Ab heute geht es bei Our Beautiful World um (Ge)Stein. Das hat mich daran erinnert, dass ich noch gar nicht von meinem Besuch in der Römervilla in Ahrweiler berichtet habe. Da war ich Ende September mit Kollegen. Und ich war absolut fasziniert. Schon von der Architektur des Museumsbaus – so ohne jeden Stützpfeiler.

The new prompt at Our Beautiful World today is „Stone“. That reminded me of a post I’ve wanted to write since the end of September, when I went to see the Roman Villa in Ahrweiler. I went there with colleagues and was intrigued – first by the architecture of the musem as such – without any support.

Die Villa wurde 1980 im Rahmen von Bauarbeiten für eine Umgehungsstraße entdeckt. Die Mauern des Komplexes stehen teilweise noch in einer Höhe von 1,50m, vielfach sind Wand- oder Deckenmalereien zu sehen – sogar ein Graffito gibt es, wo sich offenbar ein Lehrer und sein Schüler einen Wortstreit geliefert haben.

The villa was discovered in 1980 when work started on a by-pass. The remaining walls of the complex are preserved to a height of 1.50 meteres in some places and often you can see the original wall or ceiling paintings. There’s even a graffito where apparently a teacher and his student had a little debate.

Mir haben alle diese kleinen Details gefallen, die man immer noch erkennen kann oder auch die verwandten Techniken. Im Bild unten sieht man die Küche und in der Wand diesen kleinen Durchgang. Es ist gar kein Durchgang (ist ja auch viel zu klein). In diesem „Tunnel“ wurde das Feuer für die Bodenheizung der dahinterliegenden Bäder betrieben.

I like all the details there are to discover or the techniques that were used. In the picture below you can see the kitchen and a little passage in the wall. But it’s not really a passage (it’s much too small anyway). It’s more like a „tunnel“ in which they made the fires to heat the floors of the adjoning baths.

Oder die große Auswahl an Dachziegeln mit Fußabdrücken (Katze, Kleinkind, Sandale mit genagelter Sohle).

Or the numerous roof tiles featuring all kinds of different foot prints (cat, toddler, sandal with nailed sole).

Wirklich den Besuch wert – wir hatten eine fast anderthalbstündige Führung und es gab noch einiges mehr zu sehen bzw. zu diskutieren. Apropos Besuch wert: einen Besuch wert ist auch der Eintrag zum diesjährigen Fundraiser für das Elisabeth-Hospiz in Lohmar 😉 Habt einen schönen Sonntag!

Gänse und Laternen /Geese and Lanterns

Irgendwie hatte ich keine Lust. Aber ich hatte neuen Mitarbeitern angeboten, sie auf den Martinszug mitzunehmen. Also war ich um 16:30 Uhr gestiefelt und gespornt am Ausgang. Keiner kam. „Könnte ich auch heimfahren…“ dachte ich. Aber ging nicht. In Dottendorf angekommen überlegte ich, mir nur die wie immer wunderschöne Schule anzusehen. Aber ging nicht. „Dann bleibe ich einfach mal hier stehen und lasse den Zug nur an mir vorbeiziehen.“ Aber ging nicht.

Somehow I wasn’t really in the mood. But I had offered our new employees to show them a St. Martin’s parade, a tradition of the area. So I stood there booted and spurred at 4:30 pm at the entrance. Nobody came. „I could just call it a day…“, I thought. But it wasn’t an option. On the ground in Dottendorf I was wondering whether a quick visit to view the beautifully lit school would do it this year. But it wasn’t an option. „Well, I guess I just stand here and let them all walk past me.“ But it wasn’t an option.

Martinsfeuer muss ja nicht sein, ist ja doch immer das gleiche. Aber ging nicht. Und das alles bei angenehmen Temperaturen bei bester Stimmung – und wenn überhaupt, dann mit noch mehr Deko an den Häusern als in den Vorjahren. Immer wieder schön.

I don’t have to see the fire – it’s just the same every year after all. But it wasn’t an option. And all that in very comfy temperatures and great atmosphere – and if at all possible, with even more decorations on the houses than in previous years.

