Vielleicht ist es auch nur mein Humor – aber diese Weihnachtsgeschichte ist ein sehr guter Start in einen vielleicht nicht ganz stressfreien Tag. Und nur nicht verlieren, den Humor… Nur noch einmal schlafen!

Das heutige „Kalendertürchen“ ist nicht wirklich weihnachtlich oder winterlich – aber ich finde es bemerkenswert. Gestern Abend bin ich über den derzeit 13-jährigen Luke gestolpert, der aus Langeweile in den Sommerferien mal angefangen hat, sich sein eigenes Mini-Haus im Garten der Eltern zu bauen. Die Sommerferien haben dann nicht dazu gereicht, denn er musste ja erstmal das Geld dafür verdienen, aber er hat das Projekt zuende gebracht. Hier sein Bericht – ab Minute 6 beginnt die Führung durch das Haus:
Today’s post is not really related to Christmas or even winter but I’ve found it remarkable. Last night I chanced upon 13-year old Luke who one summer vacation got so bored he decided to build his own tiny house in his parents‘ backyard. It took longer than that vacation because he first needed to earn the money for his project but he finished it. This is his report – the tour of the house starts about 6 minutes into it:

Es war doch schon lange Zeit für einen weiteren Nostalgie-Post, oder? Aber man kommt ja zu nichts. Jetzt ist es soweit: aus dem fotografischen Nachlass meiner Mutter Eindrücke aus einem Skiurlaub, wahrscheinlich Ende der 1960er Jahre.
It’s been a while since I last posted under the tag „Nostalgia“ – but then I really don’t get around to do anything these days. But here goes: impressions from a vacation skiing in the Alps, probably at the end of the 1960’s as found among my late mother’s slides.
Ich kenne (glaube ich) niemanden auf diesen Fotos – außer meiner Mutter natürlich – aber die Ausrüstung (oder Mangel derselben) fasziniert mich. Beim Anlegen der Ski sehen sie hier ja alle noch tiptop aus – auf der Piste jedoch ist klar: wir sind auf dem Anfängerhügel:
I don’t know anyone on these pictures (I think) – other than my mother, of course – but I find the equipment (or lack thereof) fascinating. Getting set up they all look rather posh – but on the slope it becomes clear that we must be on a bunny hill:

In the nasty weather we’ve had here over the past weeks (when did we last glimpse a bit of blue sky? Six weeks ago??) I feel nothing but envy looking at these pictures:
Oben rechts könnte es sich um Margret J. handeln, eine Freundin meiner Mutter. Oder auch nicht? Jedenfalls war auch hier eine After-Ski-Party angesagt, wobei das Glas ja fast auf einen Trupp Chemie-Studenten schließen ließe – aber wie sollte meine Mutter da reingeraten sein?!
The woman on the picture above (top right) could be my mother’s friend Margret J. Or maybe not? Anyhow, this trip also included after-ski fun, though the glass makes me wonder whether we are looking at a bunch of chemistry students? But how should my mother have ended up amongst them?!

Und wie sich das für einen guten Ski-Kurs gehört, gab’s wohl auch ein Abschlussrennen. Oder sollte das etwa ein größeres Event gewesen sein?
As is customary for a good ski course there seems to have bee a final competition, too. Or maybe it was a somehwat larger event?

Wie ist die Lage bei euch? Volle Vorfreude, eher der totale Stress – oder einfach ein Tag wie jeder andere? Bei mir ist der Advent ja das Highlight, so nach dem Motto „Der Weg ist das Ziel“ und eigentlich kehrt so langsam eher Ruhe ein, weihnachtstechnisch zumindest. Heute schließe ich auch den Fundraiser für das Elisabeth-Hospiz in Lohmar ab: es sind unglaubliche 1.358 Euro zusammengekommen. VIELEN DANK! Auch meinen Helfern! Da werde ich noch was runden – und wer sich spät entscheidet: ich nehme auch schon Spenden für 2018 entgegen 🙂 Habt einen schönen Dienstag!
How are things at your end? Mounting excitement, incredible stress – or just a day like any other? For me, advent is the highlight, along the lines of „half the fun is getting there“ and things are slowly calming down, at least when it comes to Christmas. With this, I also close this year’s fundraiser for the Elisabeth Hospice in Lohmar: the result is an amazing 1.358 Euros. THANKS SO MUCH! To my helpers, too! Dieses Foto ist zugegebenermaßen schon eine Woche alt… und schon nachmittags war die ganze weiße Pracht wieder weg… aber habt ihr das gehört von dem Wahnsinnsschneefall in Alaska? Da fielen in 90 Minuten ungefähr 40 cm Schnee – über ein Meter nach 12 Stunden. Irgendwo unterwegs sein will man dann ja nicht unbedingt, aber während man schön zuhause sitzt?
This picture is a week old… and in the afternoon of that day already this winter wonderland had disappeared again… but have you heard of these heavy snowfalls in Alaska? They had 15 inches (about 40 cm) in 90 minutes – and more than 40 inches (about a meter) after 12 hours. I certainly wouldn’t want to be out on the road in that kind of weather… but while sitting at home, safe and sound?
Das Bild oben ist allerdings nicht aus Alaska, sondern vom Brocken im Harz (so gefunden in der Gruppe Winterdienst-Bilder auf Facebook, Fotos von Lucas Steinhoff). Gefallen sind ca. anderthalb Meter, aber es gibt gigantische Schneeverwehungen:

