Nach meinem Tag in Stralsund habe ich mich in einen Zug gesetzt und bin nach einer knappen Stunde in Rostock angekommen – und nur noch in mein Hotelbett gefallen. Am nächsten Morgen ging es aber dann los auf Erkundung!

After my great day in Stralsund I took a train to Rostock which I reached after less than an hour. Once there, I basically only crashed on my hotel bed. But on the next morning I was ready for more!

Der Besuch war nicht so gut geplant, und so war es eine schöne Überraschung festzustellen, dass das Hotel richtig nah an der Altstadt lag. Der Neue Markt (oben) war schon ein farbenfroher Einstieg… das Rathaus dort war leider eingerüstet und nicht zu sehen. Dafür war die Universität nicht weit:

I hadn’t planned that day in Rostock all that well and so it was a nice surprise to notice that the hotel was located close to the old town. The New Market Square (above) made for another colorful start of the day… Unfortunately, the city hall was covered in scaffolding. But the university wasn’t far off:

Neben ziemlich langen Stücken mittelalterlicher Stadtmauer hat auch Rostock noch ein paar Stadttore aufzuweisen, hier das Steintor. (Ich habe u.a. auch gelernt, dass die Stadttore zum Wasser hin im Mittelalter eher zu vernachlässigen waren… denn es war unvorstellbar, dass von See her ein Angriff erfolgen würde).

In addition to rather large parts of the medieval city wall Rostock still has a few of the city gates standing as well, see Stone Gate below. (I have also learned that in the Middle Ages the gates facing the sea were neglected by comparison as an attack from sea was inconceivable).

Nicht weit davon entfernt steht das Ständehaus – heute beherbergt es das Oberlandesgericht. Es muss auch im Innern ganz toll sein, aber ich kam nicht rein.

Very close by there’s the house of the estates – today it houses the Higher Regional Court. The interior must be gorgeous, too, but I couldn’t get inside.

Ein detailreich verziertes Kaufmannhaus ist das Kerkhoffhaus, gebaut ca. 1470 – irgendwann werde ich doch wieder eine bessere Kamera mitnehmen, zum zoomen.

The Kerkhoff House is an intricately decorated house of a merchant, built around 1470. It was one of those moments when I was regretting that I hadn’t taken a better camera with me, to get better close-ups.

Eine weltlich genutzte Kirche (gab’s auch eine in Stralsund, mit Martinsmarkt – aber ich konnte unmöglich über alles berichten!) hat mich fasziniert… am Hauptportal eine riesige Klingelleiste und unterm Dach:

I was fascinated by a church with profane use (there was one in Stralsund already, Martin’s Market on-going inside – but I couldn’t possibly tell you about everything!)… there was a huge board with electric bells by the main portal and then underneath the roof:

In der Marienkirche fand ich meinen Beitrag für Our Beautiful World diese Woche, da geht es um Halloween…

I felt quite halloweenish in St. Mary’s when I saw this altar – and decided it’s my entry at Our Beautiful World this week which is about Halloween!
