I think it’s safe to say that the monster is back – with a vengeance! The Cape marguerites are almost gone and the petunias must be grateful to be of the hanging kind. This way they can flee downwards…
Ich wette allerdings, dass, wenn ich mich im kommenden Jahr traue, NUR die Geranie in den riesigen Kasten zu pflanzen, sie nicht so glänzen und womöglich vollkommen den Löffel abgeben wird…
I’m sure, though, that should I dare plant ONLY the geranium in that big flower box next year it won’t shine like this and maybe even pip out altogether…

Neue Ideen… Bei Winter Wonderland ist Kreativität in blau und weiß gefragt in dieser Woche – und das verbunden mit einem Blog Hop. Das Konzept ist mir ja schon öfter untergekommen, aber ich habe mich nie so wirklich damit beschäftigt. Es schließt sich eine Gruppe Kreativer zusammen, die alle zum gleichen Thema gearbeitet haben und man „hüpft“ von einem Blog zum anderen, guckt sich die Arbeiten an, kommentiert, verlinkt seine eigene Arbeit und löst – in diesem Fall zumindest – ein Rätsel. Daran arbeite ich auch noch…
New ideas… Winter Wonderland asks for creativity in blue and white this week – and combines this with a blog hop. I’ve come across blog hops before but have never really read in detail what it is about. A group of creative people works on the same subject and the audience „hops“ from one blog to the next, has a look at the creations, comments, leaves a link to their own creation and solves – in this case at least – a mystery. I’m working on it…
Blau und weiß. Ich hatte den alten Atlas im Kopf und die Karte vom Sternenhimmel. Blauer Himmel und weiße Sterne. Und darauf sah ich die Rentiere auf dem Weg zu Santa Claus… Das war nicht wirklich viel Arbeit und es ist zugegebenermaßen eine eher ungewöhnliche Weihnachtskarte, aber ich finde, sie hat was.
Blue and white. I remembered the old map book and the stellar map in particular. Blue sky and white stars. And on it I saw the reindeer, on their way to Santa Claus… It wasn’t a lot of work, really and admittedly, it’s a rather unusual Christmas card but somehow there’s something about it.

Muskelaufbau à la Muckibude ist deutlich anders, aber es ist schon sehr befriedigend, den Fortschritt zu beobachten. Hat man sich in den ersten Wochen noch den Hügel zur Ampel hochgequält, um verzweifelt nach Atem ringend und mit hochrotem Kopf oben anzukommen und entsetzt feststellen zu müssen: „Oh NEIN! Die Ampel ist GRÜN!!! Ich kann nicht mehr!“ so läuft das nun mit links und man hofft auf grün, denn eine grüne Welle würde deutlich dazu beitragen, dass man den Geschwindigkeitrsrekord mal unterbietet.
Workout-like muscle mass is something else but it’s a very satisfying to see progress. When I first started taking the bike to work it was a nightmare to get up that little hill towards the traffic lights – to reach it with a red balloon for a head and desperately panting for air only to realize „Oh NO! The light is GREEN!!! I need a break!“. That is different now that I usually breeze through and hope for a „green wave“ so as to beat my speed record.
Diese Woche gab es ein Abschiedsessen im äthiopischen Restaurant, ein nettes Abendessen mit einer Kollegin (Pizza) und einen Kaffeeklatsch, der zwar nicht ganz verheerend, aber doch auch nicht förderlich war. Und dann die fiesen Methoden meines Mitstreiters Dirk, der seine Frau dazu aufforderte, mir Pralinen aus Brüssel mitzubringen…. Ein bisschen erfreulich, dass auch er stagniert, hähä. So sieht es denn nun aus:
This week there was a good-bye dinner at an Ethiopian restaurant, a nice dinner with a colleague (pizza) and a coffeeklatsch which wasn’t completely devastating but certainly not very helpful either. And of course the mean practices of rival Dirk who entices his wife to bring some pralines from Brussels for me… I’m happy to report, though, that his efforts are also stagnating. There’s a tiny little bit of schadenfreude involved… Here’s the score:

