Save the Frogs Day

Gestern war ein Tag, der ein ganz wunderbares Ende gefunden hat. Das Wetter war fantastisch und da der Botanische Garten nun ja auch wieder bis 18 Uhr geöffnet ist, war es der ideale Tag für einen Besuch. Mit einem Eis (Holunder!). Und wahrscheinlich eine der letzten Chancen, meine geliebten Rhododendren zu bewundern.

Yesterday was a day that turned out to have a happy ending. The weather was gorgeous and now that the Botanical Gardens are open until 6pm again I jumped at the opportunity. Ice-cream included (elderberry!). And it was probably about the last chance to have a look at „my“ rhodies.

Auch wenn die Blüten ja eigentlich jedes Jahr gleich aussehen, kann ich euch doch einige Nahaufnahmen nicht ersparen. Die Farben!

Even if the blooms should look about the same every year I couldn’t possibly deny you a look at some close-ups. The colors!

Und noch einige mehr kamen raus, um Sonne zu tanken – die einen auf den heißen Steinen…

And there were others coming out to enjoy the sunshine – some sitting on the hot rocks…

… die anderen guckten aus dem Wasser und waren auch schon vor Sonnenuntergang in intensive Konzerte vertieft. Und weil heute tatsächlich Save the Frogs Day ist, habe ich dazu auch eine Collage!

… while the others came to the surface to give their concerts, even before the sun went down. And because today really is Save the Frogs Day, I decided to make a whole collage of them!

Am kleinen Teich war ich schon fast im „nimm die Hände da raus, das ist kein Spielplatz“-Modus, aber der etwa 8-jährige hatte mich schnell in seinen Bann gezogen, indem er mir die Welt der Molche erklärt hat und der Wasserschnecken und Frösche sowieso. Und den Spruch „Gucken ja, fangen nein“ brachte dann die ansonsten freundliche Dame der Gartenaufsicht auf dem Fahrrad…

At the small pond I had almost reached the „get your hands out of there, this is not a playground“ mode but the about 8-year old in question had soon won me over explaining the adventurous world of newts and aquatic snails and frogs of course. The friendly lady ranger on her bike then did the „Looking yes, catching no“ routine when she came by…

Aber die schönen Erlebnisse waren ja noch nicht vorbei, denn einmal zuhause angekommen fand ich in meinem Briefkasten einen dicken Umschlag „Happy Mail“. Das Glückslos bei Ros war auf mich gefallen und ich habe dringend notwendige 😉 Bastelutensilien bekommen, zusammen mit einer wunderschönen selbst gemachten Karte. DANKE!

But this day had another surprise in store for me. When I got home I found a thick padded envelope in my mailbox, happy mail. I was the lucky winner of Ros‘ birthday celebrations for CCCB and I so I received urgently needed 😉 crafts supplies, accompanied by a wonderful handmade card. THANKS!

Ostern in der Eifel / Easter in the Eifel

Ostern ist fast schon vorbei… da ist es doch erfreulich, dass wenigstens nur eine verkürzte Arbeitswoche vor uns liegt. Ich hoffe, ihr hattet ein schönes, vor allem nicht zu stressiges Fest – und habt auch etwas Sonne abgekriegt. Das hatte die Eifel erstaunlicherweise und entgegen aller Wettervorhersagen an drei von vier Tagen zu bieten. In der Folge habe ich fast sowas wie Bräune vorzuweisen 🙂

Easter is almost over (and we lucky ducks in Germany have Monday off, too – it’s also a holiday)… and I so look forward to the fact that the upcoming work week is shortenened accordingly. I hope you all had a nice and not too hectic weekend – and maybe also saw some sun wherever you were. The Eifel had surprisingly much of that in store for us – and contrary to all forecasts on three of four days. I even got something like a tan!

Jaaa… die Fotos belegen das nicht unbedingt. Die sind vom Ostersonntag und das war der einzige eher graue Tag. Aber auf unserem kleinen Spaziergang auf der Wirftbachtal-Schleife (HIER ein schöner Bericht über die ganze Strecke – lesenswert!), die uns in so erstaunliche Gemarkungen wie den Suddelpösch brachte, war das weniger störend. Die Löwenzahn-Invasion, grell leuchtende Rapsfelder und die verschiedensten Grün- und Weißtöne in den Baumkronen waren mir Farbe genug.

Well, I do realize that these pictures aren’t really proof of that. They were taken Easter Sunday and that was the only day in gray. But we weren’t faced by that on our stroll through several parts around Barweiler. The dandelion invasion, very bright canola fields in full bloom and all kinds of different greens and whites in the treetops were all the color I needed.

Und natürlich hätte ich nach diesem Wochenende auch genug Fotomaterial für das Stichwort „Eier“ bei Our Beautiful World gehabt. Aber nun ja, so werden sie „einfach so“ verewigt.

