Wie ich es wagen konnte, es schon auszupacken? Es war gar nicht verpackt! Denn jetzt kommt der Clou: es ist ein Kalender, in dem der Dezember gleich zweimal vorkommt… also waren zwei weihnachtliche Motive angesagt und natürlich musste er auch sofort Verwendung finden.

How dare I open it before Christmas? Well, it wasn’t wrapped! And that’s the best about it: it’s a calendar that features December and thus a Christmas theme twice! And of course I had to put it to use on the spot.

Der Oktober muss stark Halloween-lastig interpretiert worden sein mit den Gespenstern und Totenköpfen… ob die Kinder in Frankfurt mit Baseballschlägern und Morgensternen durch die Gegend ziehen, „Süßes oder Saures“ hat in der Großstadt eine härtere Note?

The focus in October was obviously Halloween, with ghosts and skulls… and I wonder whether kids in Frankfurt do a tougher version of trick or treating, armed with baseball bats and maces?

Ich kann gar nicht aufhören, mir die Bilder anzusehen – und wo soll ich ihn bloß aufhängen? Die Kollegen bestehen fast darauf, dass er ins Büro kommt. Es hätte den Vorteil, dass ich ihn mehr sehen würde… hmmmm. Aber nun wünsche ich erstmal einen schönen Abend!

I can’t stop looking at it – and where should I hang it up? The colleagues insist I should bring it to the office. The advantage would be that I get to see it more… mmmhhhh. But for now I wish you all a relaxed evening!

Lebkuchenhäuser gehören irgendwie nicht zu meinen Weihnachtstraditionen… Umso faszinierter war ich von diesem Mitbringsel zu meinem Open House am vergangenen Sonntag.

Gingerbread houses have for some reason never been part of my Christmas traditions… All the bigger the fascination when a friend brought this one as a gift for the Open House last Sunday.

Gestern war Lucia-Tag… und ich dachte, ich mache endlich mal ernst mit einer lange schon so rumwabernden Idee und habe ein „Open House“ verkündet, zwischen 14 und 18 Uhr konnte kommen, wer wollte – mit Sitzfleisch oder nur auf einen schnellen Glühwein oder so.

It was Lucia yesterday and I thought I’d finally do what I’d been thinking of for quite a while: host an „Open House“ between 2 and 6 pm for whoever was interested in dropping by, either for hours on end or just for a quick hello with a cup of mulled wine.

Die Wahl des Tags war ehrlich gesagt eine rein strategische: es war durch den Kaffeeklatsch am Samstag sichergestellt, dass die Wohnung in einem präsentablen Zustand sein würde 😀 Trotzdem hatte ich mir vorgenommen, zum ersten Mal selbst Lussekatter zu backen und somit auch zum ersten Mal Safran zu verwenden. Das sollte nicht die einzige Herausforderung bleiben… Rosinen vergessen (durch Cranberries ersetzt), das Teigrezept enthielt offenbar einen Fehler, was die Flüssigkeit anging – dann wollte er drei Stunden nicht „gehen“… aber letztlich wurde doch noch was leckeres draus:

If I’m completely honest I have to admit that the choice of day wasn’t really because of Lucia but because of the coffeeklatsch hosted on Saturday – so I was somewhat sure the apartment would be presentable 😀 But I had planned to bake lussekatter for the first time and so for the first time ever use saffron, too. It turned out that wouldn’t be the only challenge… forgot to buy raisins (substituted them with cranberries), apparently, there was a mistake in the recipe when it came to liquids – then it just refused to rise for three hours… but I finally turned it into something very yummy:

Plätzchen gab es natürlich auch wieder – und einige Apfel-Zimt-Muffins mit Deko, die mir eine aufmerksame Freundin vor einiger Zeit schon zugesandt hatte. Der Besuch des Open House hielt sich in Grenzen, was aber den Vorteil hatte, dass wir alle „unter“ den Baum passten, in den Genuss der Kaminfeuer-DVD kamen und uns gemütlich unterhalten konnten.

