Zwei Jahre hatte ich es (mindestens) nicht mehr zum Frühlingsfest im Melbgarten geschafft – doch dieses Jahr sollte es wieder soweit sein. Und einen Kuchen hatte ich auch im Gepäck. Frohgemut war ich mit Öffnung der Tore um 10 Uhr vor Ort… und erstmal gab es einen Dämpfer, denn natürlich hatte der starke Frost vergangene Woche auch hier seine Spuren hinterlassen. Ich glaube mich zu erinnern, dass es die kälteste Nacht seit Beginn der Aufzeichung von Wetterdaten war. Nicht umsonst wurde in vielen Obsthainen mit Feuern und anderen Techniken versucht, der Sache die Spitze zu nehmen.
It’s been at least two years since I last managed to go to the Spring Fest at the Melbgarten, a branch of the Botanical Gardens in Bonn open to public only on that one day per year. I brought a cake, too, and was there right on time for the opening at 10 a.m… and a little shock at first as of course that wickedly cold night last week didn’t leave the premises unscathed. I seem to remember that it was the coldest night on record (for that night in April) and many people making a living off fruit fought it by lighting fires in their orchards or used other techniques.
Es ist ja aber auch immer wieder die schöne Anlage, in der es sich wunderbar einen Kaffee trinken und ein Stück Kuchen verspeisen lässt, die den Reiz der Sache ausmacht – und hier und da gab es dann doch auch noch ein paar nicht erfrorene Farbtupfer zu sehen.
After all, it’s also the design of the garden that makes it attractive – especially if you can have coffee and cake while gazing in the distance. And here and there, there were some blurs of color left, too:
Das kleine Gewächshaus war auch zum ersten Mal (dass ich es bemerkt hätte) auf und ich bin gespannt, ob diese Minikiefer es irgedwann mal schafft, als „richtiger“ Baum im Garten zu landen:
The little greenhouse was opened for the first time (that I noticed) and I wonder whether I get to see this tiny pine grow into a „real“ tree, being part of the arboretum:
Doch das Highlight – das absolute Highlight – waren Lilly und Louis, zwei kleine Eichhörnchenbabies, drei Wochen alt. Eine Frau aus Endenich kümmert sich um derzeit 16 verwaiste Eichhörnchen und drei Igel. Louis und Lilly müssen alle zweieinhalb Stunden gefüttert werden, auch nachts. Zum Glück sind die anderen Waisen schon älter und brauchen nicht mehr ganz so viel Aufmerksamkeit. Zu sehen ist hier nur Louis, seine Schwester blieb erstmal im warmen Nest.
The best part of it all was meeting Lilly and Louis, two three-week old baby squirrels. A woman from a Bonn neighborhood bordering mine takes care of currently 16 squirrels and three hedgehogs. Louis and Lilly need to be fed every 2.5 hours, also during the night. Luckily, the other orphans are a little older already and don’t need quite as much attention anymore. Here, you only see Louis, his sister Lilly stayed in the warm nest while I was around.
