Na, wer hätte das gedacht? Nachdem mein Netbook mir den Dienst versagt hatte, habe ich zum x-ten Mal den Akku entfernt, wieder versucht hochzufahren – und er tut es anstandslos. Dieses Mal allerdings auf Meeresniveau und so langsam habe ich einen Verdacht: das Netbook verträgt die Höhe ebenso wenig wie ich. Denn wie mir einfiel, machte es vor knapp drei Jahren das gleiche Theater… auf über 2.000 Meter Höhe. Wie auch immer, ich hoffe, dass es weiter kooperiert und werde weiter, nachholend, berichten.

Who would have thought? After the netbook had died on me, I took out the battery for the umpteenth time and tried booting again – and it does as if nothing had ever happened before. This time we are at sea level, though, and I have a suspicion: the netbook doesn’t like higher elevations, just like its owner! Because I remember it did the same thing almost three years ago in Indonesia… when we were up at about 2,000 meters/ 6,500 feet. Anyhow, I hope it continues to cooperate and will start reporting again, picking up where I left.

Am Nachmittag des 24.01. waren wir in Kandy angekommen, einer ehemaligen Königsstadt am gleichnamigen (künstlich angelegten) See im Hochland. Dort steht der berühmte Zahntempel, aber den haben wir uns für später aufgehoben. Noch am gleichen Abend besuchten wir eine Aufführung der traditionellen Kandy-Tänze. Allerdings muss ich sagen, dass mir daran die Kostüme am besten gefielen. Da darüber hinaus auch alle Fotos unscharf geworden sind, springe ich gleich zum Folgetag, den wir vormittags im Botanischen Garten im nahegelegenen Peradeniya verbracht haben.

We arrived in Kandy in the afternoon of January 24. It’s another old royal city in the highlands on the (artificial) lake of the same name. It is mostly known for the tooth temple but we kept that for later. That very same day we went to a performance of the traditional Kandy Dance. I have to say, though, that the most impressive about it were the costumes of the performers. In addition to that all pictures are blurred so let’s just move on to the morning of the following day which we spent at the Botanical Gardens in nearby Peradeniya.

Der Botanische Garten ist laut Reiseführer der zweitgrößte in Asien – und so haben wir auch sicher ein Drittel gar nicht gesehen. Es war viel los, denn es war ein Feiertagswochenende, aber bald nach dem Eingang hatten sich die Massen verlaufen.

According to my guide book these Botanical Gardens are the second largest in Asia – and I would guess we saw only about two thirds of it. Huge crowds were at the entry gates as it was a holiday weekend but after only a few minutes walking the crowds had dispersed.

Am Abend vorher hatten wir in unserem Hotel mit einem britischen Ehepaar am Tisch zu Abend gegessen und unter anderem unterhielten wir uns darüber, welche positiven Aspekte (mit anhaltender Wirkung) man wohl dem „kolonialen Treiben“ des Königreichs in Sri Lanka abgewinnen könnte. Die Zugverbindungen fielen uns ein, die offenbar gut funktionierende Post und einiges mehr – der Botanische Garten kam uns allerdings nicht in den Sinn. Wie wir aber sahen, erfreute er sich auch unter Sri Lankern einer außerordentlichen Beliebtheit.

The night before we had dinner at our hotel with a couple from the UK and among others we talked about what positive (and long-lasting) aspects there could possibly be about the achievements of colonialism in Sri Lanka. We thought about the railway system, the postal service which apparently functions really well and a few more things – but we didn’t think about the Botanical Gardens. But as we could very clearly see it was much admired by all the Sri Lankan visitors as well.

Bei unserem Rundgang kam es an einer Stelle (die sich dann ziemlich lang zog) zu einem wahnsinnigen Gezeter – wir hatten die Flughundkolonie erreicht. Die hingen zu tausenden in den Bäumen und sahen aus wie Fledermäuse, nur, dass sie auch über Tag rumgeflogen sind und sich hängenderweise in der Hitze häufig mit einem Flügel Luft zugefächert haben. In der Luft konnte man in der grellen Sonne das Skelett in den Flügeln durchscheinen sehen. Kurz kam uns der Gedanke, dass man es wohl lieber nicht erleben möchte, dass die in irgendeine Panik geraten und man mittendrin steht…

At some point during our walk (and that „point“ went on and on) we heard lots of noise from up above – we had reached a colony of „flying dogs“. They were resting in the trees in their thousands and looked like bats, only that they were active during day time and were using one of their wings as a fan in the heat. When they were flying, you could actually see the bones in their parchment-like wings against the bright sunlight. We briefly considered what might happen should they be gripped by panic while we were right there but decided to drop the subject…
