Ist es denn zu fassen – schon wieder ein Monat rum! Und wenn ich ganz, ganz ehrlich bin, bin ich sehr froh, dass so langsam der Herbst kommt und man mal wieder mit Genuss eine heiße Tasse Tee trinken kann. Und wie gut sich geschlossene Schuhe anfühlen! An der Plastikfront hingegen gab es im vergangenen Monat keine großen Änderungen meinen Haushalt betreffend – aber ich habe viele weitere Impulse bekommen, die ich gerne mit euch teilen möchte.

I can’t believe it – another month just flew by. And if I may be brutally honest, I am more than happy that fall is headed our way and that I can have a steaming hot cup of tea and actually enjoy it. And how lovely to wear proper shoes again! When it comes to reducing plastic in my household… I wasn’t able to make any major changes this past month – but I have been collecting ideas that I would like to share.

Auf tauschticket.de zum Beispiel bot jemand gehäkelte Kosmetikpads aus Baumwolle an – die man einfach in die Waschmaschine gibt und wiederverwendet. Da bin ich nun mangels Kosmetiknutzung nicht der geeignete Kunde, aber die Idee finde ich gut. Und wer mal einen vergnüglichen Bericht über jemanden lesen möchte, der so richtig ernst macht, kann das bei „Tupperdosen-Tetris und Käsetheken-Fiaskos“ tun.

On the German platform tauschticket.de someone offered crocheted cotton pads for make-up removal – which you can wash and re-use. For lack of using make-up I won’t be getting these but I liked the idea.

Ein lieber Freund der kürzlich zu Besuch in Bonn war, hat mir das Buch „Besser leben ohne Plastik“ geschenkt. Die komplette Lektüre ist mir noch nicht gelungen, aber mir gefällt, wie Hintergründe erläutert und Vorschläge gemacht werden. So wurde ich allerdings auch informiert, dass Waschnüsse mittlerweile so weit verbreitet genutzt werden, dass die Menschen in den Herkunftsländern auf chemische Produkte umsteigen müssen. Also auch nicht ideal. Meine nächsten Versuche werden sich im Bereich Bad und Haushalt abspielen – und werde dann hoffentlich bald berichten können.

A dear friend who was in Bonn recently for a visit gave me the book „Besser leben ohne Plastik“ („A better life without plastic“… though I doubt you can find a translation). I haven’t managed to read it cover to cover but I like how it gives background information and then practical advice. By way of reading (parts of) it, I was also informed that the use of wash berries is so widespread by now that people in the countries of origin don’t have any left and need to use chemical alternatives. So that’s less than ideal. My next experiments will be from the bathroom and household chapter and I hope to be able to report on that soon.

Abschließend gibt es noch einen Aktionstipp: am 15. September ist der World Clean Up Day und so ziemlich überall gibt es Aktionen. Für die Nordlichter unter euch: der NABU organisiert den Coastal Clean-up Day. Solltet ihr entlang des Rheins wohnen oder einen Ausflug ins Auge fassen, könnt ihr am Rhine Clean Up Day teilnehmen. Hier findet ihr die Ansprechpartner für die jeweiligen Städte.

Before I let you go, let me draw your attention to the World Clean Up Day on September 15, 2018. There are events in all kinds of places (I have checked only for those around here). One multi-country event is the Rhine Clean Up Day which is done in the Netherlands, Germany, Austria (?!) and Switzerland. The organizers still seem to be looking for focal persons in France and Liechtenstein in case you are around and interested.
