Ein Café, das in einer Kirche beheimatet ist und „Steif-wie-ein-Brett“-Yoga anbietet, hat meine sofortige Aufmerksamkeit sicher. Durch einen Insider-Tipp war ich hierher gekommen, ins Absalon auf dem Sønder Boulevard im Stadtteil Vesterbro. Mir wurde gesagt, ein Multimillionär habe sich im Ruhestand entschlossen, seiner Heimat etwas zurückzugeben und diese Kirche in eine Art Nachbarschaftshaus umzuwandeln, wo jeder hinkommen und sich vergnügen kann, sei es bei Brettspielen, Tischtennis, einer Tasse Kaffee zum fairen Preis oder eben zum Yoga oder Tanzen für Kinder zwischen 5 und 7 Jahren.

A café that is located in a church and offers „stiff-as-a-board“-yoga is sure of my immediate rapt attention. I had come here via a recommendation from a local, to the Absalon on Sønder Boulevard in the Vesterbro neighborhood. I was told that some multimillionaire, once retired, decided to give something back to the community and created a community center in this church where everybody is welcome to enjoy, be it board games, table tennis, a cup of coffee at a fair price or the yoga class or dance for children between 5 and 7 years of age.

So war das Publikum auch sehr gemischt: einige Kinder, ein Paar in Rennradfahrerkluft, die ihre Pause mit einer Partie Tischtennis garnierten, zwei Nonnen über Kaffee und Kuchen, ein Backpacker und noch einige mehr. Zum Ende unserer Aufenthalts wurden die Tischtennisplatten weggeräumt und weitere Tische aufgestellt, denn warme Mahlzeiten für wenig Geld gibt es hier auch.

The people we encountered were a mixed bunch: a few kids, a couple wearing cycling gear and who spent their break with a round of table tennis, two nuns having a private coffeeklatsch, a backpacker and a few others. Towards the end of our stay the table tennis tables were stowed away to make room for yet more tables as dinner time was approaching – warm meals are to be had for little money, too.

Wir kamen (zufällig) nochmal zurück, sonntags so um die Mittagszeit, und es war full house – eine wirklich ganz wunderbare Atmosphäre, weil man sich mit wildfremden Leuten an einen Tisch setzt und gar nicht anders kann, als ins Gespräch zu kommen. Die alternative Nutzung von Kirchen ist in katholisch geprägten Teilen Deutschlands ja noch nicht so weit verbreitet… aber ich konnte mich des Eindrucks nicht erwehren, dass das genau das war, was Kirche sein soll. Und dieses wunderbare Café möchte ich der dieswöchigen Sammlung auf Our Beautiful World hinzufügen.

By chance we passed the café again about lunchtime on Sunday and it was absolutely crowded – a really welcoming atmosphere where you sit down at the long table and start to chat with people you’ve never met before because what else should you do? I think that the alternative use of churches is still quite rare in areas of Germany where Catholicism left its mark… but I couldn’t help thinking that this place was exactly what „church“ is about. I’d like to add this wonderful café to this week’s collection over at Our Beautiful World.
