Endlich wieder mal ein Beitrag zum Thema Plastik! Wirklich ruhiger ist es bei mir zwar weiterhin nicht, aber ich habe gesammelt über die vergangenen Monate… Material ist also vorhanden. Das Bild oben ist eine Süßwarenbar, wie sie in so ziemlich jedem schwedischen Supermarkt zu finden ist (vielleicht nicht immer in dieser Größe!). Da packt man ein, was man möchte – in Papierbeutel. Noch besser wäre es natürlich, wenn gar keine abgepackten Süßigkeiten mehr im Angebot wären…
Finally another post about plastic or rather the avoidance of it! It has not become any less stressful here, to be honest, but I have been hoarding ideas over the past months… So there are some things to post at least. The picture above shows a candy bar as you find it in every supermarket in Sweden (maybe not everywhere quite as large). You bag what you want – and the bags are paper bags. Right, it would be even better if no other candy was available…
Die Frage, die sich mir stellt ist, warum man sowas in Bonn noch suchen muss. Ich kann nicht für Deutschland als ganzes sprechen, aber irgendwie habe ich das ungute Gefühl, dass das Vorkommen insgesamt auch noch sehr gering ist. Auch im Irak (wenn auch in einem eher sehr luxuriösen Supermarkt, siehe oben), gibt es gewisse Waren zum Selbstabwiegen – ob nun in Plastik oder Papier sei mal dahingestellt. Oder die Auswahl aus einer großen Bio-Supermarktkette in den USA (unten). Das ist ja also offenbar alles und so ziemlich überall möglich.
I can’t help but wonder why you have to really, really go around and look for something like this in Bonn. I can’t speak for Germany as a whole but I have a feeling the overall incidence is not much higher. Even in Iraq (though admittedly in a high-end place, see above) there was a supermarket with a self-service section – whether the products are put into plastic or paper bags I don’t know (very likely plastic). Or the variety in an organic foods supermarket in the USA (below). Apparently, it is feasible, so why are we taking so long?
Schweden ist wegen meines kürzlich genossenen Urlaubs dort noch im Fokus bei mir. Vor einigen Monaten hatte ich einen Bericht über einen neuen Freizeittrend dort gelesen: Plogging. Da verbindet man Jogging mit Müll sammeln („plocka upp“ = aufheben). Hier gibt’s auch ein Video dazu. Beim Joggen habe ich das noch nicht getestet, aber an einem klitzekleinen, gar nicht großartig vermüllt aussehenden Strand in Schweden einfach mal wenige Minuten damit verbracht. Es wurde eine Tüte voll, von Plastiksoldaten über Einmalplastiktüten zu undefinierbaren, siebähnlichen Behältnissen mit ca. 17 Q-Tips drin.
As I was recently vacationing in Sweden, the country is still somewhat „in focus“ here. A few months ago I saw a report on an exercise trend there: Plogging. You combine jogging with trash collecting („plocka upp“ = pick up). You’ll find a little video about it here. I haven’t tried it yet but I ran a little experiment on a tiny beach in Sweden that didn’t even look all that trashed: I collected trash for less than 5 minutes and ended up with a bag full, plastic toy soldiers, single-use plastic bags and a strange, strainer-like container filled with q-tips and other stuff.
Aber eigentlich soll es ja um die Vermeidung von Plastik(müll) gehen und da hat Nicole im Mai auf eine „Replace Plastic“-App verwiesen. Damit scannt man im Supermarkt bar codes von Produkten ein, die unnötig in Plastik verpackt sind (zum Beispiel Gurken). Per Mail wird der Hersteller über den Wunsch des Kunden nach weniger Plastik informiert. Zur Handhabung kann ich als Handyverweigerer nicht viel sagen, aber schaut es euch doch mal an auf dem Blog von Sophie hier. Genug Ideen für diesen Monat?! Hier gibt’s noch was: beteiligt euch doch an dieser Petition, die 50.000 Unterschriften braucht, damit das Thema „weniger Plastik in den Supermärkten“ im Bundestag überhaupt mal diskutiert wird.

Nicole introduced the „Replace Plastic“ app. You use it in the supermarket when you come across a prodcut that is wrapped in unnecessary plastic (say a cucumber). You scan the bar code and the company will be informed via an e-mail that consumers wish to see the plastic removed. As I still refuse to use a mobile phone I can’t tell you whether it’s good or not… and can’t have you check it out yourselves as it seems to be German – I could not for the life of me find an English-language article or video about it. 😦 Enough ideas for one month, though?!

2018 war bislang ein wenig kreatives Jahr und das ist nie ein gutes Zeichen.
