Das Wetter bleibt seit langem hervorragend und ich bin so viel unterwegs, dass ich mit dem Posten gar nicht nachkomme. Aber hier steht derzeit alles unter dem Motto „Druck rausnehmen“, also wird gemacht, was der Tag freiwillig hergibt und Feierabend. So ist es dann auch schon ein bisschen her (erster Sonntag im März), dass ich mich „um Winnerath herum“ auf eine Wanderung begeben habe.

The weather here continues to be absolutely gorgeous and I am out and about so much that I can’t keep up with my posts here. But as these weeks are all about „releasing pressure“, I do what the day offers and nothing else. So it’s been a while (first Sunday in March) that I was hiking „around Winnerath.“

Der Plan war, den hier beschriebenen Höhenweg um Winnerath zu laufen, der als solcher nicht ausgeschildert ist. Das erwies sich als nicht so einfach, da die immer mal – laut Karte – abzulaufenden Teilstrecken ausgewiesener Wege… nicht mehr so wirklich ausgewiesen waren, ich mich (laut Beschreibung) schon über vermutlich flutbedingtes Flatterband hinwegsetzte, aber trotzdem schön unterwegs war, wenn ich auch nicht so genau sagen kann, wo eigentlich. Es zeigte sich also erneut: ich gucke lieber in der Landschaft rum, als mich in Karten zu vertiefen, papierne oder digitale, und folge dabei ausgewiesenen Pfaden. Für Interessierte: Plan vs. vermutete Realität 😉

The idea was to follow Höhenweg around Winnerath, which is not signposted as such. That turned out to be not as easy as I’d hoped: according to the map, parts of the route were supposed to be part of signposted routes… which weren’t all that clearly signposted anymore. Also, I had to disregard warning tapes, possibly flood-related (which was mentioned in the description of the route). Turns out: I had a great time anyway, even though for large parts of it I’m at a loss of where I actally walked. Conclusion (which doesn’t come as a surprise to me at all): I’d rather look at landscapes in all their facets than concentrate on maps, be they paper or digital, and simply follow a given route. If you’re interested: planned route vs. suspected real route 😉

Die allerersten Meter führen vorbei an einem Wegkreuz, das in seiner „Gesamtanlange“ wirkt, als sei es vor ca. 200 Jahren aufgestellt und gartenbaulich ausgestattet und danach nie wieder wirklich gepflegt worden.

On the very first stretch you pass a wayside cross which in its general set-up seems to have been put up about 200 years ago to the latest landscaping standards and then never really touched again.

Schlimme Erfahrungen hat offensichtlich der Eigentümer dieses Hochstands gemacht, der so explizit den Zutritt verwehrt und offenbar die eigene Leiter abgesägt hat… und nun mit Klappleiter zum Ansitz anrücken muss? Oder hat man ihm etwa einen Streich gespielt, ob der Beschilderung?

It seems the owner of this perch made unpleasant experiences for having to put up a „no trespassing“ sign and apparently sawed off the lower part of the ladder… and now has to bring a folding ladder to reach it? Or maybe it’s a prank, provoked by the sign?

Nicht viel weiter auf diesem Pfad (der wohl schon nicht mehr der richtige war und den ich nach diesem Foto wieder verlassen habe) sieht es aus, als hätten Riesen hier ein Mikado-Spiel aufgebaut – ich vermute mal, es handelt sich um Opfer der noch nicht so lange zurückliegenden Stürme.

Only a little bit further down that path (which I don’t think is part of the hike and which I retraced my steps on after taking the following picture) it looks like a bunch of giants had set up a game of Mikado – I guess we’re looking at victims of the recent storms we’ve had.

Ein Flashback zu sonntäglichen Spaziergängen als Kind gab’s auch: die Waldkaffeebohnen, eine ganze besondere Röstung, die ich – so wurde mir berichtet – mit Inbrunst gesammelt habe (es handelt sich um Rehlosung).

I also had a flashback to Sunday walks as a child: the forest coffee beans, a very special roast, which I used to collect with fervor – or so I was told (they are in fact deer fewmets – took a while to find that term…).

Von den Nahaufnahmen zum Blick über die Höhen – der Weg, welcher auch immer, lohnt sich auf jeden Fall (und ich habe einige verpasst!). An besagtem Tag war es allerdings zu kalt und zu windig, um die Aussichten länger sitzend zu genießen.

But let’s move from the close ups to the views of the hills – the hike, whichever route you follow, is definitely worth it for those (and I missed quite some!). On that very day, though, it was too cold and windy to actually sit for longer and take it in.

Je nach Perspektive kann man es auch aussehen lassen, als sei man in der mongolischen Steppe unterwegs, es fehlt nur die eine oder andere Yurte mit einer entsprechenden Herde Wiederkäuer in der Nähe.

Depending on the perspective, you can make it look as if you were crossing the Mongolian grasslands, with a ger certainly waiting around the next bend, along with a herd of ruminants of some sort.

Dafür, dass der Weg im folgenden Foto auch nicht Teil des Plans war, hat er mir ausgesprochen gut gefallen – mit grasbewachsenen Wegen macht man bei mir nichts falsch.

Considering that the path on the picture below was also not part of the plan, I really enjoyed it a lot – you can never go wrong with grass-covered paths like this one.

Winnerath auf jeden Fall habe ich wiedergefunden und in der Folge dann auch mit ein paar PS unter’m Hintern Schuld, wo ich pünktlich zur Kaffeezeit wieder überfordert war mit der Kuchentheke im Restaurant Schäfer. Der Käsekuchen war quasi eine volle Mahlzeit… aber die Eilikör-Sahnetorte, auf die ich dieses Mal verzichtet habe (mit Nussboden und Kirschfüllung, Schokolade ist auch im Spiel), ist ganz oben mit dabei. Nächstes Mal dann Bienenstich?

I did find my way back to Winnerath and then made my way down to Schuld by car in time for coffee and cake at Restaurant Schäfer. And as usual I was overwhelmed by the cake display. The cheese cake was fantastic (and let’s be honest: a full meal)… but the cream cake with egg liqueur that I passed on this time (a nut cake base, cherry filling… and chocolate plays a role as well) is way up there on the list of best cakes. „Bee sting cake“ next time? (Is that really the only translation there is?! Well, it’s weird in German, why wouldn’t it be weird in English…)
