Dieses Jahr konnte ich Nahuel und Malen, zwei Mapuche aus Chile, gewinnen, den Basar zugunsten des Elisabeth-Hospiz in Lohmar zu unterstützen. Es ist wieder soweit! Die zwei sind noch etwas nervös (schließlich suchen sie auch eine neue Herberge), aber begeistert vom diesjährigen Angebot, für das sage und schreibe über 20 Leute in unterschiedlicher Art und Weise aktiv geworden sind. Holt euch ’nen Kaffee – das Angebot ist wirklich gigantisch und ich bin noch in Sorge, ob man irgendwo technisch an Grenzen stößt, was die Größe eines einzigen Blogbeitrags angeht…

When I met Nahuel and Malen, two Mapuche from Chile, they were ready to support the fundraiser for the Elisabeth Hospice in Lohmar, no questions asked. It’s that time of year again! The couple are still a little nervous (they are looking for a new place to stay, too, by the way) but are amazed at the range of products that are on sale this year. More than 20 people helped me put this together in different ways, can you believe it? Go get a coffee – there’s a truly gigantic range of creations this year and at this point I still wonder whether I will run into technical difficulties because maybe there’s a limit to how large one single blog post can be…

Endlich können wir so richtig einen auf hygge machen – oder traditionell auf gemütlich. Denkt euch Tee, Kerzenschimmer und leckere Plätzchen… und dazu ein Paar fetzige warme Stricksocken – ab auf die Couch und den Lieblingsweihnachtsfilm eingelegt! Es hat mir eine große Freude bereitet, mich um diese Socken zu kümmern – im Laufe des Jahres habe ich auch Dank nebenan.de ein Sockenstrickerimperium aufgebaut – neben Freunden und Kollegen fanden sich auch bis dahin unbekannte Menschen, die einfach mal so dieser Wahnsinnigen aus Poppelsdorf glaubten, dass sie Stricker für den guten Zweck sucht (verkauft werden sie für 18 Euro pro Paar). Und dann haben die gestrickt. Und gestrickt. UND GESTRICKT! Fangen wir mal an mit dem Modell Johanna – so perfekt möchte ich mit 90 Jahren auch noch IRGENDWAS machen können, wie diese Socken:

Think tea, candlelight and yummy cookies… and add to that a pair of fancy warm knitted socks – hop on the couch and watch your favorite Christmas movie! It has been fun, a true pleasure really, to get this sock business going. Over the course of the year I managed to build a sock knitter empire, thanks in part to nebenan.de: in addition to friends and colleagues, there were hitherto unknown people who just believed this crazy woman from Bonn Poppelsdorf who said she was looking for knitters for a good cause (they are sold at s18 Euros per pair). And then they knitted. And knitted. AND KNITTED! Let’s start with the model Johanna – if I can still do anything as perfectly as this when I’m 90, I’ll feel truly blessed:

Was ich durch diese Aktion festgestellt habe: es gibt unglaubliche viele unterschiedliche Arten Socken zu stricken. Susann strickt auf dem Spann anders als auf der Sohle, ein ganz aparter Effekt… wenn auch auf den Fotos mangels Tageslicht nicht ganz so gut zu erkennen:

One thing I found out about with all these different knitters: there are incredibly many different ways of knitting socks. Susann has one pattern on the soles and another on the instep – to quite the effect… though unfortunately it’s a bit hard to make out on the pictures due to a lack of daylight:

Babette hat als erste auf den Aufruf im Internet reagiert und sozusagen als Test das erste Paar gestrickt – und Lust auf mehr bekommen:

Babette was the first to react to that internet post looking for knitters. She made the first pair as a test of the whole undertaking – and was then ready for more:

Und nicht nur das: sie hat auch gleich noch ihre Freundin Antje mitbegeistert, die zwei Paar gemacht hat:

Dann gibt es die Modelle Maria – Maria H und Maria S. Die kenne ich beide nicht persönlich – Maria Hs Sohn hat sie einfach mal für den guten Zweck „rekrutiert“ und sie selbst dann die Nachbarin Maria S. Es kam in der Folge zu konspirativen Socken gegen neue Wolle-Übergaben am Poppelsdorfer Platz. Und dann… haben sie mich mit Socken zugeworfen:

Then there’s the Maria models – Maria H and Maria S. I’ve never met either one – Maria H was “recruited” by her son who’s read about it on the internet and then persuaded her neighbor Maria S as well. We then had a few conspiratorial socks for new wool hand-overs at Poppelsdorf square. And then… they drowned me in socks:

Nun zum Modell Cornelia. Das ist ein ganz besonderes, mit Zopfmuster. Und da sagten mir andere Strickerinnen: das ist viel komplizierter. Deswegen gehen die für 20 Euro an einen neuen Eigentümer. Hinweis: auf dem Foto kommt nicht wirklich rüber, dass die cremeweißen außerdem einen Goldfaden haben (Größe 38)… hochexquisite Weihnachtssocken also! Und die türkise Variante kann noch nach Wunschgröße (zwischen 38 und 41) angepasst werden:

Now look at the model Cornelia. That’s quite special, with that braided pattern. Other knitters told me: that’s a bit more complicated. That’s why these are sold at 20 Euros. Note: you can’t really see on the picture that the off-white ones also have a gold thread (size 38)… absolutely exquisite Christmas socks! And the turqouise pair can be made to order anywhere from size 38 to 41:

Trixi ist seit Jahren eine treue Kundin beim Basar und 2018 begeistert, endlich auch mal etwas dazu beisteuern zu können. Und begeistert bin auch ich!

Trixi has been a loyal customer at the fundraiser for years and was excited to be able to participate on the other side of the tiller in 2018. And so am I!

