Es war so ein Tag, an dem ich schon nicht aufstehen wollte, was sich dann im Nachhinein „auf der Arbeit“ als weiser Entschluss herausgestellt hat – wenn ich ihn denn gefasst hätte. Ich war dabei, mich auf den Badminton-Platz zu zwingen und nach ein bisschen Surfen auf der Couch gehe ich nun plötzlich auf Wolken. Ich habe gewonnen!

It’s been one of those days… I hadn’t wanted to get up this morning and with hindsight I shouldn’t have after a few bad news I received at the office today. After dinner I was getting ready to force myself onto the badminton court and after a few minutes of browsing the internet I suddenly walk on clouds. I’ve won!

Die gemütlichen Socken waren es, die mich bei der Sparkles Christmas Challenge zum Sieg getragen haben Und nun auf zum Sieg in der Haribohalle, ja!

It was the cozy Christmas entry that won the challenge over at Sparkles Christmas Challenge! And now on to victory on the court, yes!

Auf einmal ist alles wieder im Lot und morgen ist ja auch schon wieder Mittwoch. Freebie nicht vergessen!

Als ich am Donnerstag den Schein der Tippgemeinschaft nach dem 11 Mio Jackpot überprüfen ließ, erschienen auf dem Bildschirm die Worte : „Es liegt kein Gewinn vor.“ Der mürrische Mann in der Annahmestelle hielt mir ungeduldig die Quittung hin und sagte, ohne eine Miene zu verziehen im Ton eines Lagerkommandanten: „Weiter arbeiten!“

Last Thursday I had the numbers of our betting pool checked for the 11m euro jackpot. The screen put it bluntly: „No winnings.“ The grumpy man at the lottery counter impatiently gave me the receipt and then, without batting an eyelid, ordered me: „Back to work!“

Und das habe ich dann auch gemacht und (u.a.) die restlichen Kalendergeschenktüten fertig gemacht.Da greife ich dann mal den Kommentar von Martina auf, dass das doch nach einen Freebie schreit. Okay, okay! Ich gebe zwei Tüten als Freebie raus, eine schmale (6cm tief) und eine breite (10cm tief). Aber es soll nicht so einfach sein. Wer sie gewinnen möchte, muss ein Follower dieses Blogs werden UND einen Kommentar hinterlassen, ob und wenn ja: wie er/sie an Weiberdonnerstag aktiv werden wird.

I obediently followed that order and, among other things, sat down to finish the rest of the calendar gift bags. So let me get back to Martina’s comment that those gift bags spell out blog candy. Swirls and Pearls…

Ich habe allergrößte Schwierigkeiten, Hochzeitskarten zu gestalten. Das geht meistens GAR NICHT. Bei Winter Wonderland ist die Herausforderung diese Woche „Swirls and Pearls“… und da man erst ab Februar Weihnachtskarten einreichen muss, dachte ich, man kann es ja mal versuchen. Motiviert hat mich eine Briefmarke, die den Umschlag eines Briefs aus Japan zierte, den ich kürzlich erhalten habe. (Danke, Yumiko!)

I have the hardest time creating wedding cards. It usually doesn’t work AT ALL. This week’s challenge at Winter Wonderland is „Swirls and Pearls“… and as a Christmas theme is mandatory from February onwards only I thought I’d give it a try. I was motivated by a stamp I recently received on an envelope from Japan. (Thanks, Yumiko!)

Ist die nicht total cool? Womit wir wieder bei der Frage wären, warum viele Briefmarken in Deutschland so altbacken, seriös und langweilig sind. Wie auch immer, Perlen gibt es auch dazu:

Und nun das Objekt in der Gesamtschau… es überzeugt mich nicht 100%ig, hat aber ein Niveau erreicht, dass ich sie auch tatsächlich versenden werde… im Gegensatz zu einigen ihrer Vorgänger.

And now for a look at the whole creation… I’m not 100% positive about it but at least it has reached a level where I will actually send it… which I didn’t do with some of the earlier creations.

Geschenktüten / Gift bags

Für Recycling, besonders von Papier, bin ich ja immer zu haben. Und wenn es dann noch darum geht, dass wunderbare Kalender nicht einfach ins Altpapier gelangen, ist das noch besser. Schon vor Weihnachten hatte ich mich ja an einer Geschenktüte versucht, jetzt habe ich die Herstellung perfektioniert. Und dazu noch die „Anything goes“ Challenge bei UnstampaBelles entdeckt

Recycling is always on my mind, especially when it comes to paper. And if I can put beautiful calendars to good use instead of throwing them in the recycling bin, it’s even better. I had experimented with a first gift bag before Christmas. I am now nearing perfection and have also discovered the „Anything Goes“ Challenge at UnstampaBelles.

