I had a great night at a beautiful and friendly B&B in Hawes and am still dumbfounded by the 7:1 against Brazil last night. If there hadn’t been constant Facebook comments flying back and forth I would have thought I was hallucinating. Second realization: no muscle ache (okay, it was a flat stage but 20km/13miles are 20km/13 miles nevertheless). But two huge blisters on my heels – literally my Achille’s heels…
Everything was closed already when I arrived in Hawes shortly after 5 pm yesterday, which really was a shame. And this morning everything was STILL closed when I was on my way again. But the weather is good!
And the heels stop bothering me after about 45 minutes. Which is a relief as today is the first of two mountain stages on this tour, up Great Shunner Fell. Nice and flat at the outset but very soon the climb starts. My host in Hawes had informed me: it is a relatively easy but steady climb… and there are four fake summits before you reach the actual one.
The fellow hikers I met yesterday pass me very early on today, when it was still flat. But then they take a wrong turn and suddenly they come up from behind again. That was only a temporary set-up, though 😉
Quite a large part of the way through the moor and heather landscape is on limestone slabs which were put in place so as to keep people from trampling on everything all over the place.
The large slabs sort of wobble on the moor so dry feet aren’t guaranteed. Especially not if you rock back and forth a little to see just how much water might come up…
The view from the summit is marvellous – the weather is simply glorious, though maybe a little windy up here. And the forecast had been rather gloomy… oh well, so much the better.
The descent to Thwaite was neverending even though of course there will plenty of things to observe.
I could spend hours watching the changing hues of green when the clouds pass over the landscape and drown out the sun in certain spots for a short time. It’s better than cinema.
And what ever it is that is not green, it is almost certainly pinkish/purple. Either the thistles, the foxglove, the wild orchids – or soon the heather.
After passing through Thwaite (not without having a stop at their tea room where I met Jen and Jim again) it was for the final part of this stage to Keld. And very soon I was faced with a dilemma. My map showed the Pennine Way forking off to the right, nicely sticking to a contour line, so no ups and downs but the guide said the Herriot Way is off to the left, up a very steep hill – I would guess of about 30%. My weaker self lost this fight and I chose the steep climb… only to find myself faced with this situation only meters from the last gate when I started to laugh hysterically:
I talked to them for a while and introduced myself and my mission 😉 and then successfully attempted to pass them on the left where there was some room… Not one of the mamas moved, only the calves were a bit nervous.
And a bit down the hill on the other side I had this wonderful view which you can only start to imagine on the basis of this picture:
The little village of Keld introduces itself as so many others do: war memorial, bus stop, phone booth. But this particular view somehow reminded me of Long live Ned Devine.
It was another 500m from there to my „luxury yurt“… good night!
