Leider war der Rügenaufenthalt am Freitagmorgen schon zuende – aber ich hatte mir noch zwei Stops für die Rückfahrt eingeplant. In Stralsund kam ich um 9:00 Uhr an und bin dann 8 Stunden voller Begeisterung durch die Altstadt getigert. Soviel Farbe!

Unfortunately, my stay on Rügen ended on Friday morning already – but I had already planned two more stops on my way home. I reached Stralsund at 9 am and then walked all over its old town for 8 hours. So much color!

Und ich erspare euch – erstmal! – weitere Türen 😉 Stralsund hat ungefähr 58.000 Einwohner und wurde 2002 in die Welterbeliste der UNESCO aufgenommen. Nach einem leckeren Latte am Alten Markt, habe ich mir in der Touri-Info eine Broschüre mit zwei Rundgängen besorgt und losgelegt, direkt an Ort und Stelle mit dem Rathaus, einem wunderbaren Beispiel der sog. Backsteingotik. Vom Alten Markt sieht man die Schaufassade (unten links oben). Der Eingang ist, gefühlt, an der Seite und wenn man ihn durchschreitet kommt man in die Halle, die auf den dem Foto unten rechts zu sehen ist.

I’ll spare you – for the time being – more doors 😉 Stralsund has a population of about 58,000 and was awarded UNESCO World Heritage status in 2002. After I had a lovely latte on the Old Market Square, I got a great brochure at the tourist information that sent me on two self-guided tours there and then, starting with the town hall – a prime example of the so-called Brick Gothic. From the Old Market Square you see the „Show facade“ (see upper left below). The entrance is on the side of the building, or so it feels, and when you walk in there you get into a hall – pictured on the picture below on the lower right.

Direkt daneben steht die Kirche St. Nikolai – einmal durch’s Rathaus durch und man steht vor dem (jetzt verschlossenen) Hauptportal. Aber betreten kann man sie trotzdem, an der anderen Seite. Und sie hat mich ziemlich vom Hocker gehauen. Erstens: noch mehr Farbe! Zweitens: ich kam mir direkt wie ins Mittelalter katapultiert vor – sie wird wunderbar restauriert… sucht aber noch Unterstützer für ein neues Dach. Falls jemand die nicht gezahlte Kirchensteuer noch unterbringen will oder so…

Right next to it stands the St. Nikolai Church – just walk straight through the town hall and you reach the main portal (now locked). But you can still enter it on the other side. And it really knocked me off my socks. First of all: more color! Then also: I felt I had been time-warped into the Middle Ages – it’s being restored beautifully… but is still looking for supporters for its roof. So just in case you were looking for a good cause anyway…

Am gleichen Platz steht das Wulflamhaus – ein eindrucksvolles Beispiel eines kaufmännischen Wohnsitzes in Mittelalter, gebaut um 1350. Man kann auch reingehen und sich zumindest im Erdgeschoss einen Eindruck davon verschaffen, wie solche Häuser aufgebaut waren.

On that same square you can find the Wulflam House – an impressive example of a residential building of a wealthy merchant in the Middle Ages, built about 1350. You can also go inside and get an idea of how it was set up (at least on the ground floor).

Noch mehr Farbe gibt’s im Bereich des St. Johanniskloster zu bewundern.

Das Scheelehaus besteht aus zwei ursprünglich getrennten Häusern, die nun verbunden sind. Sie waren hauptsächlich Lagerhäuser, waren aber auch bewohnt. Seinen Namen hat das Haus nach Carl Wilhelm Scheele, der 1742 dort geboren wurde… und durch die Entdeckung des Sauerstoffs bekannt wurde. Wie ich jetzt weiß.

The Scheele House used to be two separate houses that have been connected. They were mainly used as storage houses but also had living quarters. It got its name after Carl Wilhelm Scheele who was born there in 1742… and later became famous for the discovery of oxygen. As I now know.

Das Heilgeistkloster ist auch ein faszinierender Komplex. Durch das Tor durch und gleich rechts gelangt man in das Spitalgebäude, wo man den Kirchgang findet, gebildet aus zwei zweigeschossigen Langhäusern. Gerne hätte ich mir mal eine Wohnung angesehen…

The Heilgeist Monastery is also a fascinating complex. After you enter through the gate you find a door to your right that leads you to the hospital building: two parallel two-storey longhouses. I would have loved to have a look at one of the apartments…

Nach einer neuen Art der Pause – ich war spontan beim Friseur – kam ich zum Museumshaus in der Mönchstraße. Hochinteressant. Hier kann man wirklich im Detail sehen, wie so ein Lager- und Wohnhaus funktioniert hat… über Stiegen kommt man bis ganz oben in den Spitzgiebel, wo das Aufzugsrad steht, mit dem die Waren durch einen Schacht über die Stockwerke transportiert wurden.

After I had tested a new kind of break – I spontaneously had my hair cut – I reached the „museum house“ in Mönchstraße. Highly interesting. You can see in detail how such a storange and residential house worked… You can reach all the way up into the pointed gable if you don’t mind the ladders. Up there, you’ll find the wheel by which the prodcuts were transported to the different floors via a shaft.

Stralsund hatte mal 10 Stadttore. Zwei davon sind noch erhalten – hier das Kütertor.

Stralsund used to have 10 city gates. Two still exist – this is the Küter Gate.

Ich hatte das Gefühl, dass so gut wie jedes Haus eine jahrhundertelange Geschichte hat – man weiß gar nicht, wo man zuerst hingucken soll. Und auch wenn nicht, viele sind einfach schön.

I felt that almost every house had a centuries old history – you really don’t know where to look first. And if not, they are just beautiful.

In einer der Kirchen, ich weiß nicht mehr, in welcher (wahrscheinlich in der Marienkirche), war eine Art Klagemauer aufgebaut… und ich musste schon grinsen, als ich dieses Dankgebet gelesen habe.

In one of the churches, I forgot which (probably St. Mary’s), was a sort of wailing wall… and I did have to smile when I read this little prayer of thanks.
