Du hast Post! / You’ve got mail!

„E-Mail für dich“ gehört zu meinen Lieblingsfilmen. Jahrelang habe ich ihn nicht mehr gesehen, denn die DVD war hinüber – jetzt habe ich bei Tauschticket.de eine neue eingetauscht. Und dieser generationenübergreifende Dialog sagt es doch alles:

Großvater: „Wir hatten mal ein Rendez-vous… ach ja, vielleicht haben wir auch nur Briefe geschrieben oder so.“
Sohn: „Du hast ihr Briefe geschickt?“
Großvater: „Naja, mit der Post. So war das damals.“
Vater: „Briefmarken, Umschläge…“
Sohn: „Ich hab davon gehört.“

„You’ve Got Mail“ is one of my favorite movies. I hadn’t seen it in years as the DVD was broken – but now I traded in a new one at tauschticket.de. And this dialogue across generations just says it all:

Grandfather: „I think we might have had a date once…maybe we just exchanged letters.“
Son: „You wrote her letters?“
Grandfather: „Well, mail. It was called mail.“
Father: „Stamps, envelopes…“
Son: „You know I’ve heard of it.“


Also: der erste Advent! Wer Weihnachtsgrüße verschicken will, sollte früh genug anfangen – dann gerät man zum Ende hin auch nicht in Stress. Und weil ich die im letzten Jahr begonnene Tradition der Advents-Freebies beibehalten möchte, gibt’s heute praktischerweise das erste.

Adventliche Krise / Advent Crisis

Als ich diesen Cartoon gestern sah, dachte ich: „Ja, das bin ich… Weihnachten ist hier nichts mit Subtilität.“ Das war abends und ich hatte mich erholt, denn die erste adventliche Krise lag bereits hinter mir. Morgens wollte ich einen Baum kaufen. Es waren auch viele da. Aber keiner war groß genug. „Keine Sorge, nächste Woche kriegen wir die wieder rein,“ sagte die rechte Hand des Chefs. Als ich dann antwortete: „Nein! H-E-U-T-E!“ muss er das Entsetzen in meinen Augen gesehen haben, denn er fügte gleich schnell hinzu: „Okay, ich ruf den Chef gleich an, er soll einen mitbringen.“ Der kam dann stark verspätet, so dass ich noch lange nicht mit ihm durch bin…

When I saw this cartoon yesterday I couldn’t help thinking that yes, this is me. Sublety is not one of my strengths when it comes to Christmas. That was late at night and I had already recovered from the first crisis in advent. As usual, I wanted to buy the tree in the morning. And there were truckloads of them. But none was anywhere near tall enough. „Don’t worry, we’ll get more of them next week,“ the guy helping out told me. But when I answered „No! T-O-D-A-Y!“ he must have seen the despair in my eyes and went on to say: „Okay, I’ll call the boss right now and he’ll bring one.“ And it did come but very late so that I’m nowhere near finished with it…

Aber ich konnte es mir dann nicht verkneifen, noch auf den Nikolausmarkt in Beuel zu gehen. Das ist immer eine ziemlich familiäre Angelegenheit – klein, aber gemütlich. So war ich dann auch noch nicht ganz da und bin schon einem Freund und seiner Tochter über den Weg gelaufen… wir hatten uns ewig nicht gesehen. Allein deswegen hat sich das ja dann schon gelohnt.

I absolutely could not pass on going to the St. Nicholas Market in Beuel. It has an almost familial air to it – small but cozy. And so it happened that hadn’t quite arrived yet when I stumbled upon a friend I hadn’t seen in like forever, having a Bratwurst with his daughter. That alone was worth the trip.

Aber das war ja der Stand, für den ich eigentlich gekommen war. Holzschmuck in der Weihnachtszeit hat immer was… und hier gab es unter anderem Elche 🙂

But this was the booth I had come for. I love wooden ornaments and such at Christmas… and here mooses were to be had 🙂

Wenn ich mir das Foto jetzt ansehe, frage ich mich, warum ich mich eigentlich für die zweidimensionale Variante entschieden habe… der ist doch wohl wunderschön, oder?

When I look at this picture now I wonder why I decided on the 2-dimensional version… this one here is a beauty, isn’t he?

Tja, und die kleinen Lebkuchenhäuschen haben mich daran erinnert, dass ich so ein Projekt ja auch immer mal angehen wollte… nächstes Jahr!

