Erstmal ein frohes neues Jahr! Und wie immer am 1. eines Monats so will ich auch heute wieder darüber berichten, wie ich nach und nach versuche, das Plastik aus meinem Haushalt zu verbannen. Und nach so einer durchzechten Nacht (?) schien mir das Thema Kaffee naheligend 🙂 Aber was sollen denn da die Kapseln aus Aluminium, mag sich manch einer wundern? Das liegt nur daran, dass ich rumrecherchiert und mich ein bisschen eingelesen habe – die sind der absolute Untergang und das macht auch Geogre Clooney nicht besser. Bei mir war Kaffee in den letzten Jahren eine mehrfache Schande. Löslich. In Plastikeinzelverpackungen. Und, auch noch von Nestlé. Totales no-go. Doch ich habe mich befreien können!

First of all: Happy New Year! And as has become a habit on this blog, my post on the first of the month will report on my progress in getting the plastic out of my household. And on the morning (*ahem*) after a longish night what better subject to choose than coffee? Yes, you may wonder what the aluminum capsules on the picture are about? Well, if anything, aluminum is worse than plastic and then also I came across a number of issues while reading up for this post – they are the worst and George Clooney doesn’t make it any better. Coffee in my household has been a shame for many years. Instant. Single portion plastic packaging. And, I hate to admit it, Nestlé. Total no-go. But I have freed myself!

Nicht überraschend: ich habe es nicht bereut. Der Kaffee (also Espresso – ich bin ein Latte Macchiato Fan) ist einfach so unsäglich viel leckerer! Als regelmäßige Hallo-Wach-Dosis den lieben angen Tag lang brauche ich ihn nicht, aber so wird der eine am Nachmittag ein echtes Highlight. Und wie das riecht… Ich habe da noch mindestens einen weiteren Schritte vor mir: den Kaffee frisch gemahlen in Papierbeuteln kaufen. Kommt noch.

Unsurprisingly, I have never looked bacl. The coffee (espresso, to be exact – I love latte macchiato) is just so much better. I don’t need coffee on a regular basis from the crack of dawn onwards but the one I have in the afternoon as becoem a real highlight. Just the scent was enough to win me over. There’s still one more step to take: to purchase the coffee in paper bags, freshly ground. Working on it.

Einige fragen sich vielleicht, warum Nestlé gar nicht geht. Dazu müsste ich seitenweise ausführen. Ein paar lowlights: Grundwasser in Flaschen abfüllen und damit die Trinkwasserversorgung in Ländern, die da eh schon unter Druck sind, gefährden. Den Markt mit Pulvermilch überschwemmen in Gegenden, wo es kein sauberes Trinkwasser gibt und damit das Leben von Babies gefährden. Die Nespresso-Müllberge (20.600 Tonnen allein in Deutschland in 2015). Oder werft mal einen Blick auf Listen, was alles Nestlé ist, zum Beispiel hier. Dein Supermarkt ist dann wohl auch ein Filiale von Nestlé? Vielleicht mal ein Ansatz für einen Neujahrsvorsatz, kein Nestlé im Haus? Ich wünsche euch allen ein wunderbares 2018!

Some of you may wonder why I wrote above that Nestlé is a no-go. Well, it would take hours to detail but let me outline a few lowlights: bottle ground water and endanger the drinking water supply in countries that already are under pressure in that respect. Aggressively sell infant formula in countries where there’s no clean water to prepare it and thereby putting infants at risk of death. The coffee capsule trash mountains (20,600 tons in 2015 in Germany alone). Or have a look at the lists of products or brands that are part of the company here. So your supermarket is specialized in Nestlé, too? Maybe that gives you an idea for a new year’s resolution, ban Nestlé from your home? Have a wonderful 2018 everyone!