Die Maße der Tüte HxBxT sind 26x20x10 cm. Auf dem letzten Blatt des Stoneland Kalenders von 2010 fanden sich auch noch Mini-Abbildungen der einzelnen Monate, so dass sich auch noch ein passender Geschenkanhänger basteln ließ. Und da so ein Kalender gewöhnlich 12 Blatt hat, geht das noch weiter…

The bag measures 26x20x10 cm (height/width/depth). The last sheet of the Stoneland 2010 calendar features miniature pictures of the respective months so it was easy to make matching gift tags. And as a calendar usually has 12 sheets, I will continue…

Kuchen und Wintersport / Cake and winter sports

Man könnte bei diesem Titel denken, dass ich über die Vorteile sportlicher Betätigung nach dem Genuss von Kuchen berichten möchte. Das ist so nicht richtig. Schon allein deswegen, weil hier ja in dieser Saison der Winter noch nicht angekommen ist. Es geht vielmehr um eines der besten Weihnachtsgeschenke. Neben dem Yeti. Oder dem 1m²-Megakalender. Oder den diversen Elch-Ojekten. Oder… Es geht um die Lautsprecher für das Netbook, die mich in die Lage versetzen, allen möglichen hausfraulichen Pflichten nachzukommen, ohne auch nur eine Minute meiner Lieblingsbeschänftigung in den Wintermonaten zu missen.

The title might lead you to think that I’m about to report about the advantages of sports activities after an overindulgence of cake. That isn’t exactly right. Not least because winter hasn’t been here this season. Rather, it’s about one of the best Christmas presents. Aside from the yeti. Or the 1m² mega calendar. Or the respective moose objects. Or… It’s about the speakers for the netbook that enable me to carry out all kinds of domestic tasks while not missing a single minute of winter’s favorite pasttime.

So kam es denn auch, dass ich gestern nochmal gebacken habe – beim Frühstück im Kochbuch der Pioneer Woman geblättert fiel mir auf, dass sich Grandma Iny’s Prune Cake einerseits gut anhört und ich zweitens alle Zutaten im Haus hatte. Nur soviel: es hat sich gelohnt, auch wenn ich das Karamell-Icing etwas länger hätte „werden“ lassen sollen. Die Anrichte ist immer etwas zugemüllt, wenn man zur „Übersetzung“ amerikanischer Rezepte Taschenrechner und Maßband bereithalten muss…

And so it happened that I made a cake yesterday. When I was leafing through the Pioneer Woman’s cookbook over breakfast I not only noticed that Grandma Iny’s Prune Cake sounded very good but also that I had all ingredients at hand. It was well worth it, let’s leave it at that. Even though I should have let the caramell icing sit a little longer. The counter gets even more cluttered when you need to have a calculator and measuring tape ready in order to „translate“ American recipes…

Und wann wird der Tag kommen, an dem ich wieder ernsthaft anfange, Punkte zu zählen? Wann? Sicher morgen…

And when will be the day that I finally get down to calculating points again? When? Surely tomorrow…

(Christmas) Stockings

Zugegeben: es sind vielleicht nicht genau die „Stockings“, um die es in der laufenden Challenge bei Sparkles Christmas Challenge geht, aber wie hätte ich dieser fantastischen Briefmarke widerstehen können, die mich mit der letzten Weihnachtspost erreichte? Briefmarken scheinen ja in 2012 wieder eine größere Rolle in meinem Leben zu spielen… Wie auch immer: es geht also um Stockings, und das ist mein eher unorthodoxer Beitrag dazu!

I admit it: they are probably not exactly the kind of stockings that are supposed to be included at this month’s challenge over at Sparkles Christmas Challenge but how could I have passed on using this awesome stamp that reached me in the Christmas mail? It seems that stamps are playing a more prominent role for me in 2012… Anyhow, it’s about stockings and this is my rather unorthodox contribution!

August am Morgen / August in the morning

Der Baum ist immer noch da, aber heute morgen auf dem Weg zum Bahnhof fand ich den alten August in neuem Style. Wobei ich nicht sicher bin, ob es erste Anzeichen von Karneval sind oder eher ein Pfadfinderoutfit…? Das Licht jedenfalls war unglaublich schön.

The tree is still there but this morning on my way to the train station I found old August sporting a new style. Though I’m not sure whether it’s a sign of carnival approaching or rather a boy scout outfit…? Anyway, the light was wonderful.

Das knackig-kalte-frische Winterwetter ist wohl schon wieder zu Ende, Regen naht, „aber es wird wärmer“ – als wäre das eine gute Nachricht… Die bessere: morgen ist schon Donnerstag!

The crispy-cold-fresh winter weather is apparently nearing its end again already, rain is coming, „but it will be warmer“ – as if that was good news… the better news: tomorrow is already Thursday!