Of course, there were cookies again – and a few apple cinnamon muffins with toppers a considerate friend had sent me earlier. Attendance was rather low but the advantage was that we all found room „under“ the tree, fully enjoyed the fireplace DVD and got to chat (as opposed to the host just sort of hovering around between apartment door, stove and checking the buffet…)

Gestern war es wieder soweit: der weihnachtliche Kaffeeklatsch stand auf dem Programm. Ein Thema hatte ich ganz unverhofft schon im Urlaub im Frühjahr gefunden. Da die Nationalpflanze Madagaskars der Weihnachtsstern ist, konnte ich dort bereits die Tischwäsche besorgen und die Entscheidung war gefallen!

We had our annual Christmas coffeeklatsch again yesterday. While vacationing in spring I had already stumbled upon this year’s theme: Madagascar. Their national plant is the poinsettia and when I found the embroidered table cloth with matching napkins there, the issue was settled.

Die Zutaten für eine ansprechende Gebäckplatte hatten wir bereits vor einer Woche hergestellt…

I had made the parts of this plate with different Christmas cookies with a friend last week already…

Und mit ständig steigender Zahl an Gastgeschenken war bald nicht mehr viel von den gestickten Weihnachtssternen zu sehen!

And with the ever growing number of favors from the guests all the embroidered poinsettias soon disappeared!

Ich muss sagen, das absolute Highlight war die für diesen Anlass erstmalig hergestellte Egg Nog Fudge Pie. Viel vom ursprünglichen amerikanischen Rezept musste ich ersetzen und auch sonst kam es zu einigen Abänderungen, aber das Ergebnis hat mich davon überzeugt, dass ich die Herstellung durchaus nochmal angehen werde. Die ist an sich nicht kompliziert, zieht sich aber über mehr oder weniger 48 Stunden…

I have to say that the Egg Nog Fudge Pie I made for the first time was the uncontested highlight of the day. I had to substitute quite a few ingredients from the original American recipe and changed other things, too, but the result was convincing and I thik I’ll make it again some time. It’s not complicated as such but has a preparation and waiting time of about 48 hours…

Schon der 11. Dezember – womit der Advent schon fast Halbzeit hat… Wie sieht’s denn aus? Geschenke besorgt? Plätzchen gebacken? Nun aber erstmal ein Lächeln am frühen Morgen:

December 11 already – almost half-way through advent… And how are things? Have you bought all presents? Baked all those cookies? But now for a smile on this very early morning:

Und es wird Zeit für ein Update zum Fundraiser für das Elisabeth Hospiz in Lohmar: wir haben die 600 Euro-Marke durchbrochen – ein riesiges Dankeschön an euch alle. Ein Türkranz ist noch im Angebot und einige wenige leere Kekstüten… für spät Entschlossene! UND natürlich Mary’s wunderbare Sauce, die ich HIER vorgestellt habe.

Es hat sich gelohnt, bei bestem Wetter mal relativ früh unterwegs zu sein – wenn der Weihnachtsmarkt noch geschlossen ist und man sich mal darauf konzentrieren kann, was auf den Dächern eigentlich so alles los ist. Erstaunliches!

Last week I made it to the Christmas market early enough to walk it while it was still closed so I was able to concentrate on what was going on on the rooftops. Amazing!

Der Weihnachtsmann war viel vertreten – was macht er wohl hier? Ein Päuschen mit einem guten Buch? Oder doch eher Lektüre des Auftragsbuchs? Oder gar die Liste mit den Kindern, die nicht brav waren?

Of course, Santa was a frequent motive – what do you think he’s doing here? Having a little break with a good book? Or checking the order book, more like? Or even the list with the children who weren’t good?

Baumleuchte
Meine Kollegin Mary hatte eine ganz tolle Idee. Sie ist eine Superköchin (wovon wir uns zu so manchem Anlass schon überzeugen konnten) und verkauft darüber hinaus eine hausgemachte Gewürzsauce nach ghanaischem Familienrezept. Und die Idee ist die: für alle Gläser, die im Monat Dezember mit Verweis auf diesen Eintrag verkauft werden, spendet sie 50 Cent für meine Hospizaktion.

My colleague Mary had an excellent idea. She whips up the most delicious meals which we have been able to try on a number of occasions already – and she sells her very own Hot Sauce, made according to an old Ghanaian family recipe. And this is her idea: for every jar sold during the month of December for which the buyer refers to this blog post, she will donate 50 (Euro) cents for my hospice fundraiser.
