf jeden Fall gut!

I don’t really know why exactly I like this last picture – but I do!

Ja, ja, das sind sie, die Rhododendren – wie gesehen am 1. Mai 2012! Und das auch:

Das soll es zu diesem Thema aber auch gewesen sein, denn dieser Beitrag hat andere Protagonisten. Es liegt mir auf der Zunge zu sagen, dass es wieder die Zeit ist für die Poppelsdorfer Schlosskonzerte… aber die sind ja tatsächlich erst im Sommer und hoffentlich dieses Jahr wieder… dann würde ich es vielleicht endlich mal schaffen, sie zu besuchen. Nein, nein. Hier geht es um die Konzerte HINTER dem Poppelsdorfer Schloss, die immer so Anfang Mai stattfinden und mir das Herz aufgehen lassen, so dass ich hier mal gesammelte 88 MB hochlade, um sie mit euch zu teilen:

But this is all I’ll say about rhodies today as this post is supposed to have other protagonists. I was about to say that it’s time for the Poppelsdorf Palace Concerts again… but they will hopefully be given again this summer (so that I will finally have a chance to attend one, after all those years!). But no. This is about concerts being given BEHIND the Poppelsdorf Palace. They are usually given at the beginning of May and let my knees get weak so I’ve decided to upload a total of 88 MB to share with you:

Das Wetter war ziemlich abgefahren, als ich heute von der Arbeit kam – nach Norden sah es aus, als würde die Welt untergehen, von Südwesten her strahlte die Sonne. Aber es war trocken und so entschied ich kurzfristig, dass ein Zwischenstop beim Botanischen Garten gut käme.

The weather was quite weird when I came home from work today – it looked like we were going to be seriously drowned in the North while the sun was shining brightly in the Southwest. But it was dry and so I decided to make a quick stop at the Botanical Gardens.

Oben zu sehen ist die Zwergmandel, Prunus tenella, beheimatet im östlichen Mitteleuropa und in Ostsibirien. Wunderschön, oder? Aber deswegen war ich natürlich nicht da. Es ging wie immer um eine Statusabfrage am Rhododendron-Rondell (eine amerikanische Freundin nannte sie „rhodies“ – ich glaube, das übernehme ich!).

Above you can see the gorgeous Dwarf Russian Almond, Prunus tenella, native to Eastern Central Europe and Eastern Sibiria. But of course that is not why I was there. I was there to check the status of the „rhodies“ as a friend from the US has called them.

Schon deutlich mehr Rottöne – und gelb bis orange, wenn man weiß, wo man gucken muss. Ja, ich war auch wieder näher dran.

Quite a number of red hues now – and yellow and orange if you know where to look. Yes, I have some close-ups as well!

Und endlich waren auch mal andere Besucher da, die dieses sich langsam entfaltende Farbenspiel zu schätzen wissen. Deren Perspektive hätte ich auch mal gern.

And finally there were some other visitors as well who appreciate this slowly evolving color madness. I’d love to see it from their perspective some time…

Ein kleine Runde brachte mir auch den Silberwurz, Dryas drummondii, näher – in der Arktis und dem nördlichen Nordamerika zuhause. Das darauf folgende Gewächs glaube ich auch ohne Schild als Flieder identifiziert zu haben!

<emThe short route back to the exit had me have a closer look at the Yellow Mountain Avens, Dryas drummondii, coming from the Arctic and Northern North America. I think that even without a tag it’s safe to say that the picture following them is of a lilac tree!

Wie schön, dass der Botanische Garten wieder bis 18 Uhr geöffnet ist. Und wie schön, dass es heute am späten Nachmittag auch regenfrei blieb. Denn es war ja mal wieder höchste Zeit, beim Rhododendron-Rondell vorbeizuschauen. Es scheint, als hätte ich wirklich einen Narren daran gefressen…

How nice that the Botanical Gardens are open until 6pm again now. And how nice that we didn’t get any rain in the late afternoon today. Because it was high time I checked on the rhododendrons again. It looks like I really took a fancy to them…

Aber da schien ja nicht viel passiert zu sein… oder? Wenn man auf der aktuellen Bildhälfte links ganz genau guckt, kann man was erahnen. Aber man muss eben näher rangehen.

But it seemed that nothing much had happened… had it? If you check out the left part of the most recent picture you can sort of make out something. But you just need to get a little bit closer.

Es springt einen quasi an.

I’d say it sort of jumps out at you.

Und nein, ich kann nicht einfach nur viele kleine Bilder zu einer Collage zusammenfassen…

And no, I can’t combine a number of small pictures to create a collage…

Das würde der Farbenpracht einfach nicht gerecht.

It just wouldn’t do this blaze of color justice.

Und ich habe festgestellt, dass nicht nur im Rondell Rhododendrons stehen: die Rhodora Alpenrose (oder Rhododéndron canadénse – ja, ich habe das Schild fotografiert) oben habe ich in einem anderen Teil des Gartens aufgetan. Sie kommt aus dem östlichen Nordamerika. Wer hätte das gedacht.