Phantom D is das nächste Modell. Ich kann euch gar nicht sagen, in welchem Tempo da hochklassige Socken rausgehauen wurden. Und noch dazu war diese Strickerin eine Spätberufene, was diesen Anlass angeht. Ich kam mit der Wolllieferung kaum hinterher…

The following model goes by Phantom D. I can’t even begin to tell you at what speed these high class socks were produced. This knitter was a latecomer into the whole affair. I almost couldn’t keep up with the wool delivery…

Auch aus der Gruppe der ehemals Unbekannten kommt das Modell Doris – die unter anderem sogar speziell für BVB-Fans aktiv war. Dazu hat sie auch einige allerliebste Babysöckchen im Angebot (das Paar für 5 Euro):

Aber damit war es für Doris nicht getan. Ich präsentiere das jetzt einfach mal der Reihe nach und beginne mit diesem niedlichen Set für ein Neugeborenes, Jäckchen, Mütze und Söckchen (30 Euro):

Langsam wird es mal Zeit für was essbares, findet ihr nicht? Auch da sind wir dieses Jahr unglaublich gut ausgestattet. Fangen wir mal mit Bigggi an. Die hat ein Paprikamus (5,90 Euro) gemacht. Aus eigener Erfahrung kann ich sagen: absolut delikat! Es gibt eine pikante Variante und eine für so empfindliche europäische Gaumen wie meinen. Es hält sich laut Rezept 5-6 Monate – ich kann mindestens 8 Monate bestätigen… so lange stand meins im Regal, bis ich endlich in den Genuss kam:

And let me tell you: it’s delicious! There’s a spicy variety and one that is better for people with as sensitive a European palate as mine. As per recipe it will last 5-6 months – but I can confirm at least 8 months… that’s how long my jar was on the shelf before I finally tried it:

Auch Christa ist wieder dabei – viele von euch werden sie noch kennen. Auch in diesem Jahr hat sie ihren Vater Manfred den Garten plündern und die Beute schnibbeln lassen, die sie dann in Kürbis-Ananas-Marmelade und Apfel-Zimt-Vanille-Gelée verwandelt hat (kleine Gläser 3,80, große Gläser 4,80 Euro):

Christa joined in the fun again as well. Just as she did last year, she teamed up with her father Manfred who pillaged his garden and then chopped the booty so she could cook her Pumpkin-Apple Jam and Apple-Cinnamon-Vanilla Jelly (small jars at 3,80, large ones at 4,80 Euros):

Doch was wäre ein Hospiz-Basar ohne ihre Pralinen (6,50 Euro pro Beutel)?

This fundraiser wouldn’t be what it has become without her chocolates (6,50 Euros a bag):

Nicht in der Küche aktiv, aber treu dabei war auch Silvia. Ihre neuesten Kreationen sind diese Engel Charms (klein 3 Euro, mittel 4,50, groß 5,50 Euro):

Silvia is also a loyal contributor to the cause – though the kitchen is not her comfort zone. She made these angel charms (small at 3 Euros, medium at 4,50, large at 5,50 Euros):

Auch ich war dieses Jahr wieder aktiv. Zusammen mit meinem neuen Kurbler Kathrin lief am Wochenende die Spritzgebäck-Bäckerei auf vollen Touren, so dass ich den Verkaufsschlager der vergangenen Jahre, die Kekstüten, wieder im Angebot habe (7 Euro das Stück):

I also made a few things. I’ve found a new „crank girl“, my sister Kathrin, and together we made tons of piped cookies on the weekend so the top seller of the past years is back again: the cookie bags (at 7 Euros a piece).

Mit der Hilfe eines Kollegen in Madagaskar konnte ich für alle die, die im letzten Jahr aufgrund der großen Nachfrage kein Pfeffer-Set mehr bekommen konnten, für Nachschub sorgen. Die Sets beinhalten schwarzen Pfeffer, roten „Pfeffer“ und Wilden Pfeffer (poivre sauvage / Voatsiperifery) (10 Euro das Set):

With the help of a colleague in Madagascar I managed to make more of the popular pepper sets that so many of you couldn’t get last year. The sets contain black pepper, red „pepper“ and wild pepper (poivre savage / Voatsiperifery) (10 Euros per set):

Zum Abschluss möchte ich euch Daw Thein Aye aus Myanmar vorstellen. Sie ist eine Bäuerin aus einem Dorf im Ayeyarwady Delta, wo sie mit ihrer Mutter, ihrer Schwester, ihrem Bruder und einem Neffen lebt. Sie baut Reis an – in dieser Region ist nur eine Ernte im Jahr möglich, so dass sie weitere Einkünfte braucht. Über das Welthungerhilfe Delta RISE Projekt konnte sie an einer Schulung zu Recycling teilnehmen und hat u.a. gelernt, wunderschöne Taschen herzustellen… aus alten Regenschirmen. Die könnt ihr hier erwerben und drei Fliegen mit einer Klappe schlagen: Daw Thein Aye unter die Arme greifen, für das Hospiz spenden und Recycling unterstützen. Die Taschen (Modell Schultertasche und Modell Einkaufsbeutel) kosten 8 Euro das Stück, Modell „Schulterbeutel“ 4 Euro.

And finally let me introduce Daw Thein Aye from Myanmar. She is a farmer from the Ayeyarwady Delta where she lives with her mother, sister, brother and nephew. She grows rice which in this region only yields one harvest per year so she needs additional income to make ends meet. She participated in the Welthungerhilfe Delta RISE project, learned about waste management and recycling and received a training in sewing. She now makes beautiful bags… from old umbrellas. You can purchase these bags here and kill three birds with one stone: support Daw Thein Aye, donate to the hospice and support recycling. The bags (shoulder bags and take along shopping bags) are 8 Euros each, the simpler ones are 4 Euros a piece.