In Sachen Geschenkverpackung und dem Versuch, langsam aber sicher von den bunten, womöglich glitzernden Papieren umzusteigen auf Packpapier oder gar wiederverwendbare Beutel, habe ich für ein leicht bedrucktes Packpapier von IKEA eine Deko-Idee gehabt, die mich total begeistert. Einen farblichen Akzent setzen.
When it comes to wrapping Christmas presents, I have started to move away from the colorful, even sparkling papers to kraft paper or re-usable bags. I’m going slowly, as there are still papers from years past to put to use, but I have bought this kraft paper that has some print on it at IKEA and had an idea for decoration that I really like: a little handcoloring.

Geht’s euch auch so? Bei mir käme noch der Wintersport dazu… Welche Weihnachtsfilme sind für euch ein Muss – oder auch einfach „nur“ empfehlenswert? Ich oute mich jetzt als Fan von „Liebe braucht keine Ferien“. Aber ohne „Der kleine Lord“ ist die Weihnachtszeit auch um einiges ärmer. Schön finde ich auch die deutsche Produktion „Obendrüber da schneit es“. „Drei Nüsse für Aschenbrödel“ hingegen ist nicht so meins. Schreibe ich und habe plötzlich die Titelmusik im Kopf… Und der Michel muss natürlich sein. Und Astrid Lindgren allgemein. Oi. Und das Wetter passt ja derzeit auch für Fernsehabende! Habt ein schönes Wochenende!
Is that how you feel, too? I would only have to add „watch winter sports“… Which Christmas movies are on your must-see list? I admit that I love „The Holidays“. But Christmas time without „Little Lord Fauntleroy“ is severely lacking, too. There’s also a German movie I like (but I don’t think it’s gone global…). There’s a huge fan community for „Three Wishes Cinderella“ which I am not a part of. That being said, I can’t get rif of its score in my head now… And I couldn’t do without „Emil of Lönneberga“. Or Astrid Lindgren in general. Oi. And the weather around here is perfect really for days spent watching movies! Enjoy your weekend!

Am Wochenende war wieder Kaffeeklatsch-Zeit. Irgendwie wurde alles etwas hektisch – selbst auf das Thema kam ich relativ kurzfristig. Aber mit Unterstützung direkt aus Kuopio wurde es dann doch alles noch was. Und die Mustikka Pulla werden mit Sicherheit eine Wiederholung finden!
This past weekend it was time for my annual Christmas coffeeklatsch again. Somehow it was all very hectic – I decided on a motto with not a lot of time to work on it. But with some support directly from Kuopio it all did come into being. And the mustikka pulla will soon be made again, that’s for sure!

Neben den phänomenalen Mustikka Pulla (Hefebrötchen mit Heidelbeer-Vanille-Füllung, im Foto oben links unten) gab es noch finnische Weihnachtssterne und meine Eigenkreation Birnen-Spekulatius-Cupcakes. Zu sowas kommt es, wenn man plötzlich keine Schokolade mehr mag und voller Begeisterung Spekulatius-Oreos im Edeka entdeckt…
In addition to the phenomenal mustikka pulla (yeast buns with a blueberry-vanilla filling, on the lower left in the picture above) there where Finnish Christmas stars and my own creation of pear-speculaas cupcakes. That’s what happens when all of a sudden you develop a disgust of chocolate and go searching for a substitute and find the speculaas oreos in the supermarket…
