Das wird mal ein Beitrag, in dem die Fotos nichts mit dem Text zu tun haben. Sie sind zwar am gleichen Tag entstanden, aber aus einer spontanen Laune heraus, die mich nochmal zum Weihnachtsmarkt und auf den Sky Liner gebracht hat. Aber eigentlich geht es um das:

This is going to be a post where the pictures are unrelated to the text. They were made on the same day but on a spontaneous return to the Christmas market where I wanted to go up on the new Sky Liner after all. But this post is really about this:

Im Briefkasten lag ein Paketschein – abgegeben beim Nachbarn drei Häuser weiter. Da wird viel angenommen und das ist eigentlich total praktisch. Jetzt allerdings wurde ich in 48 Stunden sicher zehnmal vorstellig und traf nie jemanden an. Schon der 22. Dezember… ich werde nervös. Was, wenn die in Urlaub sind? Also nochmal hin, zum zweiten Mal allein an diesem Vormittag.

There was a notice in my mailbox: a package had been handed over to a neighbor three houses down the street. They accept a lot of packages all year round and it usually comes in very handy. This time, though, I went there about 10 times in 48 hours and no-one ever answered the door. And it’s December 22 already… I’m starting to get a little nervous. What if they already left for a Christmas vacation or something? Well, let’s try a second time this morning.

Aus dem Hoftor getreten steht das gelbe Auto eine Paketdienstes direkt vor mir, der freundliche Zusteller einen Turm Pakete balancierend. Um nicht noch einen Paketschein zu kassieren frage ich: „Ist da auch eins für mich dabei?“ und nenne meinen Namen. „Nein, heute nicht,“ sagt er ohne zu zögern, „aber vor zwei oder drei Tagen – das habe ich in der 16 abgegeben, haben Sie das geholt?“ Ich war total perplex, der hat seinen Laden echt im Griff. „Ehrlich gesagt versuche ich das seitdem erfolglos, bin auch gerade wieder auf dem Weg dahin.“

When I open the gate to the street there’s a large yellow delivery truck parked right in front of the house and the friendly delivery guy is balancing a tower of packages. To be sure not to get another notice in the mailbox I ask: „Do you have one for me, too?“ and add my name. „No, not today,“ he says without missing a beat, „but two or three days ago and I handed it over to the lady in no. 16 – have you picked that up?“ I was completely dumbfounded, he really knows what he’s doing. „Frankly, I have tried a zillion times but no one’s ever home – was going to try again just now.“

Ein entsetzter Blick: „Oh, da ist keiner mehr, die sind schon weg! Aber da können Sie in dem Restaurant an der Ecke mal fragen, oder im Sushi-Laden, die sind irgendwie verbandelt, vielleicht können die helfen.“ Die Örtlichkeiten hatten zwar beide noch geschlossen und letztlich klingelte ich die anderen Hausbewohner durch und das Paket wurde mir ausgehändigt… aber dieser Paketzusteller hat mich echt nachhaltig beeindruckt. Erstens sowieso und dann in dieser sehr stressigen Zeit. Wow. Da hat einer ganz offensichtlich einen Job, der für ihn gemacht ist und der ihm Spaß macht. Und ich sitze hier noch 2 Tage und starre ein Paket im Weihnachtsdress an und frage mich, was da wohl drin sein könnte!

He looks at me terrified: „Oh, they’re not there anymore, they’ve left! But you could check at the restaurant on the corner or the sushi place down that street… they are connected somehow, maybe they can help.“ The places both hadn’t opened for the day yet and in the end I just rang everybody’s doorbells at no. 16 and someone was in fact able to give me that package… But this delivery guy really impressed me. Quite generally, to begin with, and then in this most hectic time of year. Wow. Someone seems to be having the job they were cut out for and be enjoying it. While I will now sit here two more days and stare at that package in Christmas finery and wonder what’s inside!
