Sundowner

Am vergangenen Freitag war ich am Ende einer Woche angekommen, die mich aus nicht wirklich greifbaren Gründen davonlaufen lassen wollte. Kurzentschlossen habe ich mich auf’s Fahrrad geschwungen und bin mit Lesestoff ausgestattet auf den Hömmerich gefahren, um den Sonnenuntergang zu genießen. Ich kam auch noch rechtzeitig, um die große Aussichtsliege („Hangsofa“) zu ergattern.

This past Friday I had reached the end of a week that somehow had made me want to run away. I can’t put my finger on why that was exactly. Anyhow, it was a spontaneous decision to grab a couple of magazines and get on my bike to go to Hömmerich (hill) to enjoy the sunset. And I was in time to lay claim to the large lounge chair with a view.

Es war so ein Abend, an dem sich alle zwei Minuten extrem was tut am Himmel – und nachdem der eine National Geographic ausgelesen war, musste ich dazu noch im Gebüsch und anderswo rumkriechen und Flora ablichten.

It was one of those nights where the sky changes dramatically about every other minute – and after I had finished reading one issue of the National Geographic, I just had to get up and crawl around in the undergrowth and elsewhere to take pictures of the flora.

Ich hätte meine Freundin Jo aus Utah dabei haben müssen, die sich erst sehr kürzlich als Fan von Löwenzahn geoutet hat. Das war die richtige Jahreszeit am richtigen Ort – einer von vielen in dieser Gegend – um diesem Gewächs zu frönen.

I wished I’d had my frined Jo from Utah over who very recently outed herself as a devoted fan of dandelions. This is the season and the right spot – as so many are in this area – to enjoy that flower.

So richtig gut konnte meine Kamera nicht mit der tiefer stehenden Sonne umgehen (oder ich mit der Kamera, wer weiß) – so streifig sah sie gar nicht aus. Oder aber die Kamera sah mehr, als das menschliche Auge erfassen kann…

My camera had an ever harder time dealing with the sun the lower it got (or maybe it was me having a hard time with the camera, who knows) – it never had stripes in real life. Or maybe the camera saw more than was visible for the human eye. Deep…

Und da hier nun die Arbeitswoche dankenswerterweise bereits an diesem Donnerstag ein gnädiges Ende findet, dachte ich, ich schicke euch mit Grüßen vom Ende eines Tages die Grüße zum Ende eines Monats. Morgen ist Mai! Kann das jemand glauben? Ich stehe immer noch im März, gefühlt.

Thankfully, the work week had mercy on us and has come to an early end (tomorrow’s Labor Day being a holiday in Germany) and I thought I send you a hello from the end of a day for the end of the month. Tomorrow’s May 1st! Can you believe that? I feel I’m still stuck in March somehow.