And of course I would have more than enough material to participate in Our Beautiful World’s EGGS prompt from a couple of weeks ago. Oh well, I’ll post them „just like that“ 😉

Ich hege nicht unbegründete Hoffnung, dass ihr bald wieder mehr von mir hört. Es könnte sein, dass ich mal ein bisschen runterkomme in den nächsten Wochen (klopf auf Holz) und da mein Netbook-Problem mit einer Neuanschaffung nun auch gelöst ist (man hat ja sonst nichts zu tun)… und ich nur einen halben Abend brauchte, um rauszufinden, wie man den Rechner in Windows 8 abschaltet oder eben sicher 30 Minuten, um rauszufinden, wie ich ein Programm, das (noch) kein Icon auf dem Desktop hat, aufgerufen werden kann… also, jedenfalls bin ich vorsichtig optimistisch, dass das was wird. Wird auch Zeit! Habt eine schöne Woche!

I’m quite hopeful that I’ll be around more often again now. Maybe I get a chance to wind down a bit in the upcoming weeks (knock on wood) and as I solved my netbook problem with a purchase of a new one (as if I hadn’t had enough other things on my plate)… and I only needed half an evening to find out how to switch it off in Windows 8 or just a moment ago about half an hour to find out how to start a program that does not have an icon on the desktop (yet)… anyhow, I remain optimistic, to some extent. Die neue / The new Beethoven Statue

Diese Bilder sind ungefähr zwei Wochen alt, aber, auch wenn die Blüten mittlerweile wohl alle weg sind, sie sehen noch so wunderbar frühlingshaft aus. Sie sind entstanden bei der kurzen Besichtigung der neuen Beethoven-Statue in der Nähe des Alten Zolls in Bonn.

These pictures are a couple of weeks old but – even though the bloom is almost gone by now – they have this wonderful spring feeling to them. I took them when I went to see the new Beethoven statue near Alter Zoll here in Bonn with a few friends.

Es wurde schon viel darüber geredet… und beim ersten Blick darauf in der Lokalzeit des WDR konnte ich nicht sagen, dass ich besonders begeistert gewesen wäre. Live war es dann schon ein bisschen was anderes – kann es nur am Frühling gelegen haben?

It has been much discussed already… and when I first saw it in a report on the local TV station I couldn’t say I very much liked it. It was a bit different in real life, though – and it couldn’t have been just because it was such a gorgeous day?

Es schien mir, als seien ALLE draußen unterwegs – gegrillt wurde auch. Es war ein richtig lauer Sommerabend, den wir abends gegen 22 Uhr im T-Shirt dann noch mit einem Eis abgeschlossen haben.

It seems that everybody was out and about – there was also barbecuing going on. It was a really warm summer’s night and we parted at about 10pm, the coats losely on our arms and eating a wonderful Italian ice-cream.

Afternoon Tea

„Hallo!… Hallo!… Hallo, warten Sie mal!“ Daraufhin drehte ich mich vor einigen Wochen mal um, auf meiner samstagmorgendlichen Einkaufstour durch Poppelsdorf. Atemlos: „Sie waren das doch, für die ich im Dezember diesen fünfarmigen Leuchter geschmückt habe, oder?“ Ja, das war ich, für den Downton Abbey-inspirierten Kaffeeklatsch. Das mag ich an Poppelsdorf. Die Friseurin winkt über einer Dauerwelle, im Edeka kann ich auch mal (kurzzeitig) das Portemonnaie vergessen haben, der Pizzabäcker von nebenan nimmt an mich adressierte Pakete entgegen…

„Hello!… Hello!… Hello, please wait a second!“ That’s when I finally turned around on my ususal Saturday morning shopping spree in the neighborhood. Breathless: „It was you alright, wasn’t it, who I did the decoration on that five-armed candleholder for back in December?“ Yes, that was me, for my Downton Abbey-inspired coffeeklatsch. That’s what I like about my Poppelsdorf neighborhood. The hairdresser waves through the window, at the supermarket it’s okay if you forgot your purse, the pizza chef next door will accept packages addressed to me…

Immer noch atemlos: „Eine Freundin hat mir von einem Café in Rheinbach erzählt. Die machen da immer mittwochs so einen Afternoon Tea – da habe ich gleich an Sie gedacht! Ich hab vergessen wie das heißt, aber das kann man bestimmt googlen.“ Ja, das kann man: es heißt Café Silberlöffel und eigentlich im wahren Leben schnell gefunden – wenn man sich nicht davon verwirren lässt, dass im Erdgeschoss ein Geschäft für Wohnaccessoires zu finden ist, Stilvoll-IK. Die gehören zusammen. Es war jedenfalls ein sehr guter Tipp…

Still breathless: „A friend told me about a café in Rheinbach. Every Wednesday they have one these „afternoon teas“ – and that’s when I thought of you! I forgot what it’s called but I’m sure you can google it.“ Yes, you can: it’s called Café Silberlöffel (silver spoon) and can easily be found – that is if you don’t let yourself get confused by the fact that there’s a boutique on the first floor, Stilvoll-IK (they go together). Well, it was a great tip…

Wir waren mit Baby unterwegs und auch, wenn es vom Zugang her nicht gerade barrierefrei ist (Treppe in den ersten Stock und ziemlich eng, Kinderwagen ist keine Option… aber eben gemütlich!), so war es doch absolut (kleinst-)kinderfreundlich. Mit rumlaufenden Kindern ist es vielleicht nicht ganz so gut – da kann einiges kaputt gehen. Und ach ja… das Essen. Oben schon die nette Etagere entdeckt?? Mal näher betrachten??

