Noel Chickens


Wohl wahr: das Farbschema hier, die Küken und die bunten Lichter, die auf dem ersten Blick auch als Konfetti durchgehen könnten, lassen mehr auf Karneval schließen, als auf Weihnachten. Aber das ist einfach so passiert. Hätte ich mich für Rotkehlchen entschieden, wäre das total anders ausgegangen. Aber ich finde, die Karte macht Spaß! Und alles fing an beim neu entdeckten Muse: ChristmasVisions Challenge Blog, wo es einer Inspiration durch eine andere Karte (siehe ganz unten) nachzueifern gilt. Mich inspirierte die Christbaumkugel.

True: the color combo, the chickens and the colored lights (which might come across as confetti at first sight), are more reminiscent of carnival than Christmas. But it just happened. Had I decided on robins, things would have turned out a whole lot differently. But I think this card is a lot of fun! And it all started on the Muse: ChristmasVisions challenge blog that I’ve only recently discovered. Their current challenge is to be inspired by the card of  Stephanie Lanzalotto (see bottom of this post) – the ornament did it for me.

Ja, ich hatte einen Wahnsinnssonntag. Erst der Botanische Garten und dann basteln, basteln, basteln. Und dieser Elch, „Holly Moose“ von Eureka Stamps, hat es mir angetan – und mich dann fast den Verstand gekostet mit diesen ganzen kleinen Blättchen.

Yes, I had one crazy Sunday. First the Botanical Gardens, then crafting, crafting, crafting. And I fell in love with this moose, „Holly Moose“ from Eureka Stamps. And in the end it almost drove me mad with all these tiny leaves to color.

Trio


Nein, hier geht es nicht um Liedtexte (wobei mir jetzt das Da-Da-Da natürlich nicht mehr aus dem Kopf geht), sondern um die laufende ABC Christmas Challenge: T is for Trio. In diesem Fall ein Trio von Bugaboo.

No, this is not about the German band Trio (even though now I can’t get their Da-Da-Da out of my head – of course), but about the ABC Christmas Challenge: T is for Trio. In this case, a trio from Bugaboo.

Einiges an Glitter habe ich verarbeitet – und endlich auch noch mal an meine „glossy accents“ gedacht und die Schnäbel damit bearbeitet.

Quite some glitter was put to use – and some glossy accents, too, which I used on the beaks.

Weihnachtslied und Skizze / Christmas Carol and sketch


Nach dem Morgen im Botanischen Garten habe ich den gestrigen Nachmittag am Basteltisch verbracht. Und hier das erste Ergebnis, mit einem digitalen Stempel von Bugaboo:

Insipiert zu dieser Karte haben mich die Jingle Belles, wo es noch bis Mittwoch um Weihnachtslieder (Oh, Tannenbaum!) geht, aber ich stelle die Karte auch bei den folgenden Challenges ein:

Wunderbarer Herbst / Wonderful fall

Nach dem Dauerregen gestern und dem durch eine dicke Wolkendecke sabotierten Blick auf das Polarlicht über Deutschland war es heute ein wunderbar sonniger Herbsttag und die Entscheidung war nicht schwer: endlich noch mal auf in den Botanischen Garten. Und wer mich kennt, weiß: jetzt kommt eine fette Dosis Fotos und viel Farbe!

Yesterday’s rains finally ended and after we were denied a look at the Northern Lights over Germany because of the heavy cloud cover last night, this morning was downright gorgeous, a wonderfully sunny day in fall. So there was no hesitation: it was high time for a visit at the Botanical Gardens. And those who’ve been around here a little longer know: this post will be picture-heavy and colorful!

Kurz nach 10 war es noch ruhig und ein idealer Ort um in der prallen Sonne das eine oder andere Kapitelchen zu lesen – fast hätte ich mich auf einer Parkbank ausgestreckt. Aber dann wäre ich sicher eingeschlafen und mit dem Teint eines Hummers wieder aufgewacht…

It was still really quiet, shortly after 10 a.m., so it was the ideal place to sit in the sun and read a few chapters. I was very tempted to lie down on one of the benches – but then I would have fallen asleep and would have woken up with the complexion of a lobster…

Wenn man sich gaaaaaanz leise und unbeweglich neben die kleinen Teiche setzt, kann man auch den einen oder anderen Frosch sehen. Wenn man ganz genau guckt. Seht ihr sie auch?

If you sit down reaaaaaally quiet next to the little ponds and stop moving, you can see a frog or two. If you look closely. Can you see them, too?

Doch nun: der übliche Ausklang des Sonntagabends mit einem Krimi! Bis bald.

Rotkehlchen / Robins


Es wird weiter mit Stempeln und Papieren im CAS-Stil (Clean And Simple) experimentiert – und dieser Stempel von Wild Rose Studio ist ganz neu. Den habe ich irgendwo gesehen und MUSSTE ihn haben. Hat sich gelohnt, oder?

I continue to experiment with stamps and papers – and this stamp from Wild Rose Studio is all new. I had seen it somewhere and it was a must have. It was worth the investment, don’t you think?

