Da ich ja schonmal in Budapest war, hatte ich mir für Samstag einen Ausflug ins nördlich von Budapest gelegene Städtchen Szentendre vorgenommen. Nicht, dass man in Budapest nicht noch Wochen neue Dinge entdecken könnte. Aber ich wollte das mit einer Fährfahrt auf der Donau verbinden. Sobald ich auf dem Wasser bin, stellt sich das ultimative Urlaubsgefühl ein… da reicht schon das Übersetzen mit der Autofähre von Godesberg nach Königswinter.

As I had been to Budapest once before, I had decided on a little day trip to picturesque Szentendre upriver. I mean, it’s not as if Budapest didn’t still have enough things to discover for weeks to come. But I wanted to combine that trip with a little cruise on the Danube. As soon as I’m out on water, I feel like I’m on vacation. Usually, it’s enough to just take the car ferry across the Rhine from Godesberg to Königswinter.

Für die Hinfahrt hatte ich mich allerdings für den Pendelzug HEV entschieden. Ich bin ja grundsätzlich ein Freund des öffentlichen Nahverkehrs und Budapest ist wohl die in dieser Hinsicht am besten ausgestattete Stadt, die ich bisher kennengelernt habe. Ich war im Hotel Gellért untergekommen. Vor der Haustür fahren die Straßenbahnen 19 und 41 im 5-Minuten-Takt zum Batthyány tér (350 HUF = 1,15 €). Dort startet dann der Pendelzug, der alle 20 Minuten fährt und etwa 40 Minuten unterwegs ist (610 HUF = 2,00 €).

For the outbound journey I had chosen the HEV commuter train, though. I love to travel public transport and Budapest is by far the best equipped city in that respect that I’ve visited so far. I was staying at Hotel Gellért. Right outside, trams 19 and 41 leave every 5 minutes to Batthyány tér (350 HUF = 1,15€/1,57 USD). From there the commuter train leaves every 20 minutes on its 40-minute journey to Szentendre (610 HUF = 2,00€/2,74 USD).

Ich wollte früh los, um das Städtchen ohne Menschenmassen zu sehen und zu fotografieren. Das klappte auch – um 8:38 Uhr saß ich im Zug und alles lief einwandfrei. Was mir in diesem alten Teil der Stadt direkt ins Auge fiel war, dass auf engstem Raum vier Kirchen verschiedener Glaubensrichtungen zu finden waren: drei griechisch-orthodoxe (der Ort war sogar mal Bischofssitz) und eine katholische. Da frage ich mich schon, wo die ganze Klientel für all die Bauten mal hergekommen sein soll.

I wanted to be there bright and early so I would get to see the place (and take pictures of it) without the crowds. It worked – I was on the 8:38 train and everything worked according to plan. The first thing I noticed when I got to the old part of town was that there were four churches of different denominations almost huddled together: three Greek-orthodox ones and one Catholic. I couldn’t help but wonder where the clientele for all these churches should have come from… to warrant the construction of all these places of worship.

Die Stadt wird auch als Künstlerstadt beschrieben, es gibt Galerien, Studios, Geschäfte mit Kunsthandwerk etc. (natürlich auch, und nicht zu knapp, die üblichen Souvenirläden). Nachteil der frühen Anreise war allerdings, dass anfänglich alles noch zu war… dass ich mir darüber hinaus auch noch einen Tag mit einem Kunsthandwerkermarkt auf den Straßen ausgesucht hatte, stellte ich erst nach Mittag fest! Der Verkaufsraum der Familie Kovács, die seit 1878 (?) indigogefärbte Stoffe mit wunderbaren weißen Mustern herstellt, war ein halbes Museum.

The town is like an artists‘ community, there are galleries, studios, little boutiques with arts and crafts products etc. (of course you can also find the usual tourist traps and quite a few of them, too). Getting there so early had the disadvantage that almost everything was still closed… I noticed only about noon that I had chosen a day with an arts and crafts market on the streets! The sales room of the Kovács family who have blue-dyed since 1878 (?) with wonderful patterns in white was almost a museum.

In den wirklich SCHMALEN Gassen bin ich gerne rumgestrolcht, denn da war es wunderbar kühl – auch in Ungarn waren es heiße Tage. Unglaublich, aber wahr: durch diese schmalen Gassen und um diverse Kirchen herum war darüber hinaus ein Mountainbike-Rennen im Gange…

I loved to stroll through these REALLY narrow alleyways as it was nice and cool – it was really hot in Hungary, too. You wouldn’t believe it but there was also a mountain bike race going on in these tiny lanes around a few of the churches!

Während der Erkundung des Donauufers hörte ich auf einmal wunderbare Musikklänge und dachte zuerst, da hätte einer die Musik laut aufgedreht hat und sei womöglich beim wöchentlichen Reinemachen. Aber nein, das war live. Es muss eine Musikschule gewesen sein. Auf der Veranda waren etwa 10 Querflötistinnen und eine Pianistin zugange. Der Tag ließ echt nichts zu wünschen übrig.

While I was discovering the riverbank-side of the town I suddenly heard wonderful music and at first I thought somebody had turned it up high while doing the weekly cleaning or something. But no, it was live! I think it must have been a music school. Out on the verandah there was a pianist with about 10 girls playing German flutes (didn’t know they were called that!). This day really left nothing to wish for!

Zum Ende hin war ich dann noch im Marzipan-Haus der Firma Szamós. Die Produkte hatte ich ja bereits bei meinem letzten Besuch kennengelernt – nun auch das erste Geschäft. Und den Museum-Shop… und es war viel zu heiß, um da großartig einzukaufen!!! Das obere Stockwerk zeigte alle möglichen Konstrukte aus Marzipan – wobei ich zuerst dachte, ich hätte mich zu Mme. Tussauds verlaufen!

Towards the end of my stay I went to see the Szamos House of Marzipan. I had first gotten to know their products during my visit to Budapest in 2011 – and now got a view of their first store. And the museum store… and it was much too hot to buy much!!! On the second floor there were all kinds of creations made of marzipan to admire… though I first thought I had mistakenly entered Mme. Toussauds!

Und weil es hier schon lange kein Freebie mehr gab, gibt’s jetzt eins! Tja und nun zum schwierigen Teil, der Donaufahrt (2500 HUF = 8,23€/einfache Fahrt). Also, wer den Mittelrhein zwischen Bingen und Bonn kennt, sollte – zumindest auf diesem Teilstück – keine großen Erwartungen an die Donau haben. Es war eher… hm… langweilig. Entweder nur bewaldet mit der einen oder anderen Überlandleitung, dann eher Plattenbau oder ungefähr der Rhein bei Wesseling. Und in Budapest selbst bin ich in Höhe des Parlaments schon wieder ausgestiegen.

Now for the tough part, the cruise on the Danube (2500 HUF = 8,23€/11,22 USD one way). Well, if you know the Middle Rhine between Bingen and Bonn you should not have high expectations on a cruise here – at least on that stretch between Szentendre and Budapest. It was rather… boring. Either woods reaching all the way to the water with the odd overhead power line crossing, then not exactly charming apartment buildings or industrial areas. I already got off near the parliament in Budapest so didn’t see much of the city either…

Dann lieber nochmal ein Blick auf außergewöhnliches Kunsthandwerk, wie die Eier oben! Und nun macht’s gut!