These little gingerbread houses reminded me that I have always wanted to make one… next year!

Ging nicht anders / How could I not?


Seit gestern habe ich eine neue Dose. Eine Plätzchendose, ganz klar. Die musste ich haben, ging nicht anders. Nicht, dass ich nicht schon geschätzte 27 hätte, aber Plätzchendosen hat man ja nie genug, zu dieser Jahreszeit. Und da ich sie schonmal hatte, musste sie ja auch gefüllt werden, klar. Ging nicht anders.

I got a new tin yesterday. A tin for biscuits – very obviously. I just had to get it – how could I not? It’s not like I didn’t have about 27 other biscuit tins but you can never have enough of them, now can you? Especially at this time of year. And now that I had it, I needed to fill it, right. How could I not?

Um die Aktion noch ein klein wenig zu rechtfertigen, habe ich ein neues Rezept ausprobiert, das ich in Ländlicher Weihnachtstraum gefunden hatte: gefülltes Aprikosengebäck. Bei näherer Betrachtung war das Rezept deutlich verbesserungsbedürftig, aber letztlich kam was essbares dabei raus.

As I had to find a reason for this early advent activity, I decided to try a new recipe that I’d found in a new book on Christmas decorations, recipes etc. (in German): apricot biscuits. After I’d had a closer look at the recipe it was obvious it needed some… adjustments but the end result was okay.

Ja, ich denke, so kann’s weitergehen… nur noch 37 Tage, ich fass‘ es nicht. Habt einen guten Start in die Woche.

Yes, I think things can continue down this avenue… only 37 days to go, I can’t believe it. Have a good start into the week.

Männerkarte / One for the boys


Die Karte ist schon ein paar Tage alt, aber ich komme heute endlich – und gerade noch rechtzeitig – dazu, sie für die Challenge bei Winter Wonderland zu posten: es soll eine Karte für Männer sein.

The card is a couple of days old but today I finally get to post it – just in time for the challenge over at Winter Wonderland. It’s supposed to be a card about men – which I interpret as „for men“.

Ich halte mich ja schon grundsätzlich für den im Vergleich eher schmucklosen Bastler und auch, wenn der Baum hier ziemlich verschnörkelt ist, so geht es mir doch um die Geradlinigkeit der Fliesen im Hintergrund.

I’m by nature a crafter whose output is rather unembellished by comparison and even if this little tree is pretty ornamental, I find the tile-like background much less girlie… and the fact that it contrasts sharply with the tree only adds to that. I think 😉

Einfarbig / Monochromatic

Bevor ich hier thematisch in die Challenge der UnstampaBelles einsteige, wo es diesmal darum geht, eine einfarbige Karte zu basteln, muss ich das mal loswerden: Leute, ihr seid der reine Wahnsinn! Vom Adventskranz in a box sind bereits 43 Exemplare unters Volk gekommen – ich bin begeistert! Und es ist noch nicht mal Mitte November… VIELEN DANK – und weiter so!

Before I get right into the current challenge over at the UnstampaBelles which is „monochromatic“ I have to tell you this: guys, you are amazing! An incredible 43 Advent Wreaths in a Box are already sold – I’m stunned! And it’s not even mid-November yet… Thanks so much – and keep it up!

Aufgrund der Massenbestellungen bastele ich momentan nicht viel anderes als kleine Boxen, aber zu dieser Karte hat es dann doch noch gereicht. Engel sind ja nicht meins, aber irgendwie hatte mich dieser doch angesprochen.

Due to the mass orders I don’t get to make much else but little boxes these days but I did manage to make this card, too. I’m not really into angels but somehow this did speak to me.

Und nun… mehr Adventskränze! 🙂

V is for Vibrant Colors

Morgen ist Feiertag, Freitag habe ich frei genommen… es fühlt sich gut an! Und eben kam sogar noch der Handwerker, der sich eines nervigen Problems annehmen soll: die neuen Mieter in der Wohnung unter mir sind Raucher – und offenbar waren alle in den 10 Jahren vorher Nichtraucher. In der Folge ist mein wunderbar renoviertes Schlafzimmer immer wieder eine Raucherbar. Mehrere Nächte wurden schon im Wohnzimmer verbracht. Er wird in der anderen Wohnung arbeiten und hat aller Voraussicht nach schon in 9 Tagen Zeit dafür…