Und Entdeckungen gab es auch noch. Diese hier fand ich einfach genial.

And there were still discoveries to be made. I found this one absolutely brilliant [„Meeting place ‚Gemuetlichkeit on Tuesdays‘ at Barbara’s.“]

Und zum guten Schluss habe ich noch das allerallerallerwunderbarste Stück überhaupt gefunden. Süßkram zu Martin. Aber kein Weckmann. Oh nein. Auch kein Hirzemännchen oder was auch immer man in anderen Teilen Deutschlands zu dieser Jahreszeit bevorzugt anbietet. Es war auch eher eine Konditorei als eine Bäckerei. Und ich bin wohl nur reingegangen, weil ich letztlich dann wohl doch nicht ganz so lange wie sonst am Martinsfeuer ausgeharrt habe. Aber nun sagt mir: ist das nicht der Hammer?

And at the very end I found this absolutely totally second to none piece ever. St. Martin’s candy. But not the regular dudes… or whatever other parts of Germany have on offer when it comes to baked goods of the seasonn. It was more like a patisserie than a bakery after all. And I think I only ventured inside because I did leave the fire earlier than usual. But now tell me: isn’t this absolutely adorable (seeing that geese are a major part of the tradition)?

Bei ‚Tis The Season ist noch für wenige Stunden eine heftige Farbkombination das Thema. Wie so oft war mein erster Gedanke, dass das gar nicht geht – nur, um dann festzustellen, dass es richtig gut geht. Nur mit den Fotos ist es ein Elend nach Feierabend…

There are only a few hours left to participate at the Color Challenge over at ‚Tis The Season. As happens so often, I looked at the color combination aghast but once I sat down to make the card found out it worked really well. It’s just not the season for well-lit photos…

Vierte Runde / Fourth Round

46 Days till ChristmasWeihnachten ist schon um die Ecke! 46 Tage noch… Höchste Zeit, den Fundraiser für das Elisabeth-Hospiz in Lohmar zu starten. Es geht in die vierte Runde und nach zwei Saisons mit Plätzchentüten wollte ich in diesem Jahr mal was anderes anbieten. Der Gedanke aber, keine Plätzchen anzubieten, stieß im Freundes- und Kollegenkreis auf Entsetzen. So habe ich mich – aller guten Dinge sind drei – dazu entschieden, auch 2015 wieder zu verzieren und zu backen!

Christmas is just around the corner! 46 days to go… Time to start this year’s fundraiser for the Elisabeth Hospice in Lohmar again. It’s my fourth year of fund raising and after two years with Christmas cookie bags on offer I had planned to do something else. But friends and colleagues were shocked to hear there weren’t going to be cookies. So – as all good things come in threes – I will craft and bake again in 2015!

Das Angebot im Detail – die Preise bleiben stabil, aber das Angebot ist begrenzt:

  • Leere Tüten für 3,80€ das Stück (mit 10% Rabatt bei einer Abnahme von 10 oder mehr)
  • Mit Gebäck gefüllte Tüten für 7,00 € das Stück (Rabatt gilt auch hier). Das Gebäck ist das fantastischste Spritzgebäck, nach altem Familienrezept.

Sollte keine persönliche Übergabe möglich sein, kommen (reine) Portokosten dazu. Zum Versand empfehle ich allerdings die leere Variante… da besteht schon eine Bruchgefahr. Schmeckt dann zwar immer noch, kann aber mitleiderreged aussehen. Und hier noch ein paar Details…

This year I offer the following – prices are steady but quantities are limited:

  • Empty bags at 3.80 € apiece (10% discount on your order of 10 or more)
  • Cookie-filled bags at 7.00 € apiece (discount applies here, too). The cookies are the world’s best piped cookies, an old family recipe.

