Die Wettervorhersage war vielversprechend, aber es bedurfte heute Morgen wirklich aller Mittel, um diese knapp 20km-Wanderung zu starten. 5°C, Wolken und starker Wind. So bin ich dann zum Start der „Schleife ohne Namen“ am anderen Ende des Dorfes mit dem Auto gefahren… Aber einmal gestartet, war alles gut und schon bald wurde es ansehnlicher.

The forecast had been promising but it needed a lot of pep talk this morning to start on my 20km hike. 5°C, clouds and a strong wind. So I actually took the car to the start of this „Hike with No Name“, which was only at the other end of the village… But once I got going I was fine and soon things got more agreeable.

Der Weg führte von Barweiler Richtung Wimbach bis zur Brücke(nbaustelle) und von dort entlang des Wirftbach auf einen Höhenrücken zwischen Wimbach und Honerath, unterwegs Richtung Adenau. Ortschaften hat man auf der ganzen Wanderung nur gestreift und manche Abschnitte machten schon den Eindruck, als sei hier lange keiner mehr langgekommen.

The route took me from Barweiler in the direction of Wimbach up until the bridge (under construction) and on along the Wirft creek onto a ridge between Wimbach and Honerath, continuing to Adenau. This hike leaves all villages to be seen from afar and some parts of it did leave the impression of a road less traveled.

Oberhalb von Adenau kam ich zu einem Gedenkstein für Clemens de Lassaulx, der von 1844 bis 1886 Kreisförster in Adenau war und ordentlich aufgeräumt hat: es gab noch nicht mal genügend Brennholz in der Gegend (heute schwer zu glauben), auch zurückzuführen auf extensive Vieh- und Schafhaltung auf Heideflächen. Es kam zu einer Aufforstung mit Kiefern und Fichten im großen Stil.

A little above Adenau I passed this memorial to Clemens de Lassaulx who was the head ranger in Adenau from 1844 to 1886 and really got things back on track: there wasn’t even enough firewood around (hard to believe today), which was also due to extensive cattle and sheep operations on the heaths. He initiated large-scale reforestation projects, mainly with spruce and pine trees.

Der anschließende Eulenweg endet in einem Steilhang im Nichts – ist nicht gepflegt. Ich kam nur mit Hilfe eines anderen Wanderers querfeldein auf den darüberliegenden Wanderweg. Den sollte man besser nicht verlassen. Aber nicht nur wenige Wanderer liefen mir über den Weg:

The „Owl Path“ that followed ended suddenly on a really steep slope – it is not well maintained… or not at all? I needed the help of a fellow hiker to reach the path above that one – which I shouldn’t have left in the first place, as I now know. But not only fellow hikers crossed my path:

Der Zustand der Wanderwege war zumeist okay, aber wenn die Wegbeschreibung sagt, man solle nach 1,4 km rechts auf den Grasweg abbiegen, fragt man sich doch, ob es die richtige Stelle ist:

The paths were usually okay but when the guide says to turn right after 1.4 km onto a grass path which maybe or maybe not looks like this you do wonder whether it’s the right spot after all:

Ganz schön viele Windschäden waren auch zu finden, aktuell und eher ältere Fälle.

There were quite a few places with wind damage, recent and older.

Von Adenau jedenfalls ging es erst etwas Richtung Leimbach, um dann wieder nach Honerath umzuschwenken, wo es u.a. durch ein offenes Tal ging mit einer Pferdekoppel an der anderen. Überhaupt gab es auch viele schöne Aussichten.

From Adenau I continued in the direction of Leimbach, to turn towards Honerath again, where I came through a valley full of meadows. There were quite a few gorgeous views along the whole hike.

Über das Sellbachtal ging es zur Barweiler Mühle und wieder zurück an den Ausgangspunkt in Barweiler. Es waren knapp 20 km, für die ich 5 Stunden gebraucht habe, ohne größere Pausen (dafür war es dann doch zu kalt und windig). Und an der Barweiler Mühle hat die Gaststätte, die letztes Jahr so vielversprechend aufgemacht hat, leider zu.

By way of the Sellbach valley I reached Barweiler Mill and later the starting point in Barweiler. I needed almost exactly 5 hours for the not quite 20 km, without any major breaks (it was a tad too cold and windy for that). And the restaurant that had opened last year at Barweiler Mill was closed again.
