In die für die Stadt namensgebende Festung (und Daseinsberechtigung) kamen wir am wahrscheinlich einzigen Tag des Jahres, an dem es tausende andere auch taten: am schwedischen Nationalfeiertag, dem 6. Juni. (Ich kann kaum glauben, dass das fast einen Monat her ist…) Dieser ist auch als Tag der schwedischen Flagge bekannt und entwickelte sich im Laufe des 19. Jahrhunderts. Hintergrund ist die Auflösung der Union mit Dänemark und damit die Selbstständigkeit des Landes. Mit der Krönung von Gustav Wasa an jenem Tag 1523 wurde das besiegelt. Erst seit 2005 allerdings ist es ein arbeitsfreier Tag.

We finally made it to the fortress that gave Karlsborg its name and raison d’être on what is likely the only day of the year when thousands of others make it, too: on Swedish National Day, June 6. (I can’t believe it’s already been almost a month…) The day is also known as the day of the Swedish flag and came into being during the course of the 19th century. The reason for the day lies much further back in history: in 1523 the union with Denmark was dissolved and thus Sweden became independent. The coronation of Gustav Wasa on June 6 that year sort of sealed the deal. It took until 2005, though, for it to become a bank holiday.

Das letzte Mal in solchen Menschenmengen unterwegs war ich wohl… auf einem Weihnachtsmarkt 2019? Das erstaunlichste war: es fühlte sich nur sehr kurz, wenn überhaupt, komisch an. Insgesamt war es eine Mischung aus Kirmes ohne Fahrgeschäfte, tatsächlich vergleichsweise vielen Fahnen, einer Bühne mit verschiedensten Programmpunkten, Essensstände mit unfassbaren Schlangen (ich musste feststellen, dass Organisation nicht zu den Kernkompetenzen der Schweden zu gehören scheint 😉 ), Führungen in diversen Festungsbereichen, Ständen des Militärs… und dann ein Bereich mit den hier weit verbreiteten amerikanischen Straßenkreuzern. Man hört: Platz drei gleich hinter den USA und Kuba, in Sachen Straßenkreuzer pro Einwohner.

I think I have to go back to some Christmas market in 2019 maybe to remember being among such crowds? The most unexpected part: it felt strange only very briefly, if at all. Generally, it was a mixture of a funfair without the rides, really a lot of flags, a stage with all kinds of performances, food stalls with queues like I’ve never seen before (I came to the conclusion that organisation is not one of the core competencies of the Swedish 😉 ), guided tours of several parts of the fortress, the Swedish military presenting all kinds of equipment, services, trainings… and then an area for the exhibition of American road cruisers. Rumor has it that Sweden ranks third right after the US and Cuba in number of road cruisers per capita.

Das Gelände ist sehr weitläufig und eigentlich haben wir erstmal nur einen kleinen Teil gesehen. Man kann sich fragen, wie es zu dieser riesigen Anlage im „Nichts“ kam: nach dem Verlust von Finnland und Åland an Russland im Dritten Russisch-Schwedischen Krieg 1808/09 fand sich Stockholm geografisch in einer ziemlich exponierten Lage wieder und es wurde nach einem neuen Standort für das Militär gesucht, inkl. einem Rückzugsort für die Königsfamilie. Der Bau begann 1819 und endet 90 Jahre später – 1909. Mit Bauende war die Anlage quasi schon veraltet und nahezu überflüssig und wurde 1928 stillgelegt.

The area is really large und at first we only saw a small part of it. One might wonder how this huge complex in the boondocks came about: Sweden lost Finland and Åland to Russia in the Third Russian-Swedish war of 1808/09 and as a consequence Stockholm found itself rather exposed geographically, so it was decided to find another base for the military and also a secure retreat for the royal family. Construction started in 1819 and took 90 years – until 1909. It was thus old-fashioned already when it was finally ready for service and basically obsolete and was decommissioned in 1928.

Ich war kurz auf dem Westwall unterwegs – man kommt sich je nach Blickrichtung vor, wie mitten in einem Naturreservat. Und ja, ich finde überall Lupinen, mir entgeht keine.

I took a brief stroll on the west wall – depending on which way you look, it feels as if you are in a nature reserve. And yes, I find lupines everywhere, I don’t miss a one.

Das Fest endete gegen 16 Uhr und es leerte sich schlagartig. Nach einer kurzen Pause zuhause sind wir dann nochmal zurück – für den Spaziergang, die fantastische Abendstimmung und weitere Eindrücke der Festungsanlage, die auf einer Landzunge namens Vanäs liegt. Deren Namen trug sie auch bis 1832, als man entschied, sie in Karlsborg umzubenennen – zu Ehren Karls XIII.

The festivities came to an end at about 4 p.m. and it seemed that within minutes people were gone. After a short break at home we returned – for a stroll, the breathtaking atmosphere of the evening and a few more impressions of the fortress which is situated on a promontory called Vanäs. It was named after it in the beginning but in 1832 it was decided to change it to Karlsborg in honor of Karl XIII.

In diesem parkähnlich anmutenden Bereich liegt einerseits die königliche Villa (1823), sowie das Garnisonskrankenhaus (1879/81) – eine aus drei Gebäuden bestehende Anlage, sowie einem kleinen, etwas abseits gelegenen Gebäude, das die Pathologie beherbergte.

Der 1892 erbaute Leuchtturm ist auch Postkartenmaterial, achteckig, holzverkleidet und mit einer Bank auf der dem See zugewandten Seite (wieder so eine Buch und Thermoskannen-Stelle).

Built in 1892, the lighthouse is also postcard material, octagonal, wood-clad and with a bench on the side facing the lake (yet another book and thermos spot).

So ganz kann ich mich noch nicht von diesem Abed trennen…