If they can’t be handed over personally, shipping costs will be added. I recommend to order only empty bags when shipping is needed, though… the cookies can break. Doesn’t affect the taste but they look a little pathetic. And now for a few more details…

ABER mein anderes Projekt war bereits angelaufen und ich habe es hier ausführlich vorgestellt: weihnachtliche Türkränze aus Toilettenpapierrollen. Da mir der dort vorgestellte erste Kranz wider Erwarten kurz nach Erscheinen des Beitrags bereits für 30 Euro für den guten Zweck abgekauft wurde, habe ich dann doch noch einige gemacht. Folgende sind im Angebot und eine „special edition“ in Gold ist noch in der Mache:

Bestellungen für Plätzchentüten und Kränze werden nach Eingang entgegen genommen – wer zuerst kommt, mahlt zuerst. Plätzchen werden voraussichtlich ab der ersten Dezemberwoche lieferbar sein (wenn es zeitkritisch ist, bitte Kontakt aufnehmen).

Orders for both cookie bags and wreaths will be handled on a first come, first serve basis. Cookies are scheduled to be ready for delivery by the first week in December (if the timing is an issue, please get in touch).

Die Karte kommt nicht groß daher – aber doch mit einer deutlich Portion Glitter. Ich gebe sie in die Challenge bei Holly Jolly und 52CCT, bei der ersten geht es momentan um Schneemänner, bei der zweiten kann man es sich aus früheren Challenges aussuchen. Und nun genießt euren Feierabend!

I kept the card really simply – but with lots of glitter. I enter it at the challenges of Holly Jolly and 52CCT. The former is about snowmen and the latter is „pick a previous theme“ – and „snowman“ was available 🙂 And now enjoy your evening!

Es ist nicht so, dass ich gar nicht mehr basteln würde. Im Gegenteil. Aber ich komme nicht mehr zum posten… Jetzt schaffe ich es mal wieder für die laufene Challenge der Jingle Belles, bei der man sich an eine Skizze halten soll.

MMM – Merry Monday Moose

Gesehen hatte ich die Challenge schon Anfang der Woche: Elche! Bei Merry Monday! Es war sofort klar, dass ich da dabei sein muss. Aber die Woche war gegen mich. Jetzt habe ich es in letzter Sekunde doch noch geschafft, stark inspiriert von DT (Design Team) Mitglied Bonnie Klass – eine wunderschöne Karte, die man sich hier ansehen kann.

I had seen the challenge basically when it was posted already: Moose! Over at Merry Monday! Of course I had to participate but then this past week everything worked against me. But now I managed a last minute card, very much inspired by what DT member Bonnie Klass did – she took my breath away, have a look here.

Einen Prägefolder für Birkenwald habe ich nicht und auch keinen entsprechenden Elchstempel. Aber Tapetenmuster und einen ausgestanzten Elch, den mir eine Freundin aus Alaska schon vor vielen Jahre geschickt hat (ja, es mag wie das reine Chaos aussehen in meiner Bastelecke – aber nur für das ungeübte Auge)… Ich weiß jetzt gar nicht, ob das in dieser Challenge okay ist, eine Karte derart zu „CASen“ (Copy and Steal/Share), aber man wird’s mir schon sagen.

I don’t have a birch forest embossing folder and no appropriate moose stamp. But old wallpaper samples and a moose die cut a friend from Alaska sent me years back (yes, my creative nook might look chaotic – but only to the uninitiated)… Anyhow, I don’t even know if it’s okay to CAS a card for this challenge but I assume the DT will let me know, one way or the other.

Der Gruß ist auf Vellum ausgedruckt… und der erste Satz ist natürlich ein Zitat aus meinem Lieblingsgedicht Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening von Robert Frost. Da sich auf der Karte somit nichts gestempeltes findet, stelle ich sie gleich auch noch bei CCAYR ein, wo es diesen Monat genau darum geht: keinen Stempel zu verwenden. Und nun noch einen schönen Restsonntag!

Alles rosa! / Going pink!

Es ist wieder soweit: zu dieser Jahreszeit geht es bei den Jingle Belles nur noch um rosa, denn für jede Weihnachtskarte, die rosa enthält, spendet das Team 2 USD, in diesem Jahr an die Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Ich habe mich ins Zeug gelegt…

It’s that time of year again, Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and over at the Jingle Belles it’s all about pink: for every Christmas card that includes at least a bit of pink and is posted on their blog, the team will donate 2 USD to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. I got the message…

Die Karte war sehr schwer zu fotografieren (wie man sehen kann), denn das glänzende Folienpapier war nicht besonders kooperativ. Aber ich denke, man kann sich ein Bild machen.