We had a baby with us and even if access is not exactly easy (stairs to the second floor and quite narrow, too, taking a stroller is not an option… but GEMÜTLICHKEIT is the word here!), it was definitely a baby-friendly place. Maybe not for toddlers running around – there are quite a few things that can break! And oh yes… the food. Did you notice that nice étagère above?? Would you like to have a closer look??

Herzhaft im unteren Stockwerk, süß im oberen, dazu frisch gebackene Scones (noch warm!) mit selbst gemachter Erdbeermarmelade und clotted cream – ein Gedicht! Schade, dass es nicht auch am Wochenende stattfindet, dann würde ich bestimmt öfter auftauchen. Naja, in Sachen Kalorien ist es besser so! Bis bald!

Savory on the lower level, sweet on the upper level, add to that freshly baked scones (still warm!) with homemade strawberry jam and clotted cream – excellent! What a shame that they don’t offer this on the weekend, too – I could become a regular there. Well, I guess the Wednesday schedule is better when I think about the calories! Take care!

Kanalisation / Sewerage System

Am gleichen Tag, als ich das wunderbare Blütenfoto aus dem letzten Eintrag gemacht habe (also letzten Samstag), waren wir auch, im Rahmen der Feierlichkeiten zum 40. Geburtstag eines Freundes, auf Entdeckungstour… in der Kölner Kanalisation. Und irgendwie schien es mir nicht passend, das dann auch in den gleichen Eintrag zu bringen!

On the day I took the picture of the gorgeous blooms from my last post (that is, last Saturday), we also went to see a part of the Cologne sewerage system – part of the festivities on the occasion of the 40th birthday of a friend. Somehow, I didn’t think the blooms and the sewerage system would go well together.

Bei der etwa 20-minütigen Besichtigung ging es hauptsächlich um den Kronleuchtersaal, der 1890 mit zweien dieser Leuchtobjekte ausgestattet wurde, da Kaiser Wilhelm II. sich angekündigt hatte. Heute gibt es nur noch einen Leuchter und der ist ein, wenn auch originalgetreuer, Nachbau.

We were down there for about 20 minutes and it was mainly about the Chandelier Hall – which was outfitted with two such light fixtures in 1890 when Emperor Wilhelm II. was expected to attend the opening. Today there is only one chandelier left which is a remake.

Wegen des guten Wetters, so wurde gesagt, war der Abfluss eher bescheiden, aber nichtsdestotrotz war das ganze ein ziemlich abgefahrenes Ensemble. Und beim Blick in die hellbraune Brühe war der Gedanke an das vorangegangene Mittagessen im Currywurst-Restaurant komisch passend. (Davon abgesehen war das Mittagessen gut – meine erste Bison-Currywurst und die Pommes mit Mango-Chili-Mayo waren mal eine Abwechslung!).

Due to the good weather, or so we were told, the volume of the sewage was moderate but in all still made for a bizarre ensemble. Looking at the brown water somehow strangely reminded a few of us of the lunch we’d had at a currywurst restaurant. (Currywurst is a German specialty: a grilled sausage cut in bitesize pieces and covered in a sauce of ketchup and curry, usually served with French fries and mayonnaise. Apart from the strange associations we had down there, lunch had been fabulous – my first bison currywurst and the French fries had an interesting mango-chili-mayonnaise).

Manchmal finden dort unten auch Konzerte statt – das folgende Foto habe ich beim A Roma Quartett gefunden. Da kann man ja gleich mal gucken, wann man das mal erleben kann…

Sometimes there are concerts down there – I’ve found the picture below on the website of A Roma Quartett. I might have a look when it’s possible to be part of that experience…

Aber für mich hat es eigentlich schon an Faszination gereicht, dass dieser ganze „Raum“ und die dazugehörigen Tunnel in passendem Maßstab bei starken Regenfällen komplett unter Wasser stehen. Dann geht das nicht mehr nur durch den Kanal mit der braunen Suppe, sondern alles wird ausgefüllt und selbst der Kronleuchter ist unter Wasser. In solchen Fällen geht das dann gleich durch die geöffneten Tore unten in den Rhein. Diese Tore werden wiederum geschlossen, wenn der Rhein Hochwasser führt. Nein… nicht manuell, wie jemand fragte.

But the fact that this whole „room“ and the respective tunnels of matching scale will be totally drowned during heavy rains, chandelier included, held enough fascination for me already. The canal with the brown soup alone doesn’t stand a chance then. In these cases the water will flow through the gates below directly into the Rhine. These flood gates in turn will be closed when the Rhine runs high. No… not manually, as someone wondered.