And I noticed that other parts of the Gardens feature rhododendrons as well: the rhododéndron canadénse (yes, I did take a picture of the tag…) was somewhere else and is originally from Eastern North America. Who would have guessed.

Diese Schweizer Weide, salix helvetica, hätte ich am liebsten mit Ostereiern behangen. Sie findet man in den Alpen und den Karpaten. Noch eins?? Ja, eins noch:

I would have loved to decorate this salix helvetica with Easter eggs… It can be found in the Alps and Carpathians. Another one? Yes, one more:

Der allseits bekannte Federbuschstrauch, fothergilla major, beheimatet in North Carolina und Alabama – aber auch im Rheinland kommt er gut, wie ich finde. Aber nun: habt ein schönes Wochenende!

Wouldn’t you have guessed: fothergilla major, native to North Carolina and Alabama – but it fits in well in the Rhineland, too, I think. But now: have a nice weekend!

Aus der Eifel zurückgekehrt, traf es mich wie ein Blitz aus heiterem Himmel: 1. April! Endlich hat der Botanische Garten auch wieder am Wochenende auf und unter der Woche bis 18 Uhr. Ich kann also auch wieder mal nach dem Rechten schauen und eilte direkt zum Rhododendron-Rondell. NOCH ist alles ruhig, aber die Lage ist angespannt… hier geht bald richtig die Post ab!

Upon returning from the Eifel it hit me: April 1! Finally the Botanical Gardens are open on Sundays again and until 6pm on weekdays so I can go and check on things, too. I didn’t lose any time and headed for the rhododendrons. Everything is quiet NOW but the situation is tense… very soon the explosion will happen.

Unter ständiger Beobachtung habe ich weitere Bereiche erkundet…

I was under constant observation while checking on other parts of the Gardens…

Es gibt einige Umbaumaßnahmen. Unter anderem wird der Melbweiher saniert, da laufen die ersten Schritte – das bleibt sicher ebenfalls spannend zu beobachten. Auch die Enten nehmen jeden Quadratzentimeter genauestens unter die Lupe!

There are a few alterations going on. Among others the pond will be improved – the measures have just started. And apparently the ducks are keeping a close eye on everything as well!

Ruckzuck waren schon wieder 50+ Fotos geschossen…

Within the blink of an eyelid (almost) 50+ pictures were taken…

Aber ist es nicht eine glorreiche Idee, auch mal die Schilder mit zu fotografieren… dann kann ich auch mal genauer berichten, was ich mir eigentlich interessantes/schönes angesehen habe?

But isn’t it a glorious idea to include the tags as well? This way I will finally be able to tell you in more detail what interesting/beautiful things I looked at…

Fasziniert habe ich auch die Dutzende an Sonnenanbetern beobachtet und mich geduldig minutenlang positioniert, um sie abzulichten.

I was fascinated by the dozens of sun worshippers out on the rocks and was patienty waiting for minutes to take pictures.

Dann traf ich noch eine Kollegin, was an sich ja schon nett genug ist, aber die wies mich dann darauf hin, dass es ja ein besonderes Event gebe – der Titanenwurz blüht! Seit fast 10 Jahren wohne ich um die Ecke und habe es immer verpasst und heute renne ich an diesen Schlangen am Kassenhäuschen vorbei, halte kurz meinen Mitgliedsausweis hin und renne los – und ich dachte, die wären alle nur so happy, dass die Gärten wieder auf sind, wie ich…

Then I met a colleague which is nice enough as such but she let me know that there was a special event – the titan arum is in bloom! I’ve been living just around the corner for almost 10 years and always missed it. Today I’m bypasing the crowds at the ticket booth, just quickly flashing my membership card and think that they’ve all come because they’re as happy as I am about the gardens being open again…

Mit 1,80m war er ein eher kleines Teil und er hat auch gar nicht gestunken 🙂 Aber so habe ich ihn dann auch mal gesehen – kein Aprilscherz! Und damit: einen schönen Restsonntag!

At 1.80m it’s one of the smaller ones and it didn’t smell bad at all 🙂 But I finally got to see one – no April Fool’s Joke! And with this: enjoy what’s left of Sunday!

Gestern war ein extrem hektischer Tag, so ein 10.000 Volt-Tag, Dauerspannung. Auf dem Heimweg habe ich dann ganz spontan nochmal am Botanischen Garten angehalten, wo ich schon sehr lange nicht mehr war, um ein Viertelstündchen zu flanieren. Hier ein paar Eindrücke.

Yesterday was one hell of a day, a 10,000-volt day, permanent voltage. On the way home I spontaneously decided to stop at the Botanical Gardens (where I hadn’t been for a very long time) and to take a little stroll. So here are a few impressions.
