Seit Jahresbeginn war es hier komisch still – das hatte verschiedene Gründe. In den letzten zwei Wochen jedoch den, dass ich jede freie Minute den Olympischen Spielen in PyeongChang gewidmet habe. Jetzt ist die Sonne untergegangen über den Spielen (und gestern über der Eifel) – aber ich brauchte noch einen Moment, mich von diesem Wahnsinnseishockey-Finale heute Morgen zu erholen. Was war das ein Krimi. Und es hat bei mir länger gedauert, als bei den Spielern, die Silbermedaille feiern zu können – es war SO – NAH – DRAN! Den Blutdruck zu messen habe ich mich nicht getraut und meine Stimme hat sich auch noch nicht wieder ganz erholt. Die letzten beiden Wochen im Überblick:

It’s been eerily quiet here since the new year started – due to a number of reasons. The past two weeks were spent watching the Olympic Games in PyeongChang every free minute I had. Now the sun has set over the Games (and yesterday on the Eifel) – but I needed a moment to recover from that fantastic hockey final this morning. What a thriller. I think it took me way longer than the players to realize that this silver medal was a miracle and just as good as gold – but IT – WAS – SO – CLOSE! I didn’t dare check my blood pressure and my voice isn’t quite back to normal, either. The past two weeks at a glance:

Das letzte Foto kommt meinem jetzige Zustand wohl am nächsten… es ist ziemlich genau erschütternd 30 Jahre her, dass mein Olympiawahnsinn Außenstehenden zum ersten Mal so richtig bewusst wurde. Da das damals auch mit der gleichen Zeitverschiebung und den damit einhergehenden Nachtschichten vonstatten ging (Seoul 1988), hat die damals entstandene Zusammenfassung meiner Klassenlehrerin nichts an Aussagekraft eingebüßt:

The last picture probably gets closest to how I currently feel… It was about 30 years ago that my Olympics mania became apparent to people outside of my family. It was Seoul 1988, so I was dealing with the same time zone and the respective night shifts. The following synopsis my teacher made at the time is still powerful:

Aber diese Spiele hatten noch einen ganz besonderen Charme. Durch einen an sich eher unerfreulichen Besuch in den USA im Januar habe ich eine junge Südkoreanerin kennengelernt, die kurz nach dem Beginn der Spiele wieder nach Hause geflogen ist. Ich konnte sie nicht nur davon überzeugen, dass man da dabei gewesen sein muss. Auch nicht nur davon, dass Biathlon mit die coolsten Wettbewerbe zu bieten hat. Nein. Nein, nein. Ich muss so überzeugend gewesen sein, dass sie entschied, die Deutschen anzufeuern – und wie!

But these Games had a very particular charm. During an unplanned visit in the US in January I got to meet a young woman from South Korea who returned home shortly after the Games had begun. I didn’t only manage to persuade her that she had to go and see a race – any race, really. And not only that biathlon is among the most thrilling sports to watch. No. No, no. Apparently, I was so convincing that she decided to root for the Germans:

Haemin blieb uns bis zum (Eishockey-)Schluss heute Morgen auf dem heimischen Sofa treu – die Fan-Base war also wirklich breit aufgestellt. Wir sind jetzt lose für einen Biathlon-Weltcup in Europa 2019 verabredet… Oberhof, Ruhpolding oder doch Oslo? Die Planung kann beginnen!

Haemin was a loyal fan up until the hockey final this morning on the couch – the fan base was truly diverse! We have now started to plan for a World Cup experience in Europe 2019… Oberhof, Ruhpolding oder maybe Oslo? I can’t wait!