The card was hard to photograph (as you can tell) because the shiny foil paper wasn’t cooperating. But I think you can still make out the main characteristics.

Und wo ich dann einmal dabei war, habe ich gleich drei gemacht, aber ich denke, um die Jingle Belles spendenmäßig mehr bluten zu lassen, muss ich mir noch was neues einfallen lassen! Habt eine schöne Restwoche!

Farbenfroher Tag / Colorful Day

Gestern Abend (oder ganz früh heute Morgen…) war es eigentlich nur ärgerlich: mein Fahrrad stand nicht wie vereinbart vor der Radstation, vom stündlichen Nachtbus sah ich wegen des Umwegs zur Radstation gerade noch die Rücklichter und konnte dann kurz vor 1 Uhr zu Fuß nach Hause latschen.

Last night (or really early this morning…) it was just an annoyance: my bike wasn’t locked outside the closed bike station as requested, I then – due to the detour via the bike station – only saw the tail-lights of the hourly night bus and ended up walking home, going on 1 a.m.

Aber heute Morgen wendete sich dann alles zum guten bzw. es stellte sich mal wieder heraus, dass alles einen tieferen Sinn hat. Denn ohne das Abholen des Rads wäre ich wahrscheinlich nicht auf den Gedanken gekommen, den letzten Sonntag bis März zu nutzen, an dem der sträflich vernachlässigte Botanische Garten noch geöffnet hat.

But this morning I again realized that everything has a deeper meaning. If I hadn’t had to go pick up that bike I probably wouldn’t have thought of paying the Botanical Gardens their last visit until March 2016 (closed on weekends during winter). And boy, am I glad I did!

Winterglitzer / Winter Glitter

Der September war hektisch (und der Oktober hat Potenzial, sich genauso zu entwickeln, aber das verdränge ich noch gekonnt), aber gestern wurde neben dem Tag der Deutschen Einheit auch der World Card Making Day gefeiert. Und wie feiert man ihn besser, als mit dem Basteln von Karten? Gesundheitlich etwas angeschlagen hat es immerhin zu einer gereicht, die ich bei den Jingle Belles einstelle, deren laufende Challenge den Titel „The Hanukkah Song“ trägt – eine Karte, die entweder einen anderen „Winterfeiertag“ zum Thema hat oder einfach Winter. Das war zumindest der Plan – Schneemänner halt. Aber dass die Nikolausmützen tragen, Weihnachtsbäume schleppen und Candy Canes schlecken… okay, doch eindeutig Weihnachten – das fällt mir jetzt erst auf! Vielleicht ist das Hirn doch noch etwas umnebelt…

September was a hectic month (and October potentially has more of that in store but so far I’ve been good at blocking that thought). Yesterday wasn’t only German Unity Day but also World Card Making Day – and the best way to celebrate that is to make cards! I’ve been a little bit under the weather, though, but I managed one which I will enter over at the current Jingle Belles challenge „The Hanukkah Song“ – a card for another winter holiday or just a winter themed card. That was the plan – snowmen, right? But they’re wearing Santa hats, carrying Christmas trees and candy canes… okay, that is Christmas alright – and I notice it only now! Put it down to the meds 😉

Diesen Stempel von Tara Reed verwende ich jedes Jahr wieder und dieses Mal habe ich lange diverse Papiere hin- und hergeschoben und dann entschieden: nein. Nur das eine, das ist einfach zu schön, um verdeckt zu werden. Das Glitzern lässt mich selbst an diesem schönen Herbsttag an Schnee denken! So, und nun genießt euren Sonntag!

I’ve been using this stamp by Tara Reed for years and this time I’ve been moving different papers back and forth on the card and then decided: no. It will be just this one paper – it’s just too nice to be covered by others. The glitter makes me think of snow, even on such a beautiful fall day as this one! And now enjoy your Sunday!
