Im Juli habe ich mit einem Beitrag zur Plastikmüllwelle angefangen – und meinem Privatexperiment, wo immer möglich auf Plastik zu verzichten. Nach einem Monat mit Seifenschale statt Seifenspender und Shampoo in Seifenform statt Plastikflasche kann ich vermelden: funktioniert wunderbar… und das Shampoo scheint meinem Haar dazu auch noch besser zu tun. Ab jetzt ist der Plan, einmal im Monat einen weiteren Beitrag zu schreiben und die Reihe fortzusetzen.
In July, I wrote a post about the wave of plastic trash and how I decided to reduce plastic in my life. After a month with a soap bar instead of liquid soap and a shampoo bar instead of the liquid version in a plastic bottle I’m very happy with both changes – it’s working very well and my hair actually seems to prefer the new shampoo. My plan is to post about my experiment once a month and maybe inspire a few of you.
Im Guardian Weekly gab es einen Artikel, der wieder mit Zahlen um sich geschmissen hat, die einem die Luft wegnehmen: weltweit werden jede Minute 1 Million Plastikflaschen gekauft – wovon nur ein zu vernachlässigender Anteil recycelt wird. Plastikflaschen waren in meinem Leben hauptsächlich mit Sprudel gefüllt und die habe ich schon vor einigen Jahren abgeschafft. Allerdings weniger wegen der Plastikfrage, sondern mehr aus Faulheit: ich wollte die nicht ständig 40 Treppenstufen nach oben schleppen und bin auf einen SodaStreamer umgestiegen. Und habe es nie bereut.
I’ve recently read an article in the Guardian Weekly that dealt with the issue of plastic bottles, quoting numbers that simply take your breath away: globally, one million plastic bottles are sold every minute – and only a fraction of these will be recycled. For a long time, plastic bottles in my life mainly came filled with sparkling water but I got rid of them years ago already. That was not about plastic trash but about laziness: I was getting tired of lugging them all up the 40 steps to my apartment, so I bought a SodaStreamer and never looked back.
Meine neueste Anschaffung hingegen ist der Jaus’nWrap. Das sind in Bienenwachs- und Kiefernöl getränkte Baumwolltücher, die zur Frischhaltung von Lebensmitteln dienen und die Frischhaltefolie ersetzen sollen (für die Aufbewahrung im Kühlschrank fuktioniert ein auf eine Schüssel gelegter Teller auch wunderbar, falls diese althergebrachte Technik verloren gegangen ist). Das hat sich ein österreichischer Ingenieur überlegt. Wie so oft keine ganz preisgünstige Anschaffung, aber ich bin sehr angetan davon.
My latest purchase is the so-called Jaus’nWrap. They are cotton rags drenched in bees wax and pine oil that serve to keep food fresh – replacing cling wrap (placing a plate over a bowl in the refrigerator works well, too, in case you didn’t know). An ingenious engineer from Austria had the idea. As with the shampoo, the purchase was pricey but so far my experiences with it are very good.
Bislang habe ich sie getestet als Verpackung für ein Butterbrot, als Bedeckung für eine halbe Wassermelone, über einer Schale mit einem Rest Nudeln mit Tomatensauce und als Schutz für einen halben Apfel. Alles hat sehr gut funktioniert. Die Kontaktflächen am Fruchtfleisch haben einen Hauch von Bienenwachs angenommen, aber das fand ich nicht störend. Das praktischste ist, dass man das Tuch zwischen zwei Händen quasi verschweißen kann: das Wachs wird warm und dann pappen die Lagen aneinander fest. Natürlich werde ich Frischhaltefolie nie ganz verbannen können: wie sollte ich sonst Zimtsterne backen? Im Umgang mit dem klebrigen Teig hat man nur eine Chance, wenn man ihn zwischen zwei Lagen Frischhaltefolie ausrollt… Habt einen schönen August!
So far, I have used it to wrap a sandwich, to cover half a watermelon to keep in the refrigerator, to cover a bowl with leftover pasta and tomato sauce and to wrap half an apple. And it worked well in all cases. When it came to the fruit, they took on a whiff of bees wax but I didn’t mind that. What I really like about it is the natural cling, if you will: e.g. if you keep the wrapped sandwich between warm hands for a moment, you can actually seal the package as the wax will get warm and act like a glue. Of course, I will never be able to completely ban cling wrap from my house: how should I make cinnamon stars without it, when you need to spread the very sticky dough between two layers of cling wrap??
