„Wo fährst du hin?“ bzw. „Ööööhhh, ich weiß nicht…“ waren alternativ die Reaktionen auf meine Feststellung, dass ich zum Sommerfest des Elisabeth Hospiz in Lohmar fahren würde und das Interesse an einer Begleitung auslotete. Es schien offenbar kein gutes Konzept für einen Sonntagnachmittag zu sein. Und während dann im Gespräch mit vielen Menschen bei leckerem Kuchen und Grillbuffet, sowie guter Musik der Nachmittag an mir vorbeirauschte, kamen mir die Fragen wieder in den Sinn, die ich jedes Jahr im Rahmen des Basars/Fundraisers (Save the date: 27.11.23!) gestellt bekomme…

„Where are you going?“ or „Ahem, I don’t know…“ respectively were the reactions when I mentioned I was going to the summer party at Elisabeth Hopice in Lohmar and wondered whether people were interested to come along. Apparently, it didn’t come across as a feasible concept for a Sunday afternoon. And while said afternoon just breezed past me talking to people over yummy cake, a barbecue and good music, I remembered the questions that always pop up around the annual fundraiser (save the date: November 27, 2023!)…

Was genau ist eigentlich ein Hospiz? So als etwas technische Definition ausgedrückt ist es „eine stationäre Einrichtung zur medizinischen, pflegerischen, psycho-sozialen und seelsorgerischen Betreuung von schwerstkranken, sterbenden Menschen und ihnen Nahestehenden.“ Dabei wird besonderer Fokus darauf gelegt, dass alle Erlebensbereiche eines Menschen und die daraus erwachsenden Bedürfnisse und Wünsche Berücksichtigung finden – also körperliche, geistige, soziale und spirituelle. Cicely Saunders, Begründerin der modernen Hospizbewegung und Palliativmedizin, hat es wie folgt zusammengefasst:

Sie sind wichtig, weil Sie eben Sie sind. Sie sind bis zum letzten Augenblick Ihres Lebens wichtig und wir werden alles tun, damit Sie nicht nur in Frieden sterben, sondern auch bis zuletzt leben können.

What is a hospice really? If you put it technically, it’s „an inpatient facility for medical, nursing, psycho-social and pastoral care of terminally ill people and those close to them.“ Their particular focus is to cater to all spheres of experience and the needs and desires that arise from them – physical, mental, social and spiritual. Cicely Saunders, founder of the modern hospice movement and palliative care sums it up as follows:

You matter because you are you. You matter to the last moment of your life, and we will do all we can, not only to help you die peacefully, but also to live until you die.

Wieso sammelst du Geld für gerade dieses Hospiz? Dazu habe ich einen sehr persönlichen Bezug, denn meine Mutter durfte hier ihre letzten Wochen verbringen. Als weitere einschneidende Veränderung nach vielen stressigen Wochen begann sie ihren Aufenthalt am 23. Dezember und wir standen vor einem Weihnachtsfest, wie man sich es als Familie so wirklich nicht vorstellen will. Innerhalb kürzester Zeit war für mich aber klar: das passt. Die Anlage ist wunderschön (auch wenn wir den tollen Garten im Winter nur erahnen konnten), die Herzlichkeit unübertroffen – und, so abwegig das klingen mag: Heiligabend war… Scheiße, aber richtig schön.

Why do you raise funds for this particular hospice? There is a very personal connection to it as my mother got to spend her last weeks here. She moved here December 23 after quite a few very stressful weeks and we were headed for a Christmas that no family wants to have to consider. But very soon I realized: it’s a fit. The building is comfy (we were to discover the beauty of the gardens only later), the warmth of the people unsurpassed – and even if that sounds somewhat crazy: Christmas Eve was… crappy but really nice.

Wieso habt ihr euch damals für dieses Hospiz entschieden? Haben wir nicht. Der soziale Dienst im Krankenhaus hat uns nach Abwägung aller möglichen Faktoren diesen Vorschlag gemacht, die Zeit drängte, Plätze sind rar – wir haben darauf vertraut. Was für ein Glück.

Why did you choose this hospice at the time? We didn’t. Social services at the hospital evaluated the overall situation and suggested it, time was of the essence, availability limited – we trusted their judgement. A stroke of luck.

Wer macht bei diesem Fundraiser mit? Alle, die Lust haben. Was mit ein paar Plätzchen in meiner Küche 2011 angefangen hat, ist nun jedes Jahr ein Team von 25-30 Personen, die mit ihren Koch-, Back-, Bastel-, Handarbeits- und anderen -künsten die Sache unterstützen. Und manchmal bin ich nicht sicher, wer mehr Freude daran hat, die Hersteller oder die etwa 80 Käufer für den guten Zweck. Bist du dabei?

Who is part of this fundraiser? Everyone who wants to be. It started with a few Christmas cookies in my kitchen in 2011 and has now grown into a team of about 25-30 contributors who donate their culinary, crafts and other skills. And sometimes I am not sure who has more fun doing it, the contributors or the customers for the good cause. Will you be part of it?