Man erlebt immer wieder ganz erstaunliche Dinge. Und manchmal regt man sich dann auf. So auch wieder gestern im Supermarkt. Erfreut stellte ich fest, dass es wieder mal „Fußballbildchen“ in bestimmten Schokoriegeln gibt. „Oh super,“ denke ich, „bald ist ja auch Frauenfußball-WM in Deutschland!“ Kaufe aus Solidarität trotz Diät-Wettkampf zwei – nur, um dann festzustellen, dass es irgendwelche hinterbänklerischen, gegelten Bundeliga-Profis sind! Ich bin ja nicht gerade der heißeste Verehrer des Frauenfußballs, aber diese Ignoranz ist unglaublich. Auch wenn man mich sonst nicht so dafür begeistern kann (aber für die Bundesliga ebensowenig!), so wird doch, wenn das Turnier erstmal läuft, wieder der wild schreiende Patriot aus mir hervorbrechen! Jawoll!! Allerspätestens am 17. Juli zum Endspiel in Frankfurt, da bin ich nämlich dabei. So!
Sometimes there are these strange things happening, like yesterday when I was grocery shopping. I was excited to see that there are „soccer pictures“ included with certain chocolate bars again. „Oh great,“ I thought „soon there’ll be the women’s soccer world cup in Germany.“ And then, being all solidarity, I buy two of them – despite the dietary competition that I am in… only to find that they are of some unknown Bundesliga pros with greasily styled hairdos! I’m certainly not one of the most ardent fans of women’s soccer but the ignorance involved here is unspeakable. I don’t usually get excited about it (but neither do I when it comes to Bundesliga!) but I know that once the championship has started the dormant wildly cheering patriot will erupt again! At the very latest on July 17 when I will be present at Frankfurt stadium to watch the final! So there!
Aber eigentlich wollte ich doch was ganz anderes berichten! Ich habe eine neue Weihnachtskarten-Challenge gefunden 🙂 Bei Bah!Humbug! gibt’s auch jede Woche in neues Thema… oh, hört es denn nie auf?? Diese Woche ist man inspiriert von Jingle Bells – also vor allem Glöckchen sollen in der Kreation auftauchen.
Anyway, I was going to tell you something completely different! I’ve found another Christmas Card Challenge 🙂 Does it ever stop?? There’s a new one at Bah! Humbug!every week and this week’s is inspired by Jingle Bells – so the focus is on bells.

Das war heute mal was im Botanischen Garten – eine herbe Enttäuschung. Es war Zeit für ein Rhododendron-Update… und klar war, dass der Höhepunkt überschritten war – aber dass es derart rasant bergab geht. Wow. Zum Vergleich die ersten vier Monate des Jahres:
That was quite something at the Botanical Gardens today – a huge disappointment. It was time to get an update on the rhododendrons… and I realized that the climax had passed – but nothing prepared me for this rapid demise. Wow. Have a look at the first four months of the year:
Hm. Was suche ich mir wohl für das nächste Jahr aus… Naja, ich habe ja noch etwas Zeit, mich zu entscheiden. Erstmal ein schönes Wochenende!
Mmh. I wonder what I should document next year… Well, there’s still some time left to decide. For now have a nice weekend!

Im Mai ging bzw. geht es bei CCAYR ja noch ein paar Tage darum fünf Weihnachtskarten zu basteln, die in ihrer Aufteilung halbwegs einem vorgegebenen Muster entsprechen, siehe zur linken. Es war viel, viel schwieriger, als ich jemals gedacht hätte… Aber nun sind sie vollbracht – für mein Gefühl „kleben“ sie zu sehr an der Vorlage:
The May Challenge at CCAYR was to create five Christmas cards along the sketch to the left. That turned out to be a whole lot more difficult than I had imagined… Here’s the result – to my eye they try to stick to the sketch too much:

Im Winter berichtete ich hier über die August Kekulé Statue, die immer mal wieder der Saison entsprechend ausgestattet wird – damals mit Ski und den entsprechenden Stöcken. Und nun war es soweit: der Sommer ist da und Deutschland grillt, Kekulé mittendrin!
In winter I wrote on the August Kekulé statue that undergoes seasonal decorations – at the time he was carrying a pair of skies and the matching sticks. And now that summer’s here and Germany is barbecuing, Kekulé couldn’t be left out!