Auch in den letzten Tagen habe ich noch mit verschiedenen bezahlbaren Papieren experimentiert. Es geht mir darum, gestempelte Motive mit Copics (alkoholbasierten Stiften) zu kolorieren, ohne dass die Farbe durch das Papier „durchblutet“. Dieser Test wurde auf DCP 300g/m² von Clairefontaine gemacht… und es funktioniert, so lange ich ein ganz kleines bisschen vorsichtig bin und nicht zuviel zu vermischen versuche. Vielleicht ist es ja dann auch eher ein Technik- als ein Materialproblem.

Over the past few days, I have been experimenting with different papers. I’m still looking for an affordable paper that I can color with Copis (alcohol-based markers) without the colors bleeding through to the other side. This is the result of a test with DCP 300 gsm from Clairefontaine… and it works as long as I blend with moderation. Maybe in the end it’s more a matter of technique than material.

Das Motiv passt bestens zur neuen Challenge bei Sparkle Christmas Challenges: „Christmas Animals“. Da stelle ich die Karte ein – auch wenn ich vergessen habe, ein Foto der ganzen Karte zu machen. Ich habe nur eins vom ersten Versuch: da habe ich erst nach dem Stempeln festgestellt, dass der Gruß zwei Fehler enthält 😦

I hope it’s not a problem, though, that I forgot to take a picture of the card as a whole… I only took one of the first try: unfortunately, I noticed only after stamping the sentiment that it has two mistakes 😦

Plastic free… September!

Schon wieder ein Monat um – und an der „Kampf gegen das Plastik-Front“ gab es eine weitere Entwicklung. Beim Besuch in Berlin im Juli hatte ich bei meiner Freundin Waschnüsse entdeckt. Sie benutzt sie seit Jahren und war sehr zufrieden damit, also habe ich diesen Versuch gestartet. Auch hier treibt einem die Anschaffung erstmal Tränen in die Augen (19,95€ für ein Kilo beim Waschbär), aber sie sollen ewig halten. Das sehen wir dann. Ich habe gerechnet: es müsste für 120 Wäschen reichen, um gleichviel zu kosten wie mein vorheriges Waschmittel… Man gibt jedenfalls 4-8 halbe Nüsse in einem kleinen Säckchen zur Wäsche. Die Nüssen enthalten Saponin, das reinigend wirkt. Die einzelnen Nüsse kann man 2-3mal verwenden.

Another month has come and gone – and there are new developments in my fight against plactic. When I went to see friends in Berlin in July I noticed that they used soapberries for their laundry. She’s been using them for years and has always been happy with the results so I decided to give them a try, too. As with many things, the initial investment makes your eyes water (19.95€ for 1 kg at Waschbär) but supposedly they last forever. We’ll find out. I did the maths: they would have to last 120 loads not to be more expensive than my previous detergent… You use 4-8 half berries in a little net for one load. They contain saponin which acts as a detergent. You can use the berries two to three times.

Ich bin von den Ergebnissen bislang ebenfalls angetan. Wenn’s hartnäckige Flecken gibt, muss man schon auch noch anderweitig behandeln, aber für die große Menge an Wäsche, die ja eigentlich nicht wirklich dreckig wird, funktioniert das einwandfrei. Gewöhnungsbedürftig fand ich dann nur, dass die Wäsche nach nichts riecht. Die Infos, die mit den Waschnüssen kamen, gaben den Tipp, „einige Tropfen“ bspw. Lavendelöl in die Weichspülkammer zu geben. „Einige“ habe ich als 5-6 interpretiert, mit dem Resultat, dass die Waschküche eine einzige Lavendelwolke war, als ich die Wäsche rausnehmen wollte. Also tun es auch drei Tropfen, was das 7,95€-Lavendelöl auch weiter bringen wird. Wenn ich es überhaupt dauerhaft nutzen will.

I have so far liked how the laundry turned out, too. When there are really tough stains, you need to use some other agent as well but it’s perfectly fine for the great bulk of it – let’s face it: our laundry is not really that dirty to start with. It took some getting used to the fact that the laundry does not smell like artificial lilac or whatever anymore – there is no discernible smell at all. The leaflet that came with the berries said to use „a few drops“ of an essential oil. I got some lavender oil and interpreted „a few“ to mean 5 or 6 – the result being that I walked into a lavender cloud when I returned to the laundry room. So three drops suffice… and the 7.95€ tiny bottle of oil will last a lot longer, too.

Es ist auch gut zu sehen, wann die Nüsse durch sind: auf dem Foto oben ganz links taufrisch, in der Mitte einmal benutzt und rechts dann nach der zweiten Wäsche. Da ist wohl nichts mehr zu holen. Dreimal nutzen finde ich ein bisschen schwierig. In der Summe: ich bleibe dabei und ihr solltet es vielleicht auch mal testen!

You can easily see when the berries are done: on the picture above, there’s an unused one on the left, one after one use in the middle and then one after two loads. Looks like all saponin is gone. So I think using them three times would be stretching it. Anyhow: I will continue to use soapberries and maybe you should give them a try, too!