Tomorrow is a holiday here and I took Friday off…it feels good! And the „skilled worker“ who is going to deal with an annoying problem here also just left after checking out the situation: the new tenants in the apartment below mine are smokers – and apparently all others in the 10 years prior to their move-in weren’t. For the past weeks my wonderfully re-done bedroom has become a smokers‘ club. There were a few nights spent on the sofa already. Anyhow, there’s good news: he will tackle the problem in THEIR apartment and if all goes well he’ll start on it in little more than a week…

Aber es wird immer eine neue Challenge geben (was für ein Wortspiel!) und die laufende bei ABC Christmas Challenge kommt mir gerade recht: leuchtende Farben! Das wunderbare Band oben habe ich im März auf der Creativa gefunden – ich hätte zwar nicht damit gerechnet, es für eine Weihnachtskarte zu verwenden, aber so ist es!

But there will always be a challenge (what a pun!) and the current one at ABC Christmas Challenge is V is for Vibrant Colors. I found the cute ribbon above at the Creativa fair back in March – and wouldn’t thought I’d use it on a Christmas card but there you go!

Die Farben sind leuchtender, als sie hier rauskommen… egal! Heute war ich auch nochmal bei meinem ersten Schlaglochgarten-Projekt und Überraschung: die Pflanzen waren alle noch eingepflanzt, das Moos jedoch war weg. Hm. Vielleicht weggeflogen? Wie auch immer: schönen Feiertag und auf bald!

The colors are more vibrant in real life… oh well. Today I also checked how my first project in pothole gardening was faring and surprise: the plants were all still there – just the moss was gone. Mmh. Maybe a gust of wind took it? Anyhow, have a nice holiday tomorrow (should there be one where you are) and see you soon!

Spiel mit der Tradition / Playing with tradition

Unerwartet habe ich einen Abend allein zuhause – und bin fast überfordert. Aus Verzweiflung habe ich schon meinen Basteltisch aufgeräumt 😉 Um mich dann mit voller Wucht der Oktober-Challenge bei CCAYR zu widmen: ein traditionelles Weihnachtsmotiv in nicht-traditionellen Farben oder traditionelle Farben mit einem nicht-typischen Weihnachtsmotiv.

I am „home alone“ unexpectedly – and am almost unable to cope. Out of sheer desperation I have even reinstated order in my creative nook 😉 But then I dove right into the October challenge over at CCAYR: to use non-traditional colors with a Christmas motive or traditional colors with an unusual motive.

Sorry für das üble Foto, aber ohne Tageslicht ist meine Fotoausrüstung überfordert… besser geht’s nicht. Babyblaue Karte und eine „traditionelle“ Schneeflocke in schrillem Metallic orange, auf dem Katalogbild eines gewebten Teppichs.

I apologize for the bad quality of the picture but my photo equipment is not up to the task when there’s no daylight… this is as good as it gets. A „baby blue“ card with a „traditional“ snowflake in bright metallic orange, with the picture of a woven carpet from a catalogue.

Anders / Different

Die Schneeinspiration aus Nordkanada hat gewirkt: bei Winter Wonderland heißt es in dieser Woche „alles, nur keine Karte.“ Also mal ganz was anderes 😉

Den Papp-Rohling habe ich bei Das Bastelhäuschen aufgetan und den Martha Stewart Glitter hatte ich schon ein Weilchen… endlich hat es ZOOM gemacht…

I found the cardboard candle holder at Das Bastelhäuschen and I’d had the Martha Stewart glitter for quite a while already… and finally it clicked.

Na, jetzt wo ich die Großaufnahme auf dem Bildschirm habe sehe ich, dass ich wohl noch einen kleinen Fehler ausgleichen muss. Wie auch immer: bis die Tage!

Well, now that I see the close-up on the screen I realize I need to apply a little finishing touch there… Anyhow, see you around!

U is for Up To You


Wunderbar! Eine Challenge, bei der ich endlich diese niedlichen Lebkuchenmänner unterbringen kann: bei ABC Christmas Challenge geht es in der laufenden Runde ganz nach mir. Schon vor einer ganzen Weile habe ich sie im Pink Cat Studio von Melissa aufgetan.

Wonderful! A challenge where I can finally use these adorable gingerbread men. Over at ABC Christmas Challenge the motto is: U is for Up To You. I had found the little guys a while ago at Melissa’s Pink Cat Studio.
