Auf Anregung einer geschätzten und häufig mitwandernden Outdoor-Enthusiastin ging es auf den Traumpfad Virneburgweg, Deutschlands schönsten Wanderweg 2008. Diese Auszeichnung kann ich durchaus nachvollziehen – abwechslungsreiche Wege, beeindruckende Burgruine, schöne Aussichten… der Buchenwald wird in zwei, drei Wochen nochmal wunderbarer sein und wir haben die Rückkehr zur Blütezeit der Heide fest eingeplant.

At the suggestion of an appreciated outdoor entusiast who joins me on my hikes on a regular basis we hiked Traumpfad Virneburgweg, which was awarded „Most Beautiful Hiking Trail in Germany“ in 2008. I can see what the decision for the award was based on – varied paths, impressive castle ruins, gorgeous views… the beech forest will be even more wonderful two or three weeks from now and we have already decided to return for when the heath is in bloom.

Vom Parkplatz aus geht es gleich hoch zur Burgruine, deren älteste Teile auf die 2. Hälfte des 13. Jahrhunderts datieren. Nachdem das Geschlecht Virneburg 1545 ausgestorben war, gab es mehrere Besitzwechsel und im Rahmen derer den Ausbau zum Schloss – ein Inventar von 1605 listet 12 Räume. Bereits 1689 wurde sie dann von französischen Truppen zerstört und befindet sich heute im Besitz des Rheinischen Vereins für Denkmalpflege und Landschaftsschutz. Die auf dem Foto links unterhalb liegende Kapelle wurde Mitte des 14. Jahrhunderts gestiftet.

From the parking lot we are led right up to the castle, the oldest parts of which can be dated to the second half of the 13th century. After the Virneburg dynasty had ended with the death of its last count in 1545 there were several changes of ownership and in the course of these the castle was turned into a palace – an inventory of 1605 lists 12 rooms. It didn’t last long: in 1689 it was destroyed by the French troops and is today owned by the Rhenish Society for the Preservation of Monuments and Landscape. The chapel you see to the lower left of the castle in the picture below was built in the mid-14th century.

Online bin ich u.a. auf diesen Rekonstruktionsversuch gestoßen – da lässt sich die alte Pracht noch etwas besser vorstellen:

Die Heidelandschaften erst auf dem Schafberg und dann im Bereich der Blumenrather Heide luden zum Verweilen ein… von der abgebildeten Bank auf dem Schafberg hat man eine schöne Aussicht auf die Eifelhöhen – ideal für die Mittagspause. Hinweis: wer sich auf die Ausschilderung verlässt sollte im Bereich Blumenrather Heide sehr aufmerksam sein. Ein „rechts abbiegen“ fehlt quasi direkt hinter einer großen Kiefer zu deren Füßen, Stand 24.03.22, ein umgekippter Hochsitz liegt und das nächste Schild ist nahezu komplett ausgeblichen.

The heath landscapes first on the Schafberg and then in the area of the Blumenrather Heide made me want to linger… from the pictured bench on the Schafberg you have a nice view of the Eifel heights – ideal for the lunch break. Note: a sign „turn right“ is missing right after a large pine tree underneath which you currently (as seen March 24, 2022) find a destroyed high perch, and the sign following that is faded to almost white.

Hier wie an immer mehr Stellen ist das Thema Waldsterben akut – über 80% der Bäume in Rheinland-Pfalz sind geschädigt, innerhalb von 3 Jahren sind 7,8 Mio Bäume abgestorben. Im Waldzustandsbericht 2021 ist außerdem nachzulesen, dass die Absterberate 2021 auffällig hoch war – was darauf zurückgeführt wird, dass es durch die drei vorangegangenen zu trockenen und zu warmen Jahre offenbar zu erheblichen Nachwirkungen kommt.

The trail also has a section where forest decline is very obvious – more than 80% of trees in Rhineland-Palatinate are considered as damaged, within 3 years 7.8 million trees have died. The 2021 report on the state of the state’s forests mentions that the rate was remarkably high in 2021 – which is thought to be caused by the fact that the three preceding years were all too warm and too dry and that only now we see the consequences.

Aber die schönen Aussichten überwiegen eindeutig. Bald wird’s warm genug, um mein Allzwecktuch irgendwo für eine ordentliche Siesta auszubreiten 🙂

But the gorgeous views far outweigh the rest. Soon it will be warm enough to put my all-purpose blanket down for a proper siesta somewhere 🙂