Eine weitere Woche der großen Wette ist um und der „Große Winzerteller“ vom Freitag dank eiserner Disziplin Samstag und Sonntag keinen Niederschlag gefunden. Auch bei Dirk geht es weiter rasant abwärts und noch sind keine stimmungsbezogenen Auswirkungen der Radikalmethode zu entdecken. Nur am Freitag, als wir ewig auf das Essen warten mussten, hatte ich das Gefühl, dass der Blutzuckerspiegel definitiv zu weit gefallen war. Bei Irma flacht die Kurve etwas ab, zum Glück aber auch in anderen Bereichen, so dass wenigstens das Maßband weiter bemerkenswerte Erfolge bringt.
Another week of the great competition is over and the „Large Vintner’s Plate” I had on Friday doesn’t show – thanks to stern discipline on Saturday and Sunday. Dirk continues to go down in weight at an amazing rate and so far I haven’t been able to detect any signs of moodiness while following this radical approach. Just when we had to wait for dinner forever on Friday I had the feeling that his blood sugar levels were next to non-existent. Irma’s curve is leveling somewhat – but fortunately so do other curves and successes can still be recorded with the measuring tape.

Dort wurde berichtet, dass Menschen, die im mittleren Alter (welches an anderer Stelle als 45-69 Jahre definiert wurde) stark übergewichtig (adipös, BMI über 30) sind, ein viermal höheres Risiko haben, Demenz zu entwickeln. Geringeres Übergewicht erhöht das Risiko immerhin noch 1,8 mal.
The Guardian Weekly of May 13, 2011 published a brief article on the results of research concerning the correlation between midlife obesity with a BMI of 30+ (middle age being defined elsewhere as 45-69 yrs.) and the development of dementia in later life. Their risk is four times higher whereas merely overweight people run a 1.8 times higher risk.

Ich hatte gehofft, heute würde es wie vorhergesagt ordentlich regnen und gewittern – es wäre dann irgendwie besser zu argumentieren gewesen, dass man den Tag mehr oder weniger in der Wohnung verbringt. Aber nun ja… Jedenfalls: was für eine coole Sache bei ABC Christmas Challenge! Zuerst war ich nicht angetan… quadratisch mal wieder… und irgendwie und überhaupt. Eine kleinere Karte steckt in der größeren und im Optimalfall gibt es eine Art Überraschung, wenn man sie aufklappt. Das ist meine erste (!) Kreation zu diesem Thema:
I was hoping for the forecast rains and thunderstorms to come – it would have felt more appropriate to spend most of the day in my apartment. Well… Anyway: what a cool thing over at ABC Christmas Challenge! I wasn’t really taken at first… a square again and then… everything somehow. A smaller card is tucked into a larger card and if all works well there is sort of a surprise when you open it. This is my first (!) creation for this challenge:
Und dann hatte es mich gepackt. Eine Idee an der anderen – wenn ich auch bislang erst eine weitere umgesetzt habe. Wäre ich etwas schneller gewesen, wäre sie auch noch gut Winter Wonderland untergekommen, wo es letzte Woche darum ging, das Thema „Geschenk“ zu verarbeiten. Geschenke trägt der Santa und es ist innen dann ein Geschenk für den Adressaten: ein Schneemann-Ornament.
And then I was hooked. One idea following the other – though I have only realized one more yet. Had I been a little faster on this I could also have entered it in last week’s challenge at Winter Wonderland where „present“ was supposed to be part of the creation. Santa is carrying presents and there’s an actual present for the recipient inside: a snowman ornament.
Und nun kommt doch tatsächlich auch noch die Sonne raus… dann werde ich wohl doch mal noch ein paar Schritte vor die Tür machen! Bis bald!