Vorfreude / Anticipation

Wer hätte gedacht, dass ein kurzer Stopp bei der Post in der Mittagspause dazu führen würde, dass mein scheinbar sinnlos dahinplätschernder Tag gerettet würde? Weil ich warten musste. Und dadurch mein Blick auf ein Werbeprospekt fiel. Ein Werbeprospekt für die Briefmarken-Neuerscheinungen 2012. Ich schwebte zurück an meinen Arbeitsplatz…

Who would have thought that a brief stop at the post office during lunch break would make my previously seemingly useless day? Because I had to stand in line. And that due to that my attention was drawn to a leaflet. A leaflet advertising the new stamps of 2012. I was walking on clouds…

Allgemein bin ich ja ein glühender Anhänger von Post – ist IMMER besser als eine Mail. Und ich gucke auch immer nach schönen Briefmarken. Was mir in Deutschland oft schwerfällt, denn viele finde ich sehr langweilig – von Leuten, die 450 Jahre tot sind, und meistens von Männern. Sicher, das ist eine Geschmacksfrage. Wie auch immer. Aber für den Fall, dass euch entgangen sein könnte, worum es hier geht:

I’ve always loved snail mail – and I always will prefer it over e-mail. And I always try to find nice stamps, too. That can be tedious in Germany because I often find them incredibly boring – of people who’ve been dead 450 years, and usually men. Sure, it’s a matter of taste. Anyhow. But just in case you missed the little detail that this is about:

Am 9. Februar wird eine Elchbriefmarke ausgegeben!!!! (Und eine zur Biathlon-WM in Ruhpolding, aber das geht definitiv unter bei diesem „Rivalen“.) Aber dann lese ich, im Kleingedruckten sozusagen, „Wiederbesiedlung durch heimische Wildtiere“. Was? Wo? Elche in Deutschland? Heimisch? Und tatsächlich, bis zum zweiten Weltkrieg waren Elche in Norddeutschland heimisch, und, wie die bekannte Online Enzyklopädie weiter erläutert, wurden in den letzten Jahren über längere Zeiträume in Brandenburg, Thüringen, Hessen und Sachsen-Anhalt gesehen. In Bayern gibt es gar einen „Elchplan“. Sollte ich denn noch einen Umzug in die Gegend des Weißwurstäquators ins Auge fassen müssen?? Wobei ich in Schweden sprachlich sicher besser klar käme…

On February 9 a moose stamp will be released!!!! (And another one showing the Biathlon World Cup in Ruhpolding but that will go under in the excitement about the former.) But then I read the small print so to speak, „repopulating native wild animals“. What? Where? Moose in Germany? Native? And yes, in fact they were native to Northern Germany until WWII. The German entry on the popular online encyclopedia continues to detail that single moose were recently seen over longer periods of time in the states of Brandenburg, Thuringia, Hesse and Saxony-Anhalt. There’s even a „moose plan“ in Bavaria. Should I end up considering a move down South? But then language-wise I’d be much better prepared for Sweden…

Die Rückkehr der Elche / The return of the moose

Gemacht sind sie ja nun schon ein paar Tage, aber es hat ein bisschen gedauert, bis ich mal die Möglichkeit hatte, bei Tageslicht ein Foto davon zu machen. Und die Farben kommen trotzdem nur so la la rüber.

They’ve been sitting here waiting for a few days alreaday but just this weekend I managed to take a picture of them in daylight. And still the colors didn’t come out right.

Auf den ersten Blick könnte man ja meinen, dass es bei dieser January 2012 Challenge bei CCAYR darum geht, einen Elche einzubauen. Aber weit gefehlt. Es geht um nicht traditionelle Farben. Bei mir waren das zum Beispiel diverse Pastellfarben und schwarz. Ein bisschen embossing hätte man auch noch machen können, aber ich darauf habe ich verzichtet.

At first sight you’d think that this January 2012 Challenge at CCAYR is about moose. But no. It’s about non-traditional colors. I chose a few pastels and black for example. Some embossing would have been welcome as well but I decided to pass on it.

Winterstimmung / Winter atmosphere

Geht es nur mir so oder ist es einfach derzeit so gut wie unmöglich, sich morgens aus dem Bett zu schälen? Und dann dieser Nieselregen gestern – da jagt man ja keinen Hund vor die Tür. Aber heute Vormittag muss es passiert sein: es wurde kalt und jetzt rieche ich Schnee. Ja, Schnee liegt in der Luft. Hier am Rhein werden wir wohl keinen zu sehen bekommen, aber ein-, zweihundert Meter höher bestimmt. Es ist soweit. Und die Sonne über dem Poppelsdorfer Schloss musste auch schon wegen des Schilfs fotografiert werden, das ist nämlich nicht mehr lange. Der Poppelsdorfer Weiher wird auf Vordermann gebracht und das Schilf muss weichen.

Is it only me or is it a general fact that it’s next to impossible to get out of bed these days? And then this disgusting drizzle yesterday – you wouldn’t send a dog out in this weather. But it must have happened this morning: temperatures dropped and I can smell snow. Yes, there’s snow in the air. I don’t think we’ll get to see any down by the Rhine here but climb up one or two hundred meters and it will happen. It’s time. I needed to immortalize the sun above Poppelsdorf Palace – or rather the reed in the foreground because that will soon be gone. Poppelsdorf Pond will be rehabilitated and the reed needs to go.
